UPDATE: Response to the Owner Thank you for taking the time to respond to my review. To clarify, my experience and rating were not based on the curriculum itself, but on how the sign-up process, cancellation, and communication were handled. This was my first time joining a martial arts studio, so I relied on good faith and clear guidance to understand the terms and expectations. The instructor did mention both a six-month and one-year program after my first class, but there was no discussion that I'd be contractually obligated to either. I was not presented with a formal contract--just a digital signature form on an iPad for recurring payments. I wasn't informed of additional gear costs ($100+tax) until I was ready to the process the payment. Due to a change in my work schedule, I communicated my need to withdraw in text and in person and I did not attend after the first month. I was still charged a second month, and although I disputed that charge, I later learned the studio claimed I continued attending--something I did not do. I changed my card number after this incident to prevent further charges, and I received a failed payment notice after that change. This update is not written with ill intent. I respect the lineage and legacy your family brings to martial arts. My review and this reply are simply meant to offer honest feedback so that new students can be better informed before committing. As a final note, I encourage the studio to also engage with the many positive reviews you've received--not only the critical ones. This place is fantastic. I joined a couple of months ago, and it's been amazing. I was initially hesitant because I was really out of shape. I had spent years at a traditional gym, but as I got older and dealt with multiple injuries from lifting weights, I realized I wasn't doing myself any favors. That's when I decided to try the Adult Beginner Krav Maga class with Matt on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The class allows you to start at your own pace, and it's an incredible workout. More importantly, the self-defense skills we're learning are practical and real. I honestly can't say enough good things about this place. I've been going to Hwang's for just over four years. I am on the older end of the participants, and started in just average shape. It has helped my fitness, activity level, and confidence. The training is appropriately challenging and often intense, but adapts to your level within each class. There is a good variety of class formats and schedule options that make it easy for me to schedule into my life. Matt and Kristina are extremely capable and proficient teachers and run a best-in-class operation. I've been training at Hwang's Martial Arts since 2014, and from day one, I knew I had found something special. What can I say? This gym has it all. You know how there's always that one guy at the gym? You know who I'm talking about. Well.. that guy ain't here. The culture that Matt and Kristina have cultivated immediately weeds that guy out. What you'll find here a is a group of passionate, driven, self-disciplined, and respectful group of martial arts enthusiasts. Many students take Krav Maga and TKD. I found a home here when so many other gyms just didn't do it for me. So much so that I've battled injury, self doubt, and my own self talk to became a better version of myself and now help lead other students in drills and learning self defense and hopefully finding their path. What you'll find here is community, lifelong friends, and some purpose. I've been training Krav Maga for almost 8 years. I've enrolled my daughter in TKD and can see the positive influence already. My kids started martial arts in September 2023, and I joined Krav Maga in November 2023. Amazing place, great business, great workout, and environment. We have made so many friends there, including Christina and Matt. There are always activities to attend outside of class days, like the Christmas party (super fun, adults only), Memorial Day workout, and post-class dinners, etc. Great for kids to learn discipline, respect, responsibility, and hard work under Ms. Hwang's instruction while having fun and earning belts. I started training here three years ago and it's been one of the best decisions I've ever made. I always recommend this place to anyone interested in training because of the incredibly positive environment. The instructors are respectful, knowledgeable, and truly care about your growth. I had the privilege of meeting Kristina and Matt and learned Krav Maga from them! They are both awesome, patient and the classes are not only interesting but fun at same time! I enrolled my 12 year old son at Hwang's Martial Arts so he would get exercise and learn self defense but I got far more than I expected. I started at Hwang's studio a few months ago. I really enjoy the workout. The instructors are very knowledgeable, and really care about the students progress. They constantly walk around the studio during drills, and give how to tips, and suggestions, on form and technique. I had a major health setback a year ago 7/21. I've been doing Martial Arts for the majority of my life, and can be pretty picky about where I train and who with. I started doing the Krav Maga training here a couple years ago and liked the instructors and the class so much I picked up Tae Kwon Do as well. The instruction is about as top quality as it gets, and the other students are great. It's a fantastic place for people of any level to both maintain whatever skills you may already have and to learn some new ones as well. read more
