If you're looking for a good pub, it doesn't get much better than this…read more Lovingly called simply "The Axe" by locals, this pub is in a different league to most other rural pubs. I'll explain why and try to be concise. The cuisine is exceptional. There's a good selection of quality drinks. The service is excellent. The atmosphere is always friendly and welcoming -- the sort of place where complete strangers tend to strike-up conversation. The location is perfect, overlooking the Village Green, with a big beer garden behind, and a vast playing field behind that. It's a lovely village, nestled in the gently-undulating farming landscape of rural north-east Herts -- no wonder Braughing was recently awarded the prestigious "Village of the Year" accolade. The pub's menu always includes the best of local produce, from locally-reared beef to local pork sausages, alongside popular country pub dishes. (Braughing village is famous for, among other things, the delicious local sausages, and this is a good place to sample them.) Did I mention the pies? A different pie every day it seems, and you won't find better pies than these. I don't make a statement like that lightly.

George and staff quite honestly are awesome. The right people help make any establishment, but this place has three other points that put this great little spot on the map. BEER I'm always impressed by a place that takes its' beer seriously, and the Wooden Walls does not disappoint, even within walls so close together. They have several awesome cask ales on tap as well as authentic Guinness, Peroni, and a host of others - each available in the perfect glassware for the pour. GREAT FOOD The food here really is wonderful. Traditional fare such as fish and chips and Yorkshire pudding are perfect. Additionally though, there are a host of other more adventurous pairings that are equally exquisite. Crab cakes are great, the jenga fries are creative and delicious. You really can't go wrong. ATMOSPHERE This place has a wonderful, quaint atmosphere about it. It's small, intimate setting is a great blend of modern accents on old world charm. Fresh and clean setting. This place is just a short hop off of the M1, and totally worth it.

What can I say about the King's Arms? I'm at home here. When we moved to the UK, honestly our most…read moredesired feature was walking distance to a pub. We got stumbling distance to one of the best pubs in the country. This place is well-regarded by everyone in the region. I've met people here who give up walking distance to their local to drive here and have a good time. That says something. My first night here I made friends, and each time I've been here since I find myself in good company either with neighbors we've met before, or people who know we're new to the area and want to welcome us. I can't begin to tell you how often a quick pint before dinner turns into a long session at King's Arms. I wouldn't have it any other way. These guys truly embrace the concept of being the center of village activity. No TVs, no WiFi, these things distract from the community. You come here to interact with your friends and neighbors, enjoy a good beer, and enjoy living in the company of others. They regularly have events to bring the village out. The most impressive of which was the dinner they hosted on the night of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. They served the exact 10-course menu served in first class that evening, and requested everyone bust out their tuxedos and dresses to mark the occasion in grand fashion. It was a remarkable evening. One disappointment, since I have to list one to feel as though I am being fair, is the wine list. We love the temperanillo, but really none of the others. But we're not here to drink wine, we're here to be social! It makes me a little sad that we don't have this type of drinking culture in the US. If you're not an alcoholic, you're not likely be on a first-name basis with the bartenders at a local watering hole. That's why I love walking in here; everyone knows everyone else, they're always happy to see you, they know what you drink, they pour a tasty pint, and are genuinely good people. I dig it.

We had a wonderful meal in the restaurant then back to the bar for a couple more drinks and more chat with the friendly locals. It turns out they even offer a free lift home service for evening diners which could come in very handy indeed. They also do all sorts of other specials such as steak nights and meal deals along with a beer festival and even a sponsered bungy jump! All in all a pleasant proper country pub with excellent food and drinks and a great atmosphere.

Really friendly bar/restaurant staff that greeted me like a long-lost friend. Plenty of parking in the car park and a cheery open fire adds to the charm. There is a function room and private dining room (we had a good nosey around) and there are murals on one wall of the famous faces that used to frequent - Rod Stewart, Noel Edmonds, U2 and various famous faces from an epic time in British music history. It's not a music venue as such now but there are occasional bands, quiz nights and other events on. Worth checking in if you are passing through or are nearby. Acts such as U2, Status Quo, Thin Lizzy and John Peel himself are all said to have played there in their early career. Obviously the pub has changed radically since those heady days of rock and roll. The old hall upstairs which was used as the club can still be hired out for events. With its large windows and stripped floor it has a fantastic charm for an intimate wedding or celebration. However, you will be pleased to hear that there is no evidence of the 70's disco that it used to be. The restaurant downstairs is a revelation to the village. Chris the head chef has brought high quality dining to the area much like his predecessor brought quality rock bands. His menu is interesting without being pretentious with classics such as game, steak and chicken sitting beside a great fish menu. The selection changes regularly so each time there is something new to try. His wine list is also very strong and we have enjoyed many a night sampling a range of grape derived delights. The pub offers private dining as well as the hall and restaurant so it can cater for family groups of up to 10 or 12 people. On the nights we have been there the place has been busy so I recommend booking ahead of time. In conclusion I would highly recommend this place if you are in mind for top notch food in a historic setting.

Again both excellent and The steak and red wine pie came with two sides, one being mashed potatoes. Such a generic and ordinary side, but they were absolutely wonderful. Best mashed potatoes I've ever eaten, hands-down. Something extraordinary about them. The atmosphere, warmth of the place, and decor are also very nice. I would definitely recommend this pub and go back if I am ever in the area again. Honestly the only reason it did not get five stars is because of an issue charging my credit card twice at checkout. I went to Toro Latino for the first time last night for a friend's birthday meal, we were a group of 7 and it proved an excellent choice of venue. It was my first experience of tapas - and for those not in the know - the basic premise is that you choose a variety of small dishes which everyone then shares. It worked well for our group. The restaurant is cosy - ie quite small but with a vibrant and friendly atmosphere and the food is excellent. On a saturday night night they have 2 sittings. The first from about 7 until 8.45 and the second from 8.45 until closing (we left at around 10.45). On arrival we have to grab another chair as there was still a couple of diners from the previous sitting still chatting at one of the tables reserved for us. It was a bit selfish of them, and I don't blame the restaurant. Anyway they left about 10 minutes later. We received the menus promptly but then had to wait a while before we were asked about drinks. A restaurant should attend to this as soon as you sit down in my opinion. The menu is excellent - plenty of seafood, plenty of meat dishes and plenty of vegetarian dishes. Could maybe add a couple more desserts on there though. The wine list is good - we had 4 bottles of rioja between us at an affordable £12.50 per bottle. We stared with 3 salads, a paella and a meat and cheese board between 7 - and straight away I was impressed with the stanard of fayre on offer. Quality chorizo and serrano ham, and a delicious cheese containing orange peel were some highlights, although I felt there could have been more prawns and chicken in the paella. I love food, and it was a really fun experience when the main dishes arrived. We were passing the dishes between us and trying a little of everything. The mussels were good, the anchovies and the tiger prawns were delicous (and complemented so well by the rioja). The steak enchilladas and the new potatoes were really spicy and the stuffed jalapenos mouthwatering. Between the 7 of us we ordered about 16 dishes, probably 2 or 3 too many in all honesty. So I'd recommend 2 dishes per person. We still had plenty salad and such left from the starters to go with the mains. we were all stuffed after the meal, although I did manage to squeeze in a slice of cheesecake. ;) delicious. We paid £25 each - including a tip. And that got us a table crammed with delicious and exciting foods and plenty to drink (4 bottles decent red between the 5 of us who were drinking). I'd definitely recommend Toro Latino as an excellent restaurant with quality food, and as a really fun eating experience - especially for a medium to large sized group. I'll definitely go there again. =)

The McDonald's of Italian eateries…read more Zizzi has a nice location at the top end of Market Harborough; just away from the town centre. The restaurant is well presented to the potential patron - with 2 small potted trees flanking the entrance. Inside we are greeted by a waiting area, and some steps to the larger eating space. There are also more tables around the corner, leading to a conservatory (open only at weekends). The kitchen is open - and you can view your meals being cooked if you want to. I didn't see a microwave though which was odd considering the low quality of some of the food. I've eaten at Zizzi quite a few times - always at lunch - with work colleagues, and very often the place reminds me of a high quality creche - with upper class mums and screeching children making for a rather annoying atmosphere. Furthermore the poor quality of the tasteless, stodgy pasta always makes me grimace. Recently I had calamari - at £10.00 for a main course. The fried squid was nice, although there was very little of it, and I was still hungry when I left. Generally the food is not of a high standard, although I can recommend the Calzone Carne Piccante - a calzone with green chilli, mushrooms, tomator sauce, chicken and beef. It's tasty and huge. If you want a decent Italian meal in Market Harborough I would recommend Prego on St Mary's Road, and I would advise to avoid Zizzi.
