We spent an afternoon with Adam Guy of I Know a Guy NYC Tours this past August 2025 on a walking tour of Roosevelt Island and Central Park--and it was one of the best decisions we made in New York. From the start, it felt less like booking a tour and more like planning something with a friend who knows all the shortcuts. Adam called right after I'd made our reservation just to get a sense of who we were and what kind of day we were hoping to have. Five minutes into the call, he proposed a small tweak--we'd do Roosevelt Island (which, as it turns out, is eminently walkable) and then hop back across the river to explore the lower half of Central Park. Perfect! Adam is one of those rare guides who feels like he's just hanging out with you--until you realize he's quietly packed the afternoon with layered history, local secrets, well-timed snack stops, and detours that always feel like your idea. He never once looked at notes, yet somehow knew the story behind every building, sculpture, park bench, and waterfront overlook. His sense of pace was spot on--no rush, no filler, just an intuitive read on when to linger, when to pivot, and when to pull over for banana pudding at Magnolia Bakery. The Roosevelt Island tram alone would've been worth the outing. But pairing it with a relaxed wander through Central Park, led by someone who clearly knows and loves the city, made it something else entirely. After taking 2 tours with him now, I feel like I have made a new friend. Adam is the real deal - fun, engaging, personable, kind, and really wants people to enjoy NYC, whether you take a tour with him or not. He has amazing listening and conversation skills, and has a keen sense of being able to make everyone comfortable - from young to old alike. He takes the time to get on the phone with you before you arrive to help plan your tour, including answering questions about planning your trip overall. You can go to his website to pick a general neighborhood to visit, or he'll craft a personalized tour based on your interests. He is able and willing to make last minute pivots during the tour if he knows someone would like to see something that wasn't originally planned. Adam is amazing. He loves the city, wants to share everything about the city and loves getting to know you. I hired Adam for a tour for me and my two young kids (9 and 12yo boys). We originally scheduled it for the day after I was supposed to arrive but United airlines messed up my travel plans and had me arrive 16 hours later on a red eye Argggh. I texted Adam and he was so nice and understanding and suggested we move our your date. We would be zombies if we saw him that day. Adam also suggested a call before we met. We must have spent over an hour together. He tried to find out what we were interested in doing, what we wanted to see, what we might be more excited for etc. he also suggested several itineraries for our tour (take notes!). Before we even met he gave me advice on how to take the subway, which subway train to take, what I should do before seeing him, etc. he really helped us plan our day. When we met he was totally engaging, had a wealth of knowledge, was patient when my boys were rather annoying, found a dessert place, and even helped us buy discounted show tix - he waited with us in line and it was a long line. Adam knows all the clean bathroom spots, he watches over 100 shows so knows them all, will personalize your tour to your liking, and knows all the ins and outs of nyc. We toured in October 2025. I read all of these reviews, and I agree with every single one of them. It was truly a great tour and a great experience. He took the time to explore what we wanted to do, was highly adaptable, and the man practically gave me a 5 day itinerary just in the pre-tour call! But here is another reason why to book a tour: It will make the rest of your trip even. more. enjoyable! Book a tour, get comfortable with the city, get your bearings. This review is to highly recommend Adam Guy of "I Know A Guy NYC Tours". It was the first time my husband, adult daughter, & I had visited NYC. When we travel, we love learning about the history of the area & usually sign up go on a few guided tours. After reading Adam's outstanding online reviews, we decided to sign up for his private tour. I was soon to learn firsthand why people raved about him. A few weeks before we arrived in NYC, Adam called me so we could discuss what we wanted to see & what our plans were during our stay. He wanted to get to know us so he could create a tour around our interests. Adam recommended that we start our vacation with his tour which proved to be great advice. As a senior, I was also concerned about doing too many stairs & Adam took that into account. He also said that I could call/text him if I had any additional questions before the trip. When I hung up the phone I knew we'd made a good choice. On our first full day in NYC we went on Adam's 3 1/2-hour walking tour of Brooklyn Heights, Dumbo, & the Brooklyn Bridge. He met us at our hotel & then led us to the subway. Adam wanted us to learn how to comfortably take the subway around NYC during the rest of our stay. That knowledge proved to be so helpful. As we walked through each neighborhood, Adam shared lots of fascinating current & historical details about what we saw. His stories were educational, often humorous, very memorable, & never boring. The tours the rest of the week made more sense because of the foundation & perspectives he had provided. Can't say enough good things about Adam. Prior to our visit, Adam was in constant touch to gather information to put together a tailor-made tour for us. We set a time and place to meet...he was early, full of energy and enthusiasm and was raring to go. My sister and I have both been to NYC many times but we wanted to do something different than the typical places you can see on your own like the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State building. Adam is not the type of tour guide that just takes you down the street and 'shows you around' by just pointing to things. Adam is a tour guide in every sense of the word. He had the entire day already mapped out. He already knew every place he had planned to take us. We took the subway and after a short walk, we ended up in a neighborhood that was oozing with history, indescribable beauty and breathtaking views of the city. We were amazed at all of the knowledge he had of the area, and of New York City in general. He knew the history and intimate details of buildings and locations...like a walking encyclopedia. How does he know all this stuff!? When it was lunch time, he had timed it so that we would already be in front of several different places to choose from and he was able to offer recommendations. He was understanding, and never in a hurry when my sister and I had to slow down sometimes because we're not as young as we use to be. He was patient while we stopped and took hundreds of pictures. He took pictures of us and, no matter where we were, if he happened to notice other people close by that were trying to take a picture of themselves, he offered to take their picture for them. Adam took us to places that, many New Yorkers may have heard about but, I bet, have never been. Adam also took the time to show us the subway map and tell us which trains we needed to take to get to where we were going the next day. Adam was like a little kid that just saw a giant water slide for the first time ...every place we went, it seemed like it was his first time being there.... it never gets old for him. His excitement was through the roof and contagious and it stayed there the whole time he was with us. You can tell he LOVES to do this! I feel like I've left out so many things but I will not leave out this....even if you've been to NYC before, you should definitely try to spend some time with Adam the next time you go. Chances are, there are places to go and things to see that you didn't even know existed. I can't even put into words, the experience my sister and I had with Adam. If you didn't have the time of your life and memorable experiences on your tour with Adam, you were probably having a bad day....I don't think Adam ever has a bad day. A rare opportunity was recommended to us by a friend who visited NYC before us. We only had 4 nights pre cruise so wanted to make the most of our first stay. We decided to meet Adam our first morning he came to our hotel which removed any stress and the pre visit emails had enabled us to get to know him and for him to tailor the tour to us and our children. We saw so much of Brooklyn and crossed the bridge back into Manhattan aswell as going on the ferry to Roosevelt island and the sky tram back over into Manhattan. Unbelievably we felt fully orientated to the layout of the city and with Adam advising us when and where to go for the things we wanted to do and see for the rest of our stay we really maximised our visit. Adam is so lovely and so passionate about the city and clearly lives his best life in NYC. I can't recommend highly enough his services. if you book a trip with a tourist company you'd only see one or two things but Adam helped us see and do so much more.
