I recently left the book The Help behind in Fortuna,CA The book is an engaging book in which I could not put down ( yes I am aware of the controversies in the books I read such as trying a new restaurant in order to review it) :-) I was determined to read an online version of the book and thankfully I ran into their virtual county library website. We've return to this library thanks to Shoshanna in the Children's library. We hear so many good things about her in our community. She is a light of sunshine, kind, creative, supportive, and very helpful. Her optimism and positivity is priceless. Our County of Humboldt is lucky to have her. The children's area has opened ended play and nature inspired stations friendly for young children. We love the new playground however I wish there was a way to close the gate because it is open to the street and people drive fast through that curved corner. In addition, there are sometimes men sitting at the table but they don't have any children with them. Sometimes this makes me feel uncomfortable as a mom with young kiddos. read more

Everyone I talked to at the library from getting a new card to finding were the book I wanted was located was extremely nice and helpful!!!

Submitted a request for an item via inter-library loan over two weeks ago. There is no record of my request anywhere to be seen in my account information, and no communication from the library staff as to the status of my request, or even if they have received it. This is unacceptably bad quality customer service, but about what I have come to expect from the institutions and employees of Humboldt County, the best aspect of which is the road out. read more

A huge relatively modern building, with a great view of the bay and water. There are several areas around the outside for children to play and people to sit relax and enjoy the day. Also has a huge parking lot with plenty of room to park. There seems to always be a fair amount of transient and homeless hanging around outside and in the shadows of the foliage around the perimeter. Be aware of what and who is around you when you are outside. Parental supervision is recommended for small children, both inside and out. The staff that I have encountered on my couple of visits have all been kind and friendly and can usually point you in the right direction for what you're looking for. There are several good sections - a great children's section as well as a very nice reference research section for looking up hard to find information. This library is closed on Mondays and seems to run really short hours on the days it is open. A couple times I have stopped to look for reading materials and it was closed? A pretty nice facility for what it is - better than some not as good as others. 3.5 Stars - rounded up for local support. 00284 read more

I belong to a book club at the library and enjoy the periodical area and the opportunity to use the facilities in a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. Staff is friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. read more

Nice facility, it's pretty clean considering there are a lot of transits hanging around. There is a wide variety of books for kids to adults. They have computers to use, but only for 30 minuets a day which is the only bad part I feel. read more

Large library. Great kids section. They have outdoor play area in front of building. Wifi doesn't work in kids section. Bathrooms for ladies was clean. Friendly and helpful staff. Lots of information on community activities. read more

Just about the nicest library I have ever been to in my life. And I have been to a lot! Great selection, pretty quiet, great views out the window. Just a really nice place to sit even if you aren't reading anything. read more

Great place to bring my kid. Just have to keep him close till we get to the kids section. I would not use the mens room...homeless basically shower and do drugs in there...hold him tight as you walk past the computer/internet use section...as it is full of vagrants posting comments on Lost Coast Outpost. Once you turn the corner...and get past the creepies reading in the periodical section...you are almost home free....yup, the kids section. Great selection, super friendly environment...and a nice view to boot. If you don't have any kids, and love history, the redwood room upstairs is awesome, just strong arm your way through the homeless layer and prostitutes out front....and enjoy some Humboldt history upstairs! Oh...also...most of the time you go there, they will be closed. This jewel of a public resource is probably open about 20 hours a week. The design is pretty cool and they have some really older titles that are nice to be in a catalog. But, sheesh, the place is chock-full of homeless people; and they don't have a whole lot in the way of new releases. As for DVDs, I doubt they even have 20. read more
