This is the first year Orlando has done our books and I am impressed. My primary concern was thoroughness and that he was. He listed and accounted for every receipt the way I (used to) do it. I felt relieved when I handed him my 'shoebox' of papers and receipts (well, actually it was a crate), and even more so relieved when I saw the detail of the finished product. Frankly, I will admit to certain trust issues, as I have often found in life 'if you want something done right you have to do it yourself' coupled with a case of 'why pay someone else to do something I can do myself'. It is more so true if and when a job not done right will end up costing me more money in the long run in the form of paying higher taxes because everything wasn't included. The highest compliment I can pay Orlando is to say he has cured me of that in handing me a final product that looked like one I would produce, in accounting for every dime in the way I would. I know that I am not alone in the sentiment "why pay someone else to do something I can do myself", especially in this economy. However, I know have two things that I didn't have before I handed my paperwork and receipts to Orlando: peace of mind and my taxes done. Perhaps I have acquired a third lesson in the process: learning how and when to let go. There are many people who will not identify with what I am saying, but perhaps there are some that do. Handing over my 'shoebox' was not necessarily a sign of resignation, but a decision to prioritize my time, lesson my stress level and choose quality of life over a 'To Do' list.
