As second-time visitors, we were incredibly shocked to hear the pastor, from the "pulpit," literally chide and shame the congregants who were not wearing face masks, calling them words like 'immature' and 'childish.' It is certainly no one's business why someone else without a face mask on is that way-- their medical condition, religion, whatever-- so to have a pastor treat people that way was very sad. These examples clearly aren't the type of leadership and church atmosphere the Bible calls for!

Inside the classic brick building a semicircular arrangement of pews tells you that this church is a church of its congregants who pray and discuss together, not of a leadership that preaches to its members. The First church, literally the first church in Oberlin, was founded along with the College by the leaders of a sect of semi-Utopian, fiery congregationalists who became radical abolitionists. Today, if you read the message of ministry of this church on its web page, you will know that if you are seeking a church that ministers to and of its people, you may find a home at First Church. I was never a member but it made me feel good that Oberlin still boasts a faith community like this one.
