I spent a whole week trying to get in touch with a live person from the Social Security agency via…read morephone by dialing the general 800 number with no success. But when I finally found the number for the local Jersey city office and called them they were surprisingly helpful unlike many other government agencies. I scheduled an appointment and showed up 15 minutes earlier. There was a line outside and it was 30 degrees that morning so waiting 15 minutes felt like an eternity. Once I got in I got a number and waited around 20 mins until they called me. I was able to get my issue resolved but they should definitely do something about the line outside. I felt bad for all the elderly. Also, they should list the local office number on their website and not a number through which it's impossible to get in touch with a human being.

With any government office, you always go in expecting the worst. I had made an appointment online,…read morewhich is what I was told to do. I got there 15 minutes early and checked in. I still waited for over an hour, and my number was never called. They ended up taking everyone who needed a name change and lined us up in a separate line where we were all jumbled up. It didn't matter if we had an appointment or what our number was. I waited on that line for an additional 20 minutes. When I finally did get to somebody, that process took less than 90 seconds. I really wish these government offices could figure out a way to organize their walk-ins better so that their appointments don't suffer as a result.

The clerk at the desk who takes the dispute submissions (and ticket payments) wasn't very nice or welcoming. So I had my worries. Afterwards I also didn't receive my confirmation via email as she promised until I submitted a secondary email request. So expect a poor experience in that particular office. The saving grace was when I came on my court date. The security guard at the entrance was very nice and welcoming. He greeted me with a "Hello my brother," and politely went through the screening process. This positivity continued with the court guards who openly and pleasantly answered anyone's questions. Then what put it over the top was the pleasant and respectful way that Judge Irwin Rosen treated the defendants. He was in no way intimidating or skewed to be on the side of the parking officers. He was impartial and fairly evaluated every case based on the defendants' testimony and evidence. He clearly wasn't "out to stick people with as many tickets as possible" like the meter maids are. I presented my case, showed my evidence of pictures of the street signs (they MUST BE PRINTED) and showed that the ticket was not issued in accordance with the municipal code (research the violation code to help your case). He fairly weighed the testimony and evidence then judged in my favor and dismissed the ticket. My court time was at 1pm and I was out by 1:40pm. I couldn't ask for a better turnout. The court security and Judge Rosen are excellent. Keep up the great work!

Lots nearby are $7-12 a day. Entry is a simple x-ray screening for bags and a metal detector. You wait downstairs in the entry area if they aren't ready yet. Six courtrooms and relatively swift processing. The place is neat and clean, even if the neighborhood doesn't feel it at times. You can go to pay your tickets here, too.

I just served recently and I think most of the reviews here are spot on…read more The good is that there's free WIFI and it works well. They also have books and magazines if your batteries die or you don't have a device with you. The staff try to make it as painless as possible. The bad is there' s no parking, so you are probably looking at an Uber/cab ride that eats up the five dollars you will earn for the day and then some. Also, the neighborhood, while not awful, isn't the greatest and doesn't have many good lunch options and isn't the greatest to just walk around and kill time during lunch break. There's a deli/convenience store called Harry's (IIRC) that isnt' bad for sandwiches and has stools to sit by the window. That's about it, though. I was fortunate in that the settled or somehow disposed of the 16 cases they had on the docket, except for one where they needed jurors and I was not called. Larger picture: Yes, I appreciate that it is "Civic duty" and it really is important, but every three years? That strikes me as a little harsh for a sizeable state like N.J. Don't take it out on the court clerk staff, though. It's a matter for the legislature to take up. Speaking of which, Its' time to write my state senator.... On the whole, it was about as painless as Jury duty can be.

The Hudson County Courthouse in Jersey City may have seen better days in the early years of the…read moretwentieth century when it was city hall, county seat and hall of justice, but as an example of beaux artes architecture for public use in modern day New Jersey it is almost without peer. Renovated in the 70s, it remains a beautiful museum quality structure, still used in part by the Superior Court and it's Appellate Division. While we waited for oral arguments to begin, we stood in the third floor hallway outside the courtroom and had perfect views of the domed and muraled ceiling as well as the smaller historic paintings on the high arching walls. Marble from Maine on stairways, floors and balastrades; and polished brass light fixtures casting their glow adding to the ambiance, it was easy to slide back in time to when civic pride built such monuments to honor the achievements of that Golden Age. After such enjoyment the quality of our legal arguments almost seemed secondary to our reason for being here, yet the day went well for us. The three judge panel appeared attentive to the facts and logic of our cause, and asked the right questions to clarify our position, while also letting us know where we went astray. All in all, a fine, if unexpectedly wonderful day.

I called the main SSA number, and was offered several appointments within the next month at various local offices. A 9am in Hoboken was the first available. Always a good idea to get the first appointment if possible, in order to limit wait time. I was seen within about 10 minutes by Ms. Acosta. She was fantastic! Super nice and very helpful. She gathered the information she needed from me, then guided me through filling out the forms. When I made a mistake on one form, she was very patient with me and got me on the right track. Mission was accomplished, and Ms. Acosta made it as pleasant as could be. When I let Ms. Acosta's supervisor know how terrific she was, they both seemed very happy to hear the service was great.

It took me almost all day to take care of everything I needed to take care that day. Today (3/16/26) I tried calling the office and I was on hold for a long time and the called dropped so I called again and stayed on hold until thank God someone came to the phone line and helped me. The agent spoke with me patiently and provided the information that I needed. Couldn't resolve anything at that moment but will wait 3 days to check if my direct deposited went through. Not easy to be without a monthly income. Thanks Hoboken Social Secuirty Office. But before I go, I do want to tell you that there is a guard in this office that was very unfriendly and I didn't like that.

It's somehow been to the same two incorrect locations twice now and doesn't seem to be coming any time soon. If you are looking for a grossly understaffed USPS, then you will strike gold here…read more Typically, they have 1 rep working at the front desks helping customers. On a good day, they may have 2. And on a great day, they may have 3, but one will only help with mail pickups and refuse to assist otherwise. And even when they are fully staffed, you can STILL expect long waits! Unless you arrive during off-peak times, lines are typically long, with about 5+ people and waits of 20+ minutes or better for service. The Indian female rep is normally mean to people and combative. The one with a heavy Caribbean/African accent is nice but works very slowly and tends to make mistakes - like adding on unnecessary costs. Each seems to be generally poorly trained. Among the entire staff, Lisa is the best - she should be running this office. She earned 1 extra star for this rating. Whoever the postmaster is simply doesn't care about this office's operations. He/she doesn't properly staff for peak times, come out to support the team when they are struggling, ensure labels stocked on the floor, or even keep displays presentable. It never ceases to amaze me how supervisors keep their jobs when lower level team members are the ones holding the business together. Lastly, they have a non-standard policy where they won't accept or scan in prelabeled packages. Even if you wait for a rep to be available, the rep will refuse to scan your prelabeled package and directed me to leave it at the counter in a bin: This is borderline fraudulent because all other post offices will scan your package since it's their JOB. I once dropped off a prelabeled package with a gift, they refused to scan it, and it mysteriously disappeared without a trace; my lost package was never resolved because it was never scanned at any point to be traceable! Overall, it's a barely mediocre office - I've seen worse (e.g., the MLK post office), but you should have low expectations here. If you can make the trip, go to the USPS office in Newport, and you will be amazed to see how a good post office is run.
