I've been on the search for a good banh canh after having the most amazing one in Vietnam. However, it has been a hard search because most places don't sell this item so I came here just for this item. It was good compared to others I've tried but still missing a flavor in the broth. Service was quick. The guy who gave us the menus handed us with a paper to write down our order but didn't speak which was fine because we understood what we had to do. Everything was cooked as we ordered and the vegetable spring rolls were amazing and piping hot when they came out. We couldn't even eat/touch them until our main dishes came out. They were also quick to refill our waters as well. Interestingly enough, the guy who handed us our menus actually finally spoke perfect English when we went to pay. I got takeout at Huong's for my husband and I and overall we were happy with our meals. I got the Grilled beef, grilled chicken and spring roll vermicelli ($11.75) for myself and the Grilled beef, grilled chicken and grilled shrimp on rice for my husband ($11.75). The beef was really tender and flavourful. I did get a fatty and gristley piece though :( but on the most part, the beef was lean. The chicken was lean and a tiny bit dry, but still flavourful a tasty. The shrimp were medium sized and ok. Not that plump nor juicy, but for the price, not surprising. The spring roll was mostly wrapper and too oily for my liking. The rice dish came with fresh cucumbers and pickled radishes and pickled carrots. The vermicelli dish came with shredded lettuce and bean sprouts, which were underneath the vermicelli. It also came with pickled carrots and crushed peanuts. The fresh vegetables were fresh and the picked vegetables had a good sour bite to them. We also got a tub of fish sauce, which neither of us like, but my dad does, so I saved it and gave it to him on the weekend when I went to see my parents. I appreciated that they labelled the fish sauce with a warning to open slowly (with a smiley face, lol). Food is packed in styrofoam, which is not my preference for environmental and health reasons. Service was very courteous and efficient. I was told it would be 25 minutes. I returned in 22 minutes and they were just tying up the bag. Perfect timing! Note that the prices on their takeout menu (pictured) are outdated. My dishes were listed as $9.50 each on the menu, but I was charged $11.75, which is still a great deal. Prices have gone up as a result of the Covid Pandemic, so I get it. I would just suggest that they print new takeout menus. The restaurant is a little off the beaten path in Chinatown. First time being in Ottawa in a long time. This place was recommended to me. I had a #13 (I think) and the wife had a papaya salad. We shared the Viet pancake as well. This place is a very friendly mom and pop shop. When the salad came it was light and refreshing. Flavour was very good, and went really well with the fish sauce. The pho itself, aroma was really nice, big portions of meat and very fresh noodles . The pancake was something different for me to try and it was a very nice addition to pick at while eating our dishes. Only complaint I would have if even would be the metal chopsticks. Really never been a fan of those. Would definitely go again, If in the area, try some other items on the menu, or stick with delicious soup noodles . read more

I have come back a few more time and the quality has only gone up. The ban xeo (Vietnamese pancake) remains really well made as it has always been. The betel leaf wrapped beef rolls is also nicely done. The deep fried rice wrapped spring rolls with shrimp and pork remains tasty. The pandan jelly with coconut pudding I had today was just ok. I prefer the red bean coconut drink for dessert but that can be a personal preference. read more

That was a very disappointing experience for me, it's been a while since I ate outside and I had a craving for spicy Asian food. if I have to summarize it all: Food 1 Star, Service 4 Stars, Price 3 Stars overall 2 Stars (because of the service, not the food). My egg rolls were very dry and although I ordered the vegetarian ones it tasted like it had some meat inside, the owner promised me its not meat but Taro. I am not sure about it, maybe cross-contamination? but still not tasty. The main dish itself came with a very heavy and sweet sauce and if I wasn't starving I would probably have left it untouched. We were visiting from out of town, and were craving late night pho. The reviews on Yelp led us here. I was super excited, because pho is my go to comfort food. Between the two of us, we ordered two bowls of pho and spring rolls. The spring rolls were good, no complaints about it. However the pho broth at this restaurant was by far the worst that I have ever had. It was super diluted, and I felt that I was only drinking water and salt. I tried adding sauces into it without any luck. My boyfriend's pho had slightly more taste, but was still diluted. I'm hoping the pot that my broth came from was a one off, due to the number of positive reviews on this restaurant. But never have I had such a bad experience with pho. read more

So I've been back a few more times then I've "checked in" on Yelp and yes it still is a good place to eat. The only issue I've had is that we got charged $5 for a small, and I mean small, like kids size, like rice bowl size of pho noodles and only broth, no meat no nothing extra. This was a small request for my youngest daughter cause thats all she likes to eat. Don't get me wrong, we knew there would be a charge but $5??? Thats almost the price of a small pho with meat.. A small thing in a bigger picture so we'll continue to eat at this great place just off of the main "ChinaTown" drag, unless of course something more happens which will sway me from not coming back ever. We came here because of the great review but was left hungry and disappointed. The service was terrible at the get go. My friend asked about an item not on the menu to the waiter and he just pointed at the menu board without saying a word and turned his back at him. We order two bun bo hue and went it came out I was disgusted. The meat was old and the broth was cold. My friend kept his but I order pho instead. I also asked for garnish from that rude waiter and did not receive any so I again asked another waiter. He was good but knew we were disappointed. We will Never go back! Fresh, delicious, and good value!!! For an appetizer I got the fried rice cake with egg. There were THREE whole fried eggs in the dish - wow! But what blew me away was how CRISPY the coating was...they really know how to fry things well! I could of kept eating this...I had NO leftovers LOL. I had the vermicelli with sugar cane shrimp, bbq pork, and bbq sausage. Tasty and fresh, and meats are grilled just right! Also tried a durian shake, which tasted fruity and fresh, but I realized I don't really like durian in a drink form...in cheesecake it's much better. I wanted to exchange it for an avocado shake and the young male server said he could, but then came back and said they couldn't. It was only $4 so I would of done the switch to make customers happy, but oh well. The great food made up for it! They just renovated their washrooms so it's quite spacious and modern. Absolutely loved this place! The food was so fresh and full of flavor! It took us a while to figure out how to use the rice wrappers but it caused a lot of laughs in the process. The service was also amazing. Hubby has a shellfish allergy and the chef came out to double check and verify that he also wasn't allergic to peanuts. I would absolutely recommend this place. 2nd time coming here. I ordered #13 (rare beef, brisket, tripe and tendon). What I found off is that this place uses a thicker noodle than most Pho place. I find that the thicker noodles don't soak up much of the flavor from the broth. Also, the rare beef was in chunks and not thin sliced like most places. Aside from the brisket, the meat was a bit chewy. We also ordered spring rolls (deep fried rice paper ones) and ordered a salad roll to go. The spring rolls werenreally good! What I didn't like was that the abndance of lettuce they used seem to overwhelm the salad roll. Wasn't a big fan of it. Would I come back here again? No. I would go elsewhere. read more

Vietnamese eating has it's own terminology which I am just starting to explore. This week I tried Bánh xèo which means "sizzling cake" (per wikipedia): Bánh xèo ""sizzling cake", named for the loud sizzling sound it makes when the rice batter is poured into the hot skillet are Vietnamese savoury fried pancakes made of rice flour, water, turmeric powder, stuffed with slivers of fatty pork, shrimp, diced green onion, and bean sprouts." It was delicious. I am definitely going back. Apparently few places in Ottawa have these pancakes (Bánh xèo). My chef husband was a little disappointed by quantity and variety of herbs and lettuces. Came here with a large group. They were accommodating of our large group after we made a reservation. Ambiance is nonexistent, I have a high tolerance for these hole-in-the-wall type joints ONLY if the food is knockout authentic and delicious. This place was.. neither! Banh canh cua gio heo: From the special menu written up on the wall. This is a South Vietnamese crab soup with boiled pork slices. The broth is the typical spectacular orange colour but with a barely passable (I'm talking a D-) level of authenticity. To the beginner level diner who appreciates crab however, they will like this. The noodles are thick and to me the texture was too mushy and overdone. Portion size good for the price. Banh xeo: Vietnamese crepe with veggies and pork. Horrible crispy thick hard-to-cut texture with no flavour!! Worst banh xeo I had in my life, almost couldn't recognize it was banh xeo. Our party also ordered bun, pho, and rice dishes. Nobody was impressed. Look, it's Ottawa, it's cold, you're hungry. Even that is a poor excuse to come here when you could buy a couple shawarma instead. If you absolutely must have a Vietnamese soup bowl, this will satisfy your hunger due to the generous portion sizes. But it won't satisfy your hunger for inspiring, vibrant cooking which we Vietnamese normally excel at. read more

My BF had been here previously and commented on the good (cheap!) prices of the dishes so he brought me here for lunch on a Monday around 1pm. The place was quiet with only 1 other table with customers. The service was good, we received menus and drinks right away and our food came fairly quickly. I ordered rare beef pho (medium) and it was 8.50$. BF ordered a bowl of vermicelli with BBQ pork and spring roll which was 7.50$. I think these prices are more than fair for the food you get at this Vietnamese restaurant. Though it was nothing extraordinary, the food was delicious and we had no complaint. We would come back here for lunch or dinner, and highly recommend giving it a try if you're in the area! read more

Came here based on all the overrated reviews but was truly disappointed. Tried their special Hainanese chicken rice since we were told their kitchen staff came out of New Mee Fung across the street and Hainanese chicken rice was one of New Mee Fung's specialties. We were very disappointed already when the rice dish came out with basically just a chicken leg on top a plate of cheap rice. Usually, you got a mixture of white meat and dark meat from New Mee Fung. That was not the big issue. One of the big issues was the chicken actually lacked any good chicken favour which was one of the main selling points of Hainanese chicken rice. They needed to use better and fresher chicken for sure. Another big issue was that the half of the chicken leg was raw and not eatable at all (see pic). You could easily get food poisoning from eating raw chicken!!! Also tried their special pho too. Although they gave you plenty of beef, the raw beef was not that tender at all. The beef tripe was cut so thin that it was thinner than the thin noodles they used. You could not even enjoy the tripe texture at all. The worst part of eating a pho was luke warm broth and they served you exactly luke warm broth. My throat was very sensitive to msg. After eating the pho, my throat felt dry and comfortable for hours. I would recommend agaisnt eating their pho unless you have very low expectation in quality and taste. read more

Definitely a cut above the usual Vietnamese restaurants in terms of quality and ambience. Service is terrific. Owner was the server during my visit. Charming guy, although he scolded me about putting too much hot sauce in my soup. The banh xeo is as terrific as other Yelpers say. It is a crispy fried pancake filled with a mixture of pork, shrimp, bean sprouts and green onion.. Share it with a friend. The satay soup is also very good. Quite different from the usual pho because broth is meaty and rich - almost like a stew. It is very filling once you add the noodles (and all that hot sauce.) I had lots to take home. Parking on Booth Street is not quite as bad as Somerset but anyplace near Chinatown is poor. Take your chances on the side streets. Being from Halifax, when my boyfriend began trying to coerce me to eat here, I was against it. I've only had Halifax pho and my experiences have been less than savoury, leading me to believe I just hated pho altogether... Nope! This little gem completely changed my opinion. My problem wasn't that I didn't like pho, it was that I had never had GOOD pho. Now we make coming here Saturday mornings our weekend ritual. On the suggestion from another reviewer, I tried the Bun Bo Hue and it instantly became my favourite. You probably don't want to get it if you're wearing a white shirt though, like I did. Red broth and slurping noodles is not smart with a white shirt :P I also tried the vermicelli bowls and they are equally delicious, with just the right amount of peanuty goodness and crunchy veggies. The spring rolls and Vietnamese iced coffee are both a must if you are visiting here for the first time. Flaky crust on the rolls and strong, milky slow drip coffee is the perfect accompaniment to your meal. It's worth noting we also tried the place across the street. Everything was 2-3 dollars more expensive there and it was not so great, less than mediocre. We stared longingly across the street during that poor decision. The pho is ok, but nothing special. The broth is very salty and beef flavoured, but lacked the distinct spices that make pho, pho. Same for the bun bo hue. The broth tasted like pre-made tom-yum soup paste and the lemongrass was a bit over powering. The prices have also gone up: 8$ for a small, 9$ for a medium et 10$ for a large. The service was friendly, and the restaurant is fairly clean. All in all, decent pho, but there are better options. read more

Unfortunately, the pho was a bit disappointing: broth too lightly seasoned (for my taste--I like it rich), the meats were slightly dry, and the noodles bland (because the broth wasn't flavourful enough). The first time I went there was on a thursday night with co workers. From outside, the restaurant looked old and sketchy. There were only a few customers. I had a pho dac biet which I thought wasn't too special in terms of flavor. The second time I went there was on a friday, lunchtime and with different co workers. At first glance, even at daylight, it looked sketchy as my co workers asked me if it was really the place. This time, with more customers, I felt a bit more reassured. A co-worker and I have found a review on their bun bo hue on the internet. The bun bo hue isn't on the main menu but it was indicated on a small board on the wall and only comes in one size. As it sounded fancy and we shared the review on internet, all my co worker copied my order. I did enjoy the Bun Bo Hue as it was very spicy and heavily flavored with enough meat. Finally, there is a vietnamese restaurant in Ottawa that I like! Also, a co-worker stated that the bun bo hue exceeded his expectations. 2 co workers couldn't finish their dish as it was too spicy for them and also too much food. So for all those reasons, I highly recommend their bun bo hue. I didn't put 5 stars because I didn't like their pho. read more

We visited Huong Bistro previously a number of times when it was at the old location, the food was delicious then but the place was small and needed update. Now at the new location, the restaurant is by far, one of the nicest Vietnamese joint in town. My favorite is the BBQ pork that you wrap yourself, reminding me the time when I was young living in southern Vietnam. read more

From a Vietnamese's perspective, this place has the most flavorful ph in Ottawa. Most importantly, the flavor isn't fake (for example when it comes from a broth can or bouillon) or doesn't just taste like salt + MSG. Although the broth isn't as rich as ph would desire to be (which, you probably have to go to Vietnam for that - or maybe Toronto), it is very decent. On top of that, if you ask them for their special noodles (the ones that are even special in Vietnam), you will also be impressed. These noodles are listed on their white board, which unfortunately are only in Vietnamese and Chinese. These noodles are not just "special" because they want to add more things into their menu. They are special because this restaurant wants to offer them and they offer them truly. Their bún riêu (crab-meat soup) is impressive. While their bún bò Hu is not the favorite amongst the Ottawa-Vietnamese, it is also very flavorful. Last but not least, their vermicelli is also wonderful, and this is based on how they marinated their meat. They should add more vegetables into the vermicelli bowl though, I think. Went here twice on a recent trip to Ottawa. Everything was delicious, from the jicama rolls to the crab and tomato soup (bun rieu cua), the satay soup to the banh xeo. Wide selection of shakes and tapioca-based drinks. Friendly, helpful service. I will definitely return on my next trip! And I returned in mid-March of this year on another trip to Ottawa. Very good food! I have eaten the pho, rice wraps that you make on your own as well as the spring rolls. All very well presented and good portion sizes for the prices you pay. I do find it difficult to use the metal chopstick utensils to eat the noodles. I also found that there was not enough carrots and cucumber for the rice wraps on the platter. Parking is a bit of an issue as there is not much available space on the other side of the street during busy times and the parking lot is difficult to maneuver in. read more
