The new management of Hudson Wine Merchants is not community-minded like its founders. Example: They made their staff whine before the SLA to oppose a liquor license for a new shop which would have been located miles and miles outside of Hudson--claiming that it would cause too much competition for them. Absolutely ridiculous: HWM is a high-end niche business based on Warren Street's fancy clientele. A liquor store across from a gas station two towns away, selling Wild Turkey and Popov, was no threat to HWM. I was a regular when Michael and Marianne owned HWM, but I'll never spend another penny thete because of this petty behavior against a great Livingston family. read more

Classy and spendy wine, we felt a bit underdressed asking if they had anything in the $10 to $12 range. Prices here are clearly marked at the $30 and up. There's more expensive than that, too. The gent who was here was still polite and absolutely not condescending and still very helpful to find something in our cheap plonk range. Went upstate and found this cute wine shop. We asked the young lady who was actually super nice and cheerful about any good local wines that's worth taking home she recommended the 2019 Hudson Chatham. We tried it and it was in agreement the worst wine we have ever tasted. It's sharp, water-down taste and sour. Did she sell this to clear stock or she really think this is delicious? Urgh! read more

Absolutely adore this shop. I've visited Hudson a few times and each time I stop in there's a happy and helpful staffer who greets me and proceeds to make wonderful recommendations on whatever it is I'm looking for. Their selection and prices are excellent and, as a bonus, they have a free tracking system for customers so they/you can look back at your wine purchases and remember what it was you liked and didn't like. I only wish I lived in Hudson so I could frequent this place more often! read more

This is the best wine store around. Michael the store owner is incredibly knowledgable, helpful, and will help you pick out the perfect wine without up selling you. This place is by far the best Wine Shop I have ever been to.. Michael, the owner, is the most passionate and knowledgeable person I have come across.. The guy is an encyclopedia.. I first met Michael in this little town of Hudson two or three years ago.. I walked into the wine store and asked him to help me discover white wines.. He was able to describe to me the different varietals, the differences between regions, producers, years, and terrior.. The guy knows everything.. He has wines that will cost you 10 bucks up to whatever you are looking for.. I live in Manhattan and take advantage of his free delivery to NYC on certain days of the week.. Not because he has wines that no one else has, though he does, its because even pairs wines for my dinner parties.. I am a professional cook and when I had my restaurant, he did my wine pairings at my place.. Not to mention he does several of the wine programs for restaurants around NYC. I know this reads like some informercial but, I am not related to this guy, He is really the best at his job and he deserves the props.. Friendly service and I was recommended a great bottle of wine. I remember it fondly and it was months ago.

I was recently in town visiting a friend and having lunch, and as I needed quality booze for an upcoming event, I decided to stop by Hudson Wine Merchants to kill two birds with one stone. What a great decision! I have purchased the odd bottle of wine here in the past, but although I frequent Hudson for business and seeing friends, I live near a great family owned wine shop in Niskayuna, which is my usual spot. I must say that I have made a formal decision to buy specialty libations here from now on, regardless of distance. I think the woman I spoke to was the owner, and I let her know that I wanted to have a tasting of different bubblies for this event. I also let her know that I wanted some unique bottles because we would also be comparing with the usual suspects, and pairing them all with food. She was right on the money with every suggestion--some cava, some Portuguese sparkling, some small batch unfiltered bubbles, all dry and no sweet slag. Every bottle was interesting in its own right and I would buy every one of them again. The owner was friendly and unpretentious, especially for a wine person. We kept each bottle under $30, which was amazing. I've never seen such an eclectic yet affordable collection of wines as in this shop. To top it off, the other staff was lovely and after paying my bill, the cashier carried the lot out to my car. Bravo, Hudson Wine Merchants, excellent work--you have a friend for life! read more

I am new to wine and so far love presecco and most reds. One of the sales girls recommended a Cava and a sparkling red. The Cava was not bad but I prefer presecco. Now the red....was amazing. Salesperson (may be the owner) recommended a sparkling wine, and it was disgusting. Didn't realized that it was actually RED until we got home. Of course he didn't even mention that its RED at the store. Honestly, no self-respecting wine owner would ever recommend a sparkling RED wine to anyone! So, tourist beware... Pick your own stuff here if you do decide on getting anything. Otherwise they'd sell you stuff they can't get rid of. Wow. Spent an incredible day in Hudson with my mother and stopped in here between strolling the streets window shopping and dinner at Daba. Came in on the recommendation of Shauna Lee up the street. I have never seen such a selection of fun, obscure wines and varieties to date. I live in NYC and have yet to discover such enthusiastic, helpful people. I have looked high and low for a particular sparkling spanish white we purchased here and cannot find it. Also, the Australian Vermentino was excellent. Prices are incredibly reasonable. I will be taking advantage of their free delivery to NYC on certain days of the week and hope to be back in the store soon. What a lovely shop indeed! read more

We love Michael and Hudson Wine Merchants. We live in Tivoli which is about 30 minutes south of Hudson, NY and I can tell you it's worth a drive. Michael knows a lot about wine and shares his expertise in a friendly, down to earth way. They've got a good inventory, but the real magic is Michael's ability to help you find a great bottle of wine. I've never been to a better wine shop anywhere. While in Hudson for a wedding I was searching for a nice wine to enjoy at our B&B. Yelp comes through big time. The store was orderly and good size. The proprietor was warm and greeted me as I entered. He asked what I was looking for and made several suggestions. He was knowledgable and accommodating. He rang me up and I asked him where I should go for some cheese and meats to pair with my wine. He suggested a shoppe right up the street "Olde Hudson" shoppe which turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. Great service and a great selection of wines. read more

I did not actually purchase anything at this store, that's why my five star review is especially noteworthy. Last fall, my husband and I were crossing the street in front of Hudson Wine Merchants when I slipped (NOT their fault, it was my shoes) and we thought my ankle was broken. (Turned out to be a wicked sprain.) I found refuge at the bench in front of Hudson Wine Merchants. Not only did the kind girl working that night provide my husband ice from her own lunch box, she gave us plastic bags from the store to put it in. Due to her kindness, I was able to ice, wrap, and elevate my ankle while my husband retrieved our car. I've no doubt her quick response to help hastened my recovery and salvaged our weekend. I should add, she did all of this while continuing to help her paying customers. I will always support a business with such customer service and applaud the management that encourages it.
