I guess the police/rescue squad get about 5-10 calls every spring-early fall to get some idiot that overestimated their free climbing prowess, got in a hairy spot, and (best case) froze and needed help back down. Worst case they fall, get injured and need to be carried out. Back in the day when I was still a young woman I did enjoy hiking in with some friends and finding a quiet spot near the falls to enjoy the natural vibes with the help of some good quality bud. , Haven't been up to the falls in years but I imagine not much has changed. Note/another reviewer questioned why the city doesn't keep it up better as it is a nice spot. I think the land is privately owned not city property.

Though this won't present much of of a challenge to someone looking for a serious hike, and the trails could be cleaner and better marked (at one point we ended up accidentally wandering off the path and into a litter-filled clearing), this is mostly just a delightful mini nature escape that more locals should definitely know about.

But "Tidal Estuary Park" doesn't really roll off the tongue. It's lovely to have this piece of land along the waterfront in Troy dedicated for public use. Sometimes it's a farmers market. Sometimes it's the grounds for a festival. But I like to walk along the river after a dinner in the Collar City, just to enjoy the view. The park would be nicer if there was more shade, and maybe a little less concrete. And then there's the issue of the big gaping hole where City Hall used to be. But even that crumbling infrastructure is part of the charm. It is. Of course, Troy is on an upswing, and development will one day fill in that hole. Maybe with a movie theater. Maybe with something else. We'll have to wait and see. I'm just glad that I don't have to be the one to make those decisions.

This is a fantastic park, and really is a shining example of how Troy has tried to revitalize…read moreitself in the past decade or so. My wife and I have been here for festivals and it really is a great venue for that. The stone wall is a perfect place for sitting on and watching the boats, or face the other way behind the stage during a concert and see how bands really are during a song. We have come here on the weekends with a blanket just to watch the fountain and do a cross word puzzle or eat take-out food. Parking is convenient, and it is nearby to a lot of walkable places for food, books, or other diversions.

Just driving around, we could see lots of things falling apart (like the pool... enough said) or worn down. Their water splash area was large but only consisted of one pipe shooting water up. They had several large pavilions which families were using to celebrate, but I couldn't see many other areas to relax. The overlook spot was fun, though not very large. I think the clincher was the pot smokers who were very close to the slide where my son was playing. He doesn't need that. Those who love this place can keep it. With lots of other great parks in the capital district, I don't need to come back here.

And from what I have seen on Google, I am not the first to deal with this jack off. Decided to play 9 holes last minute and we got a walk on tee time. Cool..... Mind you, I had not played this course in at least a decade. And I probably only did so once or twice. So any memory of how uneven nearly every fairway is had escaped me. Because of this lack of familiarity with the course, it did take a bit extra to figure out where to aim, what club to hit, etc. That being said, while the fairways may be uneven, both those and the greens were in good shape. Probably in better shape than many other local, municipal courses. But it is a bit unnerving to have to share such nice, if not canted fairways with a bunch of people out walking the cart paths for "exercise". However, our experience was totally soured at the very end of the round. Along with the lapse in memory with the sloping fairways, I also forgot that the front 9 finishes out in the middle of the course. With nobody in front of us, and having finally gained some distance between ourselves and a solo walker (who seemed hell bent on setting a land speed record) we thought we would play 10 and then make a left turn back to the parking lot. I literally stepped up on the 10th tee when the starter came out of nowhere and made a snide remark about playing a couple extra holes. It wasn't the fact that yes, we only paid for 9 and got nabbed trying squeeze an extra hole in. But it was the tone and manner in which we were ambushed by him. Perhaps the single sprinter had called in to complain because he felt "held up" (we literally made him wait maybe a total of 5 or at most 10 minutes total over the course of 9 holes) and that is why he showed up? I don't know. But if they had a problem, it would have been nice to know before we finished the 9th hole. For the 9 hole price with a cart, it's not worth putting up with attitude. Were we trying to play 18 for the price of 9? Hell no. But it just seemed like no big deal to take a couple extra swings on the way in from the middle of the course after finishing the first nine. Perhaps if the course was rerouted (Not sure if that is possible) they wouldn't need Judge Smails to ride around and treat people like Al Czervik.

He very sternly and disrespectfully told me to get off the pathway " we have golfers coming through ". Then after they passed i started walking back to my home and he accosted me a second time. Something like " i was nice before but get off the course its not for walking ". This guy had no right to kick me off this trail and no golfers were around. Also the sign says enter at your own risk and doesn't say members only public keep out which is what this bully was implying.

At the time, I would bring my text books and read them here while feeding the squirrels that would sit on the nearby posts. Active train tracks run by the park, so I would also see trains go by now and again. A baseball diamond was occasionally used for Little League games providing additional distractions from my studies. Since then, I have brought my wife here and just recently my son. We had had picnics here, walked with our dogs here, enjoyed food truck festivals here, and I still on occasion just drop by to get some peace and quiet. They had pavilions (which I assume you rent from the Village), picnic tables, a gazebo, basketball courts, a playground for kids, and lots and lots of green grass. Wonderful!

This is a pretty nice dog park. It is located with a whole park complex that includes several paved…read morewalking trails, a pool area, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, and fields. We have only explored the dog park area, which consists of two fenced in areas (one for "large" dogs, the other for "small" dogs) to run around in. A gazebo which provides some shelter from the sun is located in between both of the areas, and the fence runs through it. Like all dog parks, as the season wears on the grass slowly gets worn away and the gazebo gets dirtier. The cleanliness of the grass itself is entirely on the responsibility of the dog owners to pick up after their pets. I haven't had too much trouble here in that regard. Water is available for the dogs to drink, but bring a bowl (though some are usually here).

Colonie sometimes gets a bad rap…read more Perhaps because the most obvious symbol of the town is Wolf Road where it seems like all the national chain restaurants open shop to the detriment of our regional culture. Traffic gets snarled up on this arterial too, which makes it a place that some people avoid like the plague. But some of my favorite things in the region are in Colonie. Yes, there's Trader Joe's, which I am still ever thankful decided to open up an outpost in Albany. But Parivar on Central Avenue with its back-of-store kitchen is an amazing place to get delicious Indian street-food served without pretense while catching up on a bit of Bollywood and picking up some dried lentils and spice blends for home cooking projects. And it's not just the exotic ethnic places in Colonie either. Because this town is the home of Ralph's Tavern which has been feeding families wings, pizza, and mozzarella with melba for generations. In the summer there is Scoups ice cream, which is just about adjacent to The Crossings. The latter is probably the single best outdoor playground for young kids in the area, even though I wish it had more shade. And during the growing season, The Crossings plays host to a farmers market. For a suburb of Albany, this town has a lot going on.

Troy's Uncle Sam [Troy NY]…read more Keep your eyes open or you might miss this shiny silver statue of the Uncle Sam Monument who stands facing River Street. The statue identifies him as "Uncle Sam Wilson." The inscription on the statue says that he was born in Arlington MA. He was a New York meatpacker who supplied barrels of beef to the U.S. Army (who were preparing to go to war with Canada) during the war of 1812. Rations of meat were uncommon back then and when asked who supplied it "Uncle Sam" was mentioned. The barrels were stamped "U.S." and since then the kindness of Uncle Sam and United States were associated. He is buried in Troy NY at Oakwood Cemetery. Other inscriptions on the monument says: Troy's Citizen - America's Uncle The big thing is not what happens to us in life But what we do about what happens to us.
