The previous owners served a wonderful onion soup, rich and cheesy. It Under the current management, the soup was a very poor substitute. I couldn't see any cheese. The server said it was inside. While it was full of onions, there was no cheese inside. He kindly brought me a bit of shaved cheese but that was no substitute for that wonderful layer of browned cheese typically on top of the soup. We needed somewhere that could accommodate a large group of us on a Thursday night (with only a few hours notice) and Hotel du Nord was able to do so. Granted the table was tiny and we had to squeeze 10 people around a table that was meant for 6, but it's Paris so that's to be expected. Also to be expected is slow service, so I'm not going to factor that in to my review. It didn't necessarily take that long for food or drinks to come out once ordered, but it did take a long time to place an order. I had the foie gras as a starter, which was amazing (but living in California where it is illegal and I am foie gras deprived, I always think it's amazing when I can get it) and the Cod as my main. Our starter drink was "spritz", which made us all very happy because it's usually hard to find outside of Italy (in fact, this is the first place that we've been able to find it in Paris). I was debating between the Cod and Seared Ahi, and although the Cod was delicious, I had a bit of food envy when I saw the Tuna come out. i'd definitely get that if I came back. All in all for a starter, main, shared dessert, and lots of wine it was 50 EUR a person, which I think is totally reasonable. Note that they speak English here and even have an English version of the menu, which personally I didn't like about this place, but if you are a tourist might find useful. read more

Came here for drinks with some new friends on my last night in Paris. It's a little out of the way from where I had been spending time but not hard to find. I was with a bunch of people who said they love to drink. I went to the bar and ordered a bourbon on the rocks. When I got back to the group, everyone had a glass of white wine. Ah, Paris. Various bartenders spoke French, English and Spanish well, which was kind of cool. My credit card wouldn't work, and I asked if the issue was that it was American. The waitress kept trying new machines and saying a bunch of stuff in French. When I asked the guy next to me what she was saying, he said, "It's not you, it's me". I knew I could get a French girl to say that to me. Overall, fun times were had. There's a very laid back, Brooklyn-y vibe to this place, and there's a lot of room to stand around drinking outside, which is legal! read more

Yeah, it's good. You'll want to make a reservation in advance as they often fill up. It's a fun atmosphere with a group -- they can rearrange tables for you, it's a big space, and they have a large bar area with a few outside tables. Before or afterwards, you can walk along the canal and enjoy. The food is good, tasty, solid, c'est correct. I'd be back for the atmosphere. I had the duck with lots of snow peas. It was good and the skin was nicely crisped. And the creme brulee. They seem to really like vanilla and put it on a lot of their dishes. read more

I've been here twice with my husband and we really enjoy it. I was surprised by the lower reviews and we asked the owner about them and he said the restaurant was under new management which may explain the previously bad reviews. Our food was delicious and service was really good and polite. Servers all speak English if you're looking for a nice dinner where you don't have to stress about pronouncing everything. Sweet find for a hiptastic, entertaining and delicious experience in Paris. Location: 10th androssiment My dish: grilled snapper with sweet potato puree, but everything I tried was tasty, even the steak with cold noodles, which was interesting. The atmosphere: painstakingly hiptastic french, but in a good way. while the waitstaff spent way more time creating the cool vibe themselves, socializing and hanging out in the front patio, service was still excellent; an impressive balance. the incident: Upon arrival, we sat at the bar, sipping our pre-dinner drinks while watching the waitstaff prepare for mayhem with a disgruntled scooter-rider, who threw a chair at another customer. Bottles where hid behind the curtain of the doorway and a mallet behind the bar just in case the rowdy motorist returned. Meanwhile the servers took shots of Jack Daniels to recover from the commotion and gave the most dramatic re-enactment in french to anyone who cared to listen. Even though most of the words were lost in translation for us, it was nonetheless, amazing. The verdict: go. eat and drink well, absorb any french coolness you can. I love this place. It's more about atmosphere than about the food though - although the food is good. They are very accommodating and will gladly change anything (i.e I wanted just simple grilled fish with salad and no sauce). The staff is always perky and friendly, There is always a great crowd - The wine is always good. Oh - cute garden for those long brunches! I recommend this to friends coming into town and they are always pleased. read more

A very solid choice for dinner in the area, Hotel du Nord is a beautiful restaurant inside that would be good for a special date (especially as it's quite pricey). Food is very good quality, it didn't totally blow me away but I'd recommend if you're in the area although not necessarily to cross town. Went on a rec from a friend for a nice dinner out for my birthday. The seared ahi (recommended by the waiter when we asked) was incredible, the scallops were pretty good, but not the best I've ever had. Ditto on the creme brulee (who knew I would have ho hum creme brulee in paris??) Service was nice and laid back, this is definitely a hipster-friendly working environment. And the vibe was easy going and un-pretentious, reassuring for normal people who want great Parisian food, not a snooty waiter and intimidating menu. Double points for our server knowing the ins and outs of Silencio, the cool baby members only club owned by David Lynch, and recommending a near by friendly pub to have an after dinner drink. read more

How funny, that I haven't reviewed l'Hotel du Nord. Fantastic setting and ambiance, as the other reviewers agree. The food that I ordered wasn't exactly perfect, a confit du carnard with mash that made it a bit dry. But don't let that put you off, my fellow diners all enjoy superb meals, and the wine was fantastic, so I was perhaps just a bit unlucky. It was raining a lot when I came, so didn't get to complete the evening with the canal stroll, but will next time. Recommended. read more

The most romantic walk in Paris might be up in the 11e arronidissement along the Canal Saint Martin. Wander across a couple of the arched bridges between Quai de Jemmapes and Quai de Valmy in the evening twilight and drop in at the Hotel du Nord for a Kir. This bar/restaurant has the cachet of being the current coolest on the canal. The incredibly romantic classic Michel Carné movie was named after the hotel, which was renovated and reopened in 2005. I have tried Hotel du Nord for the second time on Friday night, and I loved it just as the first time! The restaurant is modern/elegant but with a fresh vibe, the beuf bourgignon is really good and the wine list won't let you disapppointed. In the same vein as Derrière, come for the ambiance not the food. I had scallops. They were just okay and the vegetables were uninspired. It is a very nice space inside, complete with bookshelf-lined walls and a cool little bar area in the front. My dining companions seemed to enjoy their duck and lamb, respectively, but it wasn't anything special in the way of food. If I could do it again, I would just order wine and some small plates. read more

located on the bank of the canal saint martin, hotel du nord just rocked my world. lovely parisian environs with original jamel shabazz (wtf) photos mixed in with the paintings on the walls and always great music (the first time i went in they were playing cymande!). i'd attempted to dine here the night before but the rain prevented us from sitting out front and there was a wait to sit inside. i'll be quick about it. gazpacho was bright and fresh, the pureed tomatoes set off with a splay of fresh ground green peppercorns. carpaccio was made with tender, savory paper thin slices of rare steak, shards of parmigiano reggiano, and an arugula so fresh i could almost hear the farmer yelling at this wife. and please don't get me started on the bread. can't quite recall the wine but it worked, and the dessert. oh, the dessert. dark chocolate cake with basil, served with a white sesame ice cream. amazing. there were some other flavors in the mix too, but i think i've given you all the information you need. read more

Me and my boyfriend were staying in the area so we'd though we'd book. The restaurant is beautiful and is situated on the picturesque canal saint martin. The feel pretty is classy but not overwhelmingly so and the food is delicious - by far the best meal I had on our trip to Paris. read more

This place is gorgeous. It has beautiful tiled walls, big wooden tables, stunning original flooring and bags of character. It is very expensive so if you can't afford the pricey food, definitely stop in for a drink. You can sit at the beautiful bar and enjoy the atmosphere whilst playing a game- they have chess and backgammon for customers to use. The HDN salad was spectacular, duck confit to die for, perfectly crispy french frites, asparagus risotto - the memory of which is making me salivate as I write this review. And the creme brule! The interior harkens back to the 1930s, and there's a wonderful atmosphere on weekend nights. Very young and cool and Canal St. Martin but also quite sophisticated, but not in an elitist or exclusive way. Worth a visit and a kir. read more
