Our regular movie spot. Easy parking, clean cinema, comfortable movie seat, spacious leg room. Love the Extreme Screen.

(think it's about $11) Their La Premiere seats are awesome too if you have a special occasion to splurge out on.

It's well put together with split levels for ticket buying and cinema-going. While there's tonnes of space in the main foyer, it can be a tight squeeze upstairs waiting to get into your cinema as there'e minimal waiting space. The cinemas themselves having comfy seats and are well-spaced out, the only thing about Events is the lack of Xtreme Screen in comparison to Hoyts. Sizes aside, the cinemas are good quality. There are snack kiosks just outside the cinema doors now so if you'e craving something during the film it saves running downstairs and waiting in line- so handy! What draws me back to Events every single time will be that the food is much cheaper than other joints like Hoyts who don't actually display their prices. That AND they do my favourite choc top with nuts, always so delicious!! I'd recommended Events to family solely for this reason because you get more bang out of your buck with the combos here.

We found the seats comfortable and spacious, which was welcome during a 2 hour plus movie. The theatre itself was clean and tidy too. Although the cinema is upstairs, there is a lift for wheelchair access. I would ring prior to visiting to ensure someone is on hand for assistance.

It had late…read morenight movies on Friday nights and I once saw Auckland icon Killer Ray live here before a showing - probably The Rocker Horror Picture Show or A Clockwork Orange. It closed down for a few years in the 90s and eventually Clip'n'Climb opened amidst fears the old cinema had been ripped out. Thankfully this was not so and the theatre, its foyer and restrooms and have been restored to their former Art Deco period glory. I always especially loved the Powder Room - a good Powder Room is such a girlie pleasure. This is not a 100% faithful restoration as it includes contemporary touches but like its sister The Lido in Epsom, it is beautiful and luxurious with a full bar, lounge-y lobby and gourmet ice cream. The films on show here are usual Indie Festival types and often chosen I think for an older demographic who seem to be in force each time I am here. Make a night of it and get a cheap fast dinner at one of Balmoral's many eateries; the only problem you might run in to is parking so allow time for that before sitting back, relaxing into your huge seat with your goodies and enjoying the show.

It doesn't look much from the outside (my flatmate did in fact wonder what kind of movies were shown there) but walk inside to find a beautiful foyer with chandeliers. A range of snacks are on offer, such as Movenpick ice creams and you can even enjoy a wine with your movie if you so desire. This one cinema wonder certainly delivers on its luxurious surroundings. The plush purple chairs are very comfortable, while the curtain across the screen is a sign of a bygone era. It is a nice change from the cinema mulitplexes that we have become so accustomed to. While the ticket prices haven't gone back to $5, there is still a Tuesday night special (adults $10.50). So make a night of it, perhaps visit a restaurant across the road for some homemade dumplings and then make your way to the cinema for a movie. Thank me later for that great idea.

Monterey is really cinema as it should be. It has a distinctive suburban feel, but not in the run-down way. It's new and tastefully furnished, with a classy café area featuring bevelled mirrors, bookshelves, and lovely vintage crockery. It has several cinemas, each of them with a small number of comfy seats and tiny screens (at least by today's standards). I like best because you never feel like the film is an assault on your senses; I can walk out of the movie and not be dazed by how bright and quiet the real world is.

The decor and interiors are very vintage chic, as are the movie snacks - they offer Phoenix drinks and even roll & dip all their own ice creams by hand! The cinema also doubles as a cafe, with many coming in extra early for their movies to grab nibbles (Try the carrot cake warmed slightly - it's so darn good) and enjoy the coffee. Monterey has five relatively small screens, four of which seat around 45 and the largest screen seating 100. Each seat is large and luxurious, with even the front row placed back far enough to ensure nobody has to crook their neck in order to see properly. The feeling is boutique, but the prices are incredibly reasonable. You can get tickets for around $10 depending on the night or time of day. There's plenty of special events and perks for club members. Furthermore, the selections of movies are fantastic - with a great mix of big budget and indie fare. Overall, It's a very enjoyable place to view a movie, one which I highly recommend even if you're not a local.

The staff don't mind if you just wander in and have a look around and the foyer alone has enough to amuse the kiddies for at least half an hour, probably longer. During the school holidays they run all kinds of fun stuff and if you haven't been before, it's unlike anything else you can do around the town. You absolutely have to be organised and book in advance and maybe the movie is a bit dated, but it's fascinating and presented in a way that makes astronomy accessible to everyone - even 3 year olds. There's an arty crafty session where the kids get to make their own (artistically questionable) souvenir but the highlight is that the film is shown Cinema 180 style on the ceiling. A bit hard on the neck but SO worth it. You can hire the Stardome for functions but when I looked into booking it for an event, I ran in to the problem of how to keep kids from playing unsupervised in the lobby so that's something to consider. I'm ashamed to say I have never been here in the evening and actually looked through that giant telescope at the night sky. I intend to do it every Winter but late nights out in Winter just don't seem to happen. This is the year.
