At lunchtime the ashram accepts visitors who wish to partake of the vegan food on offer. A few years ago, the food here was !00% living, but it is now not 100%. Elahn, the founder of the ashram, has explained to me that being 100% raw did not suit him. But they still partake of a high percentage of living foods. Eating raw can sound like a horrible ordeal to some. However, you may be delighted with the level of quality and flavour and goodness to be had from this food here. A £7 contribution is asked for and this entitles you to share the food which is buffet style. You will need to ring before 12 noon to book yourself a place. (Tel. 01458 832 300). The ashram is 5-10mins walk from the high street. I love the food on the high street, but nothing can match this level of nutrition.

There were two waitresses that quickly brought over some water and took our orders. I ordered the chicken breast and my mum got the veggie pie. I contemplated ordering the potato skins but they had run out giving the last order to the table next to me. The food took quite a long wait before it came out but once we got it I will say that it was very good. Great taste and presented well. I heard them telling a neighboring table that they had run out of another dish, was only around 8pm and they are open quite late. Finished dinner and was ready to order an apple pie with custurd, but alas, they didnt have custard in stock either. So I said no dessert then. I sat at the table for about 15 minutes until asking if I had to go pay somewhere as the waitress hadnt brought the check. She said no she will bring it over. I see her roaming around for 10 more minutes and still no check. My cash was on the table the entire time. Finally the other waitress brought it over. The Canuck and the Vegan seem to be both catered to by a peer at the menu - so appropriate breakfasts are ordered along with a cup of tea and freshly squeezed orange juice (no box stuff here). The meals take a bit of time to arrive. We were warned ahead when we ordered and had armed ourselves with an assortment of Saturday papers from the shop next door. The breakfasts arrive about fifteen minutes into the Guardian and it is well worth the wait. Two bacon and sausages, eggs, beans, tomatoes and toast with the non-meaty equivalents on the Vegans plate. I had taken a chance on a motorway services breakfast on the way down to Southern England and had suffered for the rest of the day. It sat inside of me like a cinder block for 300 miles and made the day worse. Heaphy's re-affirmed my faith in the Great British Breakfast. The sausages were small but excellent and the bacon of excellent quality. I should have ordered more toast, it was one of those breakfasts where it seems to leave anything on the plate, including the yolks from the eggs. If you find yourself near here in need of a meal, this place satisfies.
