We were invited to a wedding here that took place in the barn at Walnut Grove Farm. Let me start…read moreby saying we weren't sure what to expect. As we pulled up the gravel driveway we were directed to park in the grass as there is no formal parking lot. Normally this doesn't bother me but I do drive a very small car that is not meant to go off roading. If it had been rainy or any other kind of not so good weather, I could easily see getting stuck in the grass/mud, so keep that in mind when visiting. The barn is very old and rustic, but in decent condition, however it is EXACTLY that.... a barn. Very drafty and on a 40 degree day, downright cold! The floor is uneven with large gaps, so DO NOT WEAR HIGH HEELS! I only wish I had known this before attending as I spent much of the time watching where I was walking so as not to trip and fall on my face. The walls and ceiling are also very rustic (drafty). It had a large loft filled with straw and hay, therefore they do not generally allow any type of heating source, but they made an exception for the wedding and the families were able to bring three propane heaters. The decor however was lovely. Hanging all around the barn were dried flowers and there were vines wrapped with white lights, giving a beautiful ambiance. The barn has electricity, so the DJ and caterer were able to utilize that amenity, but be warned, there is no restroom. The Bride and Groom actually rented a portable "outhouse" for their guests to utilize. There is a "dance floor" that is down in the barn, which is basially two large flat pieces of wood over the floor, but it at least covers all of the holes so no one breaks an ankle trying to dance! Over all, I think the barn was a beautiful place to have a wedding but I would suggest having your special day sometime during the year that is warmer.

No big deal, I've been to plenty events held in renovated barns to host large events. There's only one problem... This barn isn't renovated. To say its rustic is a polite way of saying it needs some serious maintenance. We were caught unprepared. The floor had gaps in it between just about every board. You could see straight down to the lower section of the barn. Some of these gaps were wide enough that the ladies that were present in heels would get their heel stuck if they were not very careful. I saw it happen a couple of times. The walls are not insulated and there are holes and gaps there too. Making the barn pretty drafty, which last weekend when we were there the temperatures where in the 40's and it was cold. There was no heat. The parents of the bride brought some portable heaters with them, but that wasn't enough to warm such a large building. This time of year, you expect to have cold weather, so if you are planning an event here, keep the outside temperatures in mind. The parking is actually done in the barn yard. If you have a vehicle that is not up to off roading, you'll need to go a little slow, but you'll be okay. I'm not sure what all they use this location for, but it is easy to get from the interstate. It's large and spacious allowing for large groups of people to gather. Overall, I think with a little maintenance and upkeep this could be a really great location.

I visited the Calico on my first trip to Galesburg with a group of friends. They showed me around the town and we ended the trip at Calico Cat. It has a large amount of cool things that, if money weren't an issue, I would have all over my apartment. The staff is beyond amazing and they just offer so much! Candles, fudge, coloring books, wall art, socks... the list is almost endless. I have gotten Espresso fudge each time I have gone back and it is fantastic. Be warned though, they have a lot of cool stuff, but they are also pricey. But that is the price you pay for a niche gift shop with so many cool things. Sadly, I do not really have many photos from inside the store. But I will try and update with some as I go back.
