Looking out to rolling hills, cows, deer, biplanes, and the storybook-like views you can only find in Switzerland is incredible. And the bed was comfortable. You cannot beat the location. Nestled at the entrance to the medieval city, staying here allows you to both easily walk anywhere in the city and park your car in their lot right by your rooms. No lugging your briefcase over cobblestones to get to your hotel in the medieval city, and no driving to get to the medieval city. And you aren't sacrificing any beautiful architecture staying here - it's a great building. The restaurant is so good! We had a lot of fun with the raclette, and the ice cream and meringue dessert was huge but super fun. If I ever came back to Gruyeres, I would definitely stay here again. We had a great time!

Note that all menus in Gruyeres are extremely identical so good customer service is a great way to set them apart. During our three visits we tried a variety of wines, Cafe Vienna, the beef broth soup, fondue, raclette, meringue and double cream, liqueur soaked cherries with ice cream and double cream and the salad. One dish that set this eatery apart was their version of the Brazilian pan de queso with gruyere stuffed in the center (perfection!). You'll notice that this restaurant takes over two buildings across the street from one another with patio seating as well as indoor (two levels). We really appreciated that they allowed us to share the one serving size of both the fondue and raclette (ordering two portions is not only too much food but pricey as well).

La tour d'Ivoire What a Hotel! My family of 5 (3 kids, and 2…read moreadults) stayed here because we were visiting all of Switzerland and Geneva was our first stop. First of all, it was incredibly convenient being near the SBB train tracks about a two-minute walk from the hotel. check-in was quick, Brian helped us at the desk and spoke fluent English. Our rooms were clean, with a beautifully painted landscape mural on the wall. The bathroom had all the amenities and was also very clean, I told Brian at the front desk that we collect reusable shopping/tote bags from cities we travel to, and by the end of the day, Brian was able to procure one of France and gave it to us free of charge. Also, a 5-minute walk away is a supermarket if you need to purchase anything with a standup pizza food cart in the parking lot as well, I had to go there to buy a cell phone charger outlet adaptor. The store was closed but again, Brian to the rescue with his personal phone charger we borrowed till the next day and going the extra mile by getting us plates and napkins for my family to eat the pizza in the room. The next morning was also grand with the included breakfast with locally acquired cheeses, Fresh bread, Pancakes, cereal, yogurt, pastries some with chocolate, sliced meat(don't know what it was called but delicious)milk, water, juice, and COFFEE. Brian was up early setting up breakfast and I got to talking with him, turns out he's the Owner and is from the U.S. as well, which is a bonus for us since it's our first time in Europe, So he gave us all the tips and do's and dont's of Switzerland and really set our heart at ease which gave us a great start to our trip. The hotel is amazing, the staff makes you feel like Family and not just a visitor.

Stay away! After…read moreprepaying for my "guaranteed for late arrival" room", I arrived at about 9:30 PM to find the place closed and dark. It took me a while to find it because even the outdoor sign was off or missing. It turns out the front desk was located in the lobby of an apartment building - I was able to get in only because a resident let me in. Once in, I found the sign on the front desk which gave a phone number for anyone arriving late. It was difficult/expensive for me to call the number without local phone service, but I did. The first time I called, the rep said "someone will be right there" and put me on hold. After 10 minutes of being on hold and no one showing up, I hung up and redialed. This time they said that I needed to open a safe located near the front desk for my key, and gave me the safe's code. I tried that code at least 10 times, very carefully, but it did not work. I called back and they insisted this was the right number and told me to try again. I tried again but still no luck. I called back and now they would not answer the phone. I called many times, no luck. Another guest arrived and had the same problem. He had also been given a (different) code that did not work. He was also unable to get his key. We both tried calling the hotel customer service many times but they did not answer. I called the company I made the reservation through (Orbitz) and they put me on hold for 15 minutes while they "checked with the hotel". After 15 minutes (and probably $15+) of waiting on hold, the call was disconnected. I called back and explained the situation and said I just wanted a refund. They said unfortunatey they could not provide that without the hotel's approval, and said they would have to call the hotel. I explained how the hotel was no longer picking up the phone and they prmised they would not leave me on hold, but again, I was placed on a 15 minute hold and disconnected. I never did get through to the hotel, nor did I get a refund. Worst hotel experience I've ever had. Save yourself a lot of hassle and go to a hotel that cares about its guests.
