We take our two dogs Ry and Abbi to Hurley Vet Hospital for their regular checkups and routine procedures such as spay surgery. We have also taken them in for urgent care such as to treat "dietary indiscretion." We have always received caring, professional service, and we trust their recommendations. Prices are high, but they are high everywhere. I was skeptical of their conversion to using an online pharmacy, but I have found that the prices are comparable to what I would find if I bought the medications at other pet pharmacies online. It is convenient for me and a more efficient way for the vets to provide prescriptions. We will be staying with Hurley Vet. read more

I can not give ENOUGH praise for Hurley vets especially for their associate vet Dr. DANIELLE SCHAFER. My 16 year old dog, Kes, was seen by her usual vet in August for her annual. I brought their attention to an open sore on her ear flap and they put it down to her "just being old". I had tried many different treatments at home but the wound had become infected and ulcerated. Her usual vet didn't even clean away the area so they could have a proper look at it! I took her for a 2nd opinion emergency appointment to Dr. Schafer at Hurley Vets who immediately suggested that the wound needed immediate attention and possibly removal. The attentive vet tech whisked her away and took blood fron her jugular vein (last vet techs poked her 3 times and were still unable to draw blood) Dr. Schafer gave her a 2 week shot of antibiotics as I knew it would be really difficult to give her the meds orally twice a day. This alleviated so much stress for both of us. A few days later my little one had surgery to remove half of her ear. The mass result came back as cancerous. She had another growth removed from her real leg too as it was getting larger amd I aas afraid the same would happen to it. All the staff were pleasant and extremely helpful. Dr. Schafer even helped me out with transport for my little one, kept in touch with me throughout the whole experience and obviously loves animals with all her heart. She is a kind, loving, helpful, honest soul and a wonderful, compassionate, capable, super-smart vet. My little one has recovered 100% and has tons more energy now thanks to the removal of the cancer as well as being given medicine for her osteoarthritis and a supplement for her liver. She has no doubt added quality time to this little old lady's lifespan and I could not be more thankful or appreciative to Dr. Danielle Schafer. read more

We were clients starting in 2002 and were happy with the practice when Dr. Rosenberg owned it but it went downhill dramatically when mvet partners bought the practice -- care became much worse, prices skyrocketed, and it was clear they put profits ahead of pets. They pressure you to use their online pharmacy, where prices are much higher than you can find elsewhere, and they pushed us to buy a food that was made of -- seriously -- alligator meat. One of the very few practices which will treat chickens. Those of us with pet chickens are just as attached to them as to any other pet, and it is so disheartening to be turned away by most vets. My bantam rooster has been Dr. Gunzburg's patient for over 10 years, having been treated for a potentially crippling leg injury, a broken clavicle (nobody can figure out how he broke it), and an impacted oil gland for which he needed surgery. He is now 12 years old, ancient for a chicken, and I attribute his continued good health to the superb care he has gotten at Hurley Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Gunzburg has been wonderful with my little rooster, handling him kindly, answering my many questions, and giving me hope back in the days when I feared that the leg injury would be disabling. He has prescribed various medications over the years, such as Metacam, and specially compounded doses of Gabapentin suitable for avian patients. Prices seem quite reasonable to me, although I do not have pet insurance (which is only available for cats and dogs anyway). I had been hesitant finding a vet for my reactive dog. My grandmother has been going here for years and recommended me to them for an emergency my fur baby was having. Upon walking in, the front desk staff were super amazing and friendly and my dog seemed super comfortable with them (he does like women more). We saw Dr. Schafer and her care team and he loved them (minus not wanting his tummy touched). Dr. Schafer and her team were very patient and professional even when my dog did start to show signs of aggression from being overstimulated in a place he didn't know. Dr. Schafer gave me an amazing plan for our next appointment to keep him calm and she and the whole Hurley Vet team have eased all of my anxiety about bringing him to a new vet. We have been going to the Hurley Veterinary Hospital since 2019 when we moved to the area. We have brought all 4 of our pets there during that time. In the last year, we have had 3 significant medical emergencies with our pets that required semi-immediate attention. Trying to get an appt, even an emergency one, at this place has been impossible. What's worse, the staff doesn't seem to care at all. No matter how dire our need we still get the "Unfortunately, we have no appointments until" blah blah blah... nonsense. Our issues were escalated to the manager/owner who promised this would change, especially given how often we go and how much we spend. Nothing has changed and the staff still doesn't care, at least those that schedule appointments. Over the summer, one of our dogs ran over a piece of broken glass and was cut deeply and badly. He was bleeding pretty significantly and showing no signs of stopping. We called Hurley and, as expected, no appointments. After explaining the severity of the situation, they could not accommodate us, instead, providing emergency animal hospital info for places more than an hour away, rather than the more local areas such as Kingston. In the end, we called the Woodstock Animal Hospital and even though they were booked, they made time for us IMMEDIATELY. Our dog needed several stiches as he continued to bleed until those were put in. He basically bled constantly for over 45 minutes. More recently, our cat with FUTD needs some care since his symptoms are showing again and, again, no appointments until December! He needs more immediate attention than that and while he can wait a couple of days for a vet visit, waiting until December is pointless. While we have had a more consistent and decent experience with the vets, that has also declined over the years. Where once they treated our pets with sensitivity and concern, now they treat them like a product. We won't be coming back, preferring to use the Woodstock Animal Hospital which seems to have a better grasp on what "emergency" means and why it's important. I would not recommend this veterinary to anyone. read more

Unfortunately, to say the least a HORRIBLE experience going to this Vet. Brought our dog there for neutering. Got him home with an infection on his leg which cost us more money for further Dr. visits as well as medicine. Still has a permanent scar on his leg and worse than that he appears to have nerve related "hot spots" from the epidural that left two bald spotson his back and worse is my dogs discomfort four months now and counting. We left this Vet and have nothing good to say about it. read more

Mark Rosenberg heads up a great staff of vets. He was especially great with my Jack Russell Effie up to and during her death. He helped me to get her diagnosed after his original treatment didn't work & referred us to a great specialist in Latham. Then followed up himself and stayed in touch during treatment & chemotherapy which sadly ended in his performing a very compassionate euthanasia with his assistant at our home. They were so kind, and made us cast of her paw print which I treasure. I can't give them enough praise. They care. read more

The front staff are very nice and well-educated very polite but the doctor does not have any compassion for the pets is all about his money as you can see by the prices he's ridiculously expensive my dog needed a surgery he was three times as much as everyone else and the worst thing is my dog had a terrible skin allergy and he refused to write him a prescription until I bring him in to see him so he can get more money out of me and let my dog suffer that right there tells me he cares nothing about these animals he's all about his money! read more

Dr. Brady is an incredible human being. She has been the main vet in the care of both my senior cat and senior dog who both have unfortunately passed away related to cancer (within the same year). She's compassionate with both humans and (especially) fur babies, obviously passionate about what she does, and takes the time to explain her rationale for medications/lab testing. I feel comfortable and confident in her ability to care for my sweet, sweet babies. The rest of the staff - from the receptionists to the vet techs - are pretty fabulous too! So I needed to find a vet quickly, but was in a bit of a $$ crisis. I mean no one wants to spend their whole bank account on a vet visit right? Well this office is very reasonable, and I couldnt complain. I called later in the evening and spoke to Michelle, I believe who was so sweet and helpful on the phone. She was friendly and made me an appointment for the next day. The next day I was running a bit late but they still let me keep my appointment! Yay. So when I got there, it was very clean and smelled clean too. Thats a plus! The staff is pretty friendly, and thats an important thing when your in distress over your cherished pet. They treated my cat with so much care and respect that I felt comfortable and a little more at ease. They were honest about the cost of things, and the vet really took the time to talk to me and explain what was going on, and how the treatment plan would play out. They helped me figure out a payment option as well. All in all, I will definitely keep them as my vet, and when I need to take my dog to the vet, guess what? Thats right, he is going here! Unfortunately unethical and dishonest practices drove us from Hurley Vets after many years of taking our pets there. First the good: I always found the vets friendly, and they seemed good with our animals. The problematic stuff is how in the last couple of years we ALWAYS left with expensive prescriptions (that turned out to be overpriced supplements). Hurley Vets also always push for expensive testing and are extremely pushy about vaccinating our elderly pets who have no need of repeating them anymore (esp. after bad reactions to the lepto vaccine). The first time I realized they were unethical was when I was trying to find out about an expensive prescription my then 15 yo dog had just been prescribed. I asked repeatedly what the drug was in the $100 per month prescription that my pet was meant to be on for the rest of her life only to be baffled as to why Dr Gunzberg who was usually extremely forthcoming was obfuscating. Eventually he gave up and to my shock admitted it was a supplement. Even more disappointing was the fact that this was for the common and inexpensive glucosamine/chondroitin/fatty acids that could be found many places without the outrageous price tag. That's if I was convinced by the studies which are sadly totally unconvincing (most show no effect in pain relief) for joint issues. That was two years ago, and my 17 yo dog is still bouncing around like a puppy. I bet if I was on their expensive 'prescription' I would go into the anecdotal evidence they love to quote about how great they've seen this product work. Next time when I wasn't around, the 'medicine' and 'prescription', all words used by the Dr Baker to make my husband think that he was getting an actual approved drug was given this time for our 17 yo cat. Only on getting it home and doing due diligence did we find out what we were paying big bucks to give our kitty was actually probiotics with a fancy name with big claims to help renal disease and no convincing studies to prove efficacy. In fact the company that makes the probiotic went to a pretty big effort to obscure what was in the product and used some pretty unethical language also describing itself as 'dialysis' and other such language despite no reliable evidence that probiotics help the kidneys at all. When I called to complain about being sold a supplement as a medicine, Dr Baker continued to call it medicine and defended the decision to prescribe them without giving us a choice while claiming anecdotal evidence as his guiding reasoning. Any doctor knows claiming efficacy based on clients positive reports is dishonest and he eventually admitted that not telling us that it was a supplement and allowing choice to purchase is unethical. He apologized. But only after I had reasoned that his anecdotal reports were nothing close to scientific given the fact that any cat diagnosed with renal disease would have been placed on a kidney diet and other prescriptions making anecdotal reports on the supplements totally unclear. However he offered no refund, and hung up on me while muttering something about needing to do something. When I called back, the office manager attacked me viciously. She claimed I was a liar as well as my husband, and said that Dr Baker claimed he had told my husband it was a supplement even though on the phone to me Dr Baker only ever called it medicine and never claimed to have told my husband it was a probiotic. She denigrated me and repeatedly asked where I got my information and said 'where'd you get this? Google?' in a highly derisive tone. When I tried to explain that there are numerous resources for finding relevant studies she blew me off and spoke to me as if I was too dumb to even bother with. When I said I was really surprised they were prepared to lose our business after all these years and thousands of dollars over $60, she couldn't have cared less. I was even more shocked when I took my now 17 yo dog to Kingston Animal Hospital this week and walked out paying less than $100, despite it being a first visit. This has never happened at Hurley. They always find a reason to do pricy blood tests and sell things. What feels most disturbing after all this time trusting Hurley Vets is how I realize they would diagnose our pets with something potentially scary and during that vulnerable moment would push expensive testing and expensive meds that weren't meds at all. It's extremely cynical and takes advantage of people at their most vulnerable. I feel like a sucker for remaining loyal well beyond my first doubts. FYI I have no problem with taking supplements if you can afford them and they aren't harmful in the off chance they might help and your pet isn't stressed by it. But the way Hurley Vets do it? Disgraceful. I recommend skeptvet for a good online resource. read more

I recently brought our 17 year old cat in for euthanasia due to slow decline from diabetes and thyroid issues. The staff were compassionate and understanding of the emotions involved in the decision making. All options were given and the final decision was mine. The doctor gave Elizabeth the sedative and final shot. The doctor was very compassionate and treated the issue with a personal connection. Thank you all read more

They were slow to diagnose my dogs nasal cancer which was critical to his survival. Dr Rosenberg who failed to correctly assess my dog having a tumor growing in his nose choosing to give him a antibiotic wait and see attitude instead of realizing it was nasal cancer which must be addressed quickly in order to control it from spreading fast. He made a few comments like if I was Donald Trump I could take care of him insinuating I was 2 poor to have my dog treated which was inappropriate and unprofessional to say the least. As a result my dog suffered and I watched my best friend die and still spent about $700 dollars to treat him. The only answer he gave me was to put him down and thought I was selfish for hanging on to my best friend. Hopefully he will learn from this and next time he will tell the owner the risks of nasal cancer and push them to do a biopsy right away instead of sitting back and waiting while the cancer spreads. He failed to notify me of treatment options or to direct me somewhere he could be treated for this disease. Dr Rosenberg is a good vet but he failed me and Elroy is few ways.. it is almost a year since he died and I miss him very much. Unfortunately vet costs are very expensive and they make a lot of money from the business like said the Donald Trump comments were inappropriate and demeaning to me which indicated its all about he money and how they see you when you walk through the door. bringing politics and money on top of everything instead of my dogs well being. The fact is Dr Rosenberg the house I come from has more money then any1 you have ever met one day you will find that out and feel pretty dumb for making that comment to me at that time. that being said I loved my Dog Elroy he was the best there was even to the last day when he let me know it was time. a hard thing for any pet lover top deal with it was my first I put him down at Saugerties animal hospital and they were excellent in how they handled it and very fair in price 2 so I would go there for my next dog. I think they are less about the money then Hurley Vet. Dr Rosenberg I know you tried to be nice and were in many ways but unfortunately you made few errors as well which i hope you do not make again with the next person its not all about the money that is the problem today. read more

January 10th 2016 Andy's story. Everything you are going to read about our experience with the Hurley Veterinarian Hospital and Dr. Rosenberg is accurate, true and documented. We brought our cat in for routine dental checkup before a cleaning with anesthesia. All the blood work was done and the and the result was all positive and healthy. While being checked I mentioned that Andy had a slight limp from a jump he made two days earlier. Dr Rosenberg strongly suggested to give the drug Metacam, a pain reliever to the cat for a week for the limp. At home we gave the Metacam as directed for two days. We found Andy laying in pain under a table the next morning. We rushed him into Dr. Rosenbergs office. We were called later in the day and were told that the cat had kidney poisoning the result we found out from the Metacam we were given. The poor Cat was given IV fluids and stayed at the hospital for several days. It turned out that the Metacam destroyed 70 percent of his Kidney function. The poor cat also had bleeding stomach ulcers and high blood pressure all from the Metacam. We removed Andy from Hurley Veterinary Hospital and brought him to a Medical Center near Albany. The Veterinarians there could not believe that our Cat was given Metacam. We were told that Metacam is not used for Cats period. The company which makes Metacam, Boehringer Pharmaceuticals states it never should be used on Cats as it is a powerful NANSID medication which will destroys a Cats Kidneys and cause stomach ulcers and will cause death. Please never give you pet any medication without checking it out first. On the Internet Metacam is listed with the many Cats it has killed. Our cat lived a little while after and had we had to IV the poor Boy every other day. It was all horrible for him and us. Dr. Rosenberg never accepted responsibility or said he was sorry. My advice do not walk away from this place, run from it. Andy died and was buried on our property and every time I walk by his grave I blame myself for ever taking him to the Hurley Veterinarian Hospital. read more

First visit I was very happy with this place, and review would have been 5 stars. Second visit I brought my cat, and it was recommended he have lots of tests. I'm still happy with the place but not with some fees, hence 3 stars. Among other things, the vet showed me that my cat needs dental work. I was told the treatment would cost between $500-$600+, depending on what they found. I called another reputable vet I've used and the cost for dental cleaning without blood work (since that was already done) starts at $136!!! Hurley is reasonable in some regards, but if your pet requires a non-emergency procedure it could be worth your time to look around. read more

I want to let every one know what a terrific experience it has been to take my pet to Hurley Vet Hospital. Twice my rabbit needed an abscess surgically removed and both times the procedure and everything surrounding her care went very well. Both times Dr. Gunzberg performed the operation and both times (3.5 years in between) she bounced back right away with no ill side effects. It's risky to give anesthesia to a creature weighing 3 lbs. They did everything right. I have also experienced excellent care for all basic check ups. Generally speaking, I find them to be caring and thorough. It's not always easy to find vets who deal with "exotics" but I say they are excellent with rabbits! Thumbs up! read more

Went to Hurley veterinary hospital looking for an honest 2nd opinion for my dogs ongoing ear infection. Got there early and provided all written documents we had. Didn't get scene till over an hr past our appointment time. Office staff was friendly but we felt Dr. Enkler was not really the right vet for us. She provided good care however it seemed like she wanted too many follow up visits and the cost of a culture test was double of what we had just paid at kingston animal hospital. that made us feel like they were trying to take advantage of us. For 17 years we felt good about Hurley Vet. Dr. Rosenberg was very kind and seemed so caring, although he was a little bit unclear with some minor diagnosis. But just recently he misdiagnosed our elder dog, and prescribed heavy medication which he said with a smile , had no side affects. I had concerns about both the number of vaccinations he did in one day, and also about adding more meds at the same time. He was very sure that there would be no problem and was forceful, so I agreed against my better judgement. Our dog did have a difficult reaction , and i learned that some side affects were seizure and death.I wanted to take her off all meds right away since she has a history of sensitivity , but he seemed aggravated and insisted I keep her on one of the meds. I got a second opinion and received a very different diagnosis and treatment plan which rejected also what I had to say about my dogs reactions.The meds he prescribed were also almost $400.00 a month. We are still working hard to help our dog recover from all this, back to the health she had before the shots and two days of meds. read more
