I stopped in, hoping to find some local cheeses. There wasn't a full cheese counter here as with many other stores in the chain, but the selection was still superior to other grocery stores. Decided to do Wahlburgers for lunch. Dine in the HyVee dining room. Place wasn't too crowded so believed it would be about 10 minutes. No problem. Had time to observe. Most of the people were construction trades on lunch or retirees. An employee went around the dining room picking up trays, detritus etc., but he NEVER cleaned the tabletops with spray cleaners. You have been warned. Burgers finally arrived 20 minutes later, pretty tasty. Nice brown crust on the patty. Side of tots were just right. Only glitch was that the chopped romaine lettuce (asked for everything on it) was dead. Like brown on the edges dead. So maybe get your Wahlburgers to go. read more

This is NOT about the Hy-Vee itself. It is in fact about the new whalburgers located in the store, sadly Hy-Vee gets this review. As I sit here going on 20 minutes waiting for TWO sandwiches, I can tell you the service is terrible. They seem to think changing their menu every week is a great idea, yet they should focus on making decent food, which hasn't happened yet. I'd recommend any other restaurant in town. It's cheaper, feels nicer, better and faster. You'd think they'd at least attempt to stay in business lol read more

Lets see...HyVee. I think I've visited this placed since I was a kid whenever in town. My grandparents have eaten breakfast here for years (probably since the store opened over 20 some years ago). Breakfast quality gets an ok (say like 3 stars maybe), but you can't beat $4.99 for 2 eggs, toast, and hashbrowns. I think $5.69 gets you all that plus bacon or sausage. Store itself is good. All the food you need and they've got a Starbucks, which is what gets it 4 stars. read more

A town of 20,000+ residents should have more than 2 grocery stores (here and WM). But that's a different problem... Pros: They have a decent organic/natural section. Cons (which greatly outweigh the single Pro): They are more expensive by quite a bit than other grocery chains. But they have a stranglehold on the town so you're stuck paying their prices or driving 1/2 hour one way. It takes so so so long to get in and out. But that may be that the entire town can be found there after work... And my personal biggie: The store smells like fish more times than not. It is so unappetizing to walk in and get hit with that fish smell. We've started making trips to Fareway in Sioux Falls every other weekend. I think we're saving about $100-$150 each trip. I takes a little planning but I think it's worth it. read more

This is a great grocery. It's always clean and inviting. The thing that really makes me love it is the "Health Market," where most of the organic and "unconventional" items are (things like Nutritional Yeast, cacao nibs, muesli, tempeh, nondairy yogurt). It seems like that section of the story is continuously expanding, which is great. I always did my grocery shopping here. They have great sales, but even if they didn't, I'd much rather pay a few extra cents for their produce than "save" on the garbage at Walmart. Pretty good store. Always clean and very friendly. There are of course hours of the day that they get SWAMPED being the only full grocery store in town besides Walmart. It is a good idea to plan your shopping outside of the busy times. Five star if we could recieve some of the competative discounts that are giving in Sioux Falls or Marshall. Fun secret, US postal service desk is quick and responsive. Skip the post office, head to Hy-Vee. read more

EXTREMELY POOR customer service!! Can't get help in the store. Tried isle's online... that's even worse (which is hard to imagine)!! Hy Vee Employee Rose was rude!! Went there at my pick up time and was told to come back. Went back and was told to come back the next day. Called the next day around 1pm and they still hadn't started my order. Hy-Vee is a chain of stores that I have always thought of very highly. That was probably because we never actually lived close enough to one to shop there regularly. I have three main issues with this store, but it doesn't matter because if you live in Brookings you are going to shop here no matter what. So stop reading the reviews and just go there, it's the only place besides Wal-mart. First, one day I went in there, and when I checked out, I asked to have paper bags. The cashier said yes, of course, no problem, very politely, then another cashier or bagger come up to help because it was a busy time, and began bagging the groceries in plastic, and I asked her if I could have paper, and the cashier also turned and said, yes, he had asked for paper. She made this weird chuckling noise and then sarcastically said "uh, OK" before giving both of us a dirty look (her co-worker no less) and then balling up the plastic bag and throwing it under the counter with this really grandiose motion. So, you know, friendly folks... Second, this store definitely knows that when you shop, and you see an eisle tag with a sale price directly underneath of an item, you will not spend a lot of time reading the fine print to make sure that the item is the one that is on sale, and they take advantage of that fact. Our brains group things together by proximity among other things, Hy-Vee groups non-sale items with sale tags in close proximity knowing that you won't likely catch it until you look at the receipt until you go home, and then who goes back to the store to complain. (me, that's who!) Third, this place is so expensive. We now drive to Fareway in Sioux Falls twice a month, and even accounting for gas, we are convinced that most items, especially those in the 5 -10 dollar range are approximately 1 dollar cheaper at Fareway. The food prices here are outrageous, I lived in Minneapolis, in the city, and shopped at Byerlys and Whole Foods and I think HyVee is expensive, so if that doesn't mean anything to you, Byerlys and Whole Foods are generally considered to be pretty spendy. Well, off to HyVee to shop for food because I don't feel like driving an hour each way for an alternative. read more

What's not to love? Good prices, friendly staff, well layed out, very nice bakery and meat counter, good deli and best floral department in the area. Store brand is usually pretty good and they have regular sales. I suppose I can try and find some negatives but then I don't really need to because the only other grocery store in town is Walmart and they have plenty of negatives that send you straight back to HyVee. I have lived in the other communities with multiple grocery store options and I still chose HyVee. The Brookings location is one of the best. BTW If you're not taking advantage of their gas discount at the HyVee gas station using your food receipts, you are missing out on some amazing savings. read more

They have good take out chinese at this location which I do consume quite a bit of. Good pizza, and alright bakery (far better than wal-mart's) .. their prices are higher than wally world's but I'd hardly call them extreme. If you want high prices hit up one of the grocery stores in the small towns like Flandreau.. now there's high prices. Their sale prices tend to make up for it.. they get in you the door with those and hope you buy other stuff while you're at it. They are good at keeping the checkout lanes flowing at this location and opening up express lanes as needed which I always appreciate. They have a nice natural food section and carry some delicious wheat free products from a local place out of White. No doubt Brookings lacks decent shopping places compared to it's nearby neighbors like Huron, Watertown, and Marshall. It's more of a bedroom community stuck in between Sioux Falls and Watertown that's grown fast more recently and thus needs these businesses to come in.... read more

Best place to buy groceries near Brookings. Selection of some stuff isn't fantastic but prices are pretty decent. Great meat and seafood counter. Also like the hot food selection. Great salad bar, they have a little restaurant, as well as other hot food to go which is pretty decent. Chinese food is very Americanized but probably the best in Brookings. Good selection of produce and quality is fantastic although the price is a bit higher. Also has a Starbucks inside. read more

I'm pretty impressed! I came from a large metro area, so I was a little concerned about the only grocery store in a town of 22,000. But they have a good produce area - including a variety of fresh mushrooms! Good gluten-free selection, and even some things I didn't expect: lite coconut milk, passata, brown jasmine rice from last week's shopping list. There's a very good meat counter, and if you don't see what you need, chances are they can get it for you. Compared to big-box places, the staff here are cheerful and helpful (and it's employee-owned!). The deli has a good variety of cheeses and meats. There's a small restaurant that I haven't tried, and a salad bar that always has two soups and a hot taco bar. Lots to like here! read more
