Walking up on it, it seemed like a huge rose-colored Rock sugar sucker. The base is surrounded with flowers and benches to sit near by. It's simple yet beautiful. The little ladies walking by had to stop and touch the glass. It's inviting. I love little artistic surprises that show up in cities and towns as you walk around. Greenville has so many wonderful qualities all over town. I've enjoyed my short visit and look forward to next time.

This version, cast in Florence by the Frilli Gallery and installed in 2011, sits just outside the TD Bank building, slightly more exposed to the elements and foot traffic than its Italian counterpart but no less dignified. The craftsmanship is excellent. The boar's bristled mane, alert ears, and slightly mournful eyes are all rendered with the same expressive detail I remembered from Italy. What makes Greenville's Porcellino especially endearing is its quiet placement. There is no grand pedestal or heavy signage, just the boar, a small fountain, and a grate beneath its mouth where coins can fall if you follow the tradition of placing one on its tongue. It is easy to miss if you are not looking, but that is part of its charm. It feels like a secret nod to those who have wandered the markets of Florence. For those who have never seen the original, this statue stands on its own as a delightful piece of public sculpture. But for those who have, it is a gentle echo of a distant city, a reminder that even across oceans, some traditions and symbols still manage to root themselves in new soil. Spartanburg chose light bulbs to be decorated and spread around the downtown area. There are 28 of these delightful sculpture/paintings. The first one I spotted was "Holiday in Shadowland" by Bailie and it's along Magnolia Street. Figures seem to be running through a candy land around the circumference. It's in great detail. There are others around and the Spartanburg Art Museum has an online guide that points the way. If you're in downtown Spartanburg and looking for a quest, definitely hunt up these lovely lights! It had been forty years since I'd done this and I didn't know what to expect. Back during the CB radio days my friends and I would go on top of Thickety at night and talk directly to people as far away as Tennessee. The Cherokee County road crew has done a remarkable job in servicing the gravel road as it used to be deeply rutted out and dangerous! My views from the top were somewhat diminished as Spring has sprung and the trees are growing leaves. There's a lot of mystery and legend about this place. Back in the day I found an old brick foundation at the base of Thickety Mountain. No one knows it's history or that it even exists. I'm a bit familiar with masonry, and it could certainly be related to the Revolutionary war period. Unfortunately, there's little interest in this find!

Walking around downtown Greenville, you might spot this abstract sculpture with a small caption…read morebelow. It is at the corner of Spring Street and East Washington Avenue. The caption reads, "On his journey from The Liberty Theater in Greenville to the stages of New York City, 'Peg Leg' Bates danced around anything that dared get in his way." And it notes the sculptor is Joseph R. Thompson. The modernistic memorial was unveiled in 2013 and is near the historic Liberty Theater, where Bates was first discovered in 1926. Born in Fountain Inn, South Carolina, Bates lost his leg in a cotton mill accident at age 12 but refused to let his disability define him. His uncle crafted a wooden peg leg, allowing Bates to continue dancing and eventually rise to prominence in vaudeville, Broadway, and television, including multiple appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show. Bates not only broke racial barriers but also founded the Peg Leg Bates Country Club, a resort catering to African American clientele. This is a powerful reminder of Bates' legacy, inspiring future generations with his story of resilience and success. A must-see for those who appreciate history, dance, and the triumph of the human spirit. The statue was Greenville's 62nd piece of public art, further enriching the city's cultural landscape.
