This is a beautiful modern pier nestled in the relatively calm waters of Trinidad. The "new pier"…read morereplaced the "old pier" several years ago, but the primary purpose remains the same: supporting commercial fishing and crabbing operations seasonally. The last hundred feet or so of the pier is designated only for commercial fishing operators, but the rest of this private pier is open to the public. The environment surrounding this pier is breathtaking, with huge headlands towering above either side of the pier, and a gorgeous view of the rocky coastline down towards Humboldt Bay. I visited this pier twice during Thanksgiving week, fishing and crabbing in the evening with my boys. We caught a few small rockfish and white croaker, and several small crabs that were well below the size limit. Can't wait to come back here.

I've been homeless so it doesn't bother me aside empathy Thank you eureka police for being respectful and empathetic to people and not robbing shooting and beating people on a regular basis people here complain about the police far too much. I blame that on addicts and hippies and some old anti police attitude mess. I used to sell drugs in other states. City of Eureka as a visitor [Eureka CA]…read more We saw and did a lot more in the City of Eureka this time around when we revisited during the extended Memorial Day weekend 2025. Each below have their own a separate review. New to us: * Sequoia Park & Garden - the garden featured a wishing well and a gazebo. Lots of flowers in bloom which is generally between May and September. * Sequoia Park Zoo and The Redwood Sky Walk - The Sky Walk is accessible only through the Sequoia Park Zoo. Enjoyed both attractions! The suspension bridge was my highlight but I also really liked seeing the flamingos! * Fort Humboldt State Historic Park - cool history where future U.S. President, Ulysses S. Grant, served as a Captain and commander of all Union forces during the Civil War. This place is said to be haunted. * T.J. Maxx - just passing time before movies. As we were about to leave town to head back home we stopped by downtown on Memorial Day. Many businesses were open including: * Old Town Square - historic charm and for the most part I didn't see too many homeless people on the streets as many have mentioned in their reviews. We came around 10:00a. * Dick Taylor Craft Chocolate - located right on the waterfront of Humboldt Bay. Sampled some artisanal chocolates and enjoyed a Browned Butter Rice Krispy Treat from their cafe bar. * Los Bagels - tried their Scrambagel for the first time. Very good in organic sesame seed bagel. This is a cafe with Mexican and Jewish influence. Revisited: * The Donut Mill - Ham & Cheese Croissant for breakfast * Broadway Cinema - "The Last Rodeo" [an Angel Studios production] * Brick and Fire Bistro - featured in DD&D twice... first one in and we got to sit inside the main dining room this time. Had the Kobe Fettina Steak again. We've pretty much explored all we wanted to see in the City of Eureka so won't be back in a long while. We'll probably revisit again in a few years. Captain Buhne was a very wealthy man credited to be the first captain to pilot settlers across the Humboldt Bay. He was also was a business merchant/dairyman/tugboat captain/ railroad & timber investor and Vice President of local bank. Captain Buhne hired the architect firm of "Kenitzer & Raun" to design his building. The architectural design style was called "Italianate Renaissance Revival" which was a popular style at this time "Victorian Era". During the late 1800's the building was home to a number of business, some being (Humboldt County Bank/US. Land Offices.) Today the first floor is occupied with boutiques and restaurant. The second and third floor remain offices and apartments. The craftsmanship of the interior as well as the exterior are stunning ! I love all the detailed workmanship of this period ! Overall, I have not gone in person post COVID to check out any books or media so this review is based on post COVID times especially in our digital age.

We've return to this library thanks to Shoshanna in the Children's library. We hear so many good…read morethings about her in our community. She is a light of sunshine, kind, creative, supportive, and very helpful. Her optimism and positivity is priceless. Our County of Humboldt is lucky to have her. The children's area has opened ended play and nature inspired stations friendly for young children. We love the new playground however I wish there was a way to close the gate because it is open to the street and people drive fast through that curved corner. In addition, there are sometimes men sitting at the table but they don't have any children with them. Sometimes this makes me feel uncomfortable as a mom with young kiddos.

We had just had brunch at the Cafe Brio and decided they would try doing their drawing in the Arcata Library. The librarians there were the most rude individuals we have encountered in our travels. I feel sorry for the city of Arcata to have these individuals representing their city. Needless to say we won't be returning, and it definitely left us feeling unwelcome in this city.

It…read morewas interesting to know that quite a bit of their area of operation deals with the rugged mountains to the east besides the "Lost Coast" and coastline north of them. They do alot of the SAR/Law Enforcement duties that in other larger cities they have air-ops from police or fire that would handle it. Surprisingly quite a few of their "calls" are for evacs for car accidents in the mountains. Beside SAR along the coast they also help local law enforcement with locating illegal crops in the mountains. They are very friendly there and willing to share there job experiences, duties and equipment. Knowing some of the Coasties in Los Angeles I could see their similarities and differences in what they deal with, weather being a big one. Also Eureka is a "Coast Guard City", one of a handful in the US they whole heartily supports the Coasties.
