Hands down worst newspaper service ever. I switched to Idaho statesman from a different local paper. I wanted a different opinion and I enjoy the physical paper. They offered me a "deal" on a yearly price. I decided to try for a year. I was shocked when my subscription had an expiration date prior to a year. I called them and they said they "should have been more clear" but I paid for 40 some odd weeks. I then canceled my subscription. I was only getting one paper a week and now it wasn't even a year. They canceled it but then (a week later) I was told there is no refunds. So now I have no paper and I am out over $200! They are misleading and dishonest. The customer service is terrible. So much for trying to support local journalists. This paper is a joke. read more

We quit Statesman as every morning it was like Easter hunting for the paper. I have tried today to get Mondays Statesman and went to three places to buy. None had today's paper. If I could give 0 Stars I would, worst "newspaper" subscription experience ever. We did the 30 day trial and subscribed not knowing what a hassle it would be to cancel.The customer service has got to be among the worst we have ever dealt with, the (outsourced) customer service reps are somewhat friendly, but they have absolutely no clue what they are doing. For a simple cancellation I had to call twice and they STILL DID NOT CANCEL IT, we never received any confirmation, even after their so-called "cancellation date"! If I had trusted them the subscription would have just renewed, what a scam!! I had to find the option to cancel online and that finally took care of it, we are keeping the cancellation confirmation safe in our records because I still would not be surprised if it just renewed anyway... The reason we wanted to cancel in the first place is because their articles (if you can call them that) just plain suck, the content presented is poorly researched and often contains next to no actual information, completely useless. All the 1 Star reviews of the outlet are spot on. Words cannot do justice what a terrible outlet they are. read more

I need someone from the Statesman to contact me. I got a new delivery person a few weeks ago and the service is not good. I live in the Bainbridge subdivision in Meridian. We did not get our Sunday paper this week. The Sunday before the paper showed up sometime in the late afternoon. Our weekly paper is consistently not delivered until after 10:00 am, sometimes later. I cannot get anyone on the phone on the weekend at all. Today I waited on hold for a "representative" for 30 minutes before I gave up. I know that print is dying and that delivery staffing has been an issue. But the price is very high for delivery and there should be a certain level of customer service that we can expect. If I pay for delivery - I expect my paper to be avilaible in the early morning. If there is a problem I just want a human being on the phone that takes care of it. Thanks! read more

I purchased a mail delivery subscription that is supposed to arrive twice weekly. This service has been terrible. When you call to complain, they tell you to look at it online. If I wanted e-subcription only I would have selected that. I've called so many times and filed so many complaints I've lost track! The Statesman is just about to lose one more long-time subscriber. Edit: The response from customer service is a not correct. You cannot cancel an account without reaching out to someone in the McClatchy call center. Trust me, I've been trying for weeks to cancel this crap. I had a digital only subscription. They recently made changes to the website where I get a couple local headlines and a bunch of stories that are trending nationally. In addition to the changes to the content, there are ads on the homepage that cover the content and cannot be closed. I decided to cancel my account because of that and they don't have any options to cancel your account on the website. I tried for weeks to cancel the account. They asked for information that wasn't even on my account profile to verify who I am. They make you jump through hoops to cancel the account and it's a dishonest business practice. Terrible business practice! They had a $1 special for a month, which I ordered. I canceled within the month for the following month and they charged me $15.99. I called to have the charge corrected and returned, and was told they don't refund or return payments. Seriously?! It's not even the $15.99 charge so much as it's their policy of continuing to charge after being canceled. Update: Idaho Statesman contacted me after posting this, and made things right. read more

The Idaho statesman is dead! My 87 year-old mother has been taking the paper for 60+yrs. She goes weeks upon weeks, days upon days, without receiving a paper while still being charged the monthly rate. I finally got fed-up, after numerous calls, with no local response, whatsoever, and e-mailed the Circulation Director(?) at McClalatchy - not a very nice email (c3genclass@mcclatchy.com). My mother hasn't missed a paper since. Recently, she has been getting two papers a day. These dumb-asses don't have a clue! The Idaho Press Tribune from Canyon County(!) delivers her paper ON HER DOORSTEP every morning by 5:00am. (She subscribed to them when she couldn't get the Statesman delivered) smh read more

I've lived in Boise all of my life. My uncles brother had a career at and retired from the statesman in the 1980's I remember the Idaho Statesman as it was, a well read and ethical hometown newspaper. What is has become is a progressive socialist biased mouthpiece for an Idaho that I didn't signup for. The Statesman, owned by a media conglomerate, is a biased mouthpiece for the national liberal progressive socialist agenda. Aside from their bias, their stories are often outdated and anyone with a search engine can get current information from other sources. Their local news coverage is, again, outdated and lacking. I signed up for a year of Sunday newspapers at the Fair last year and did not receive a single Sunday newspaper. After the second week I called and had a Sunday newspaper delivered on Tuesday which as you can guess since I don't have any fish to wrap or birdcage to line was worthless. It went into the trash and after a few weeks of not receiving a paper I contacted my bank to have the charges reversed. A few months later I was contacted by the paper to pay a "handling" charge of 20.00. I begrudgingly paid it to get them off my back. Then this week I started getting some calls from the caller ID Statesman and when I finally answered they informed me of an additional charge of 5.60. They told BBB they would refund our mother's subscription fee but immediately sent us an e-mail that the terms of the subscription state no refund of moneys paid. This subscription was for a 92 year old woman. I'm pretty sure this is the overall ethos of the folks that lead this organization. Taking advantage of my eldery mother. She had he billing on auto pay and made a mistake having a payment sent monthly instead of quarterly. This resulted in an over $500.00 payment. Did they reach out with a call or letter? No. When I found the issue and called they were reluctant to reimburse the overage stating they would stop payment and send the paper for the next 5 years...Mom is in her 80's she needs her money back. Once I got them to agree to send a check I let them know she only wants a Sunday paper which was $7 and change per month which we had auto pay set up through her bank. Next she gets a bill stating she owes over 100.00 for just a couple months. Called again and they said the extra was the online subscription. I let her know we did not agree to that and she was suppose to adjust it...but no. The greedy jerks just sent a demand letter threating colle tions if not paid. Absoulety terrible customer service. Found another local paper who listens and is reasonable with fees. Also there content is much better. Bottom line is there are other better choices than this rag of a paper. read more

Signed up for 6 months subscription. Haven't received paper for 2 weeks. Have made several calls and emails. No response. They received payment for delivery of paper for 6 months. By taking the money and not giving the service they are breaking a contract. Sounds like they have done this to several people. This is fraud!! How can they get away with this? Idaho Statesman, supposedly Idaho's premier paper, cannot manage to get a newspaper consistently delivered to customers willing to pay for delivery service. For $400 a year, delivery customers get no delivered paper, an automated we don't care number to call for delivery problems, customer service in the form of a canned "gee we're sorry" e-mail from the Fresno Bee on behalf of the Idaho Statesman and still no paper. Save your money folks, this newspaper isn't worth 10 cents . Several hours later I received an e-mail from someone named Trish who requested I send contact info to customerservice@mcclatch this is an invalid e-mail address and is indicative of the type of customer service the Statesman is giving their customers. read more

Tuesday or Wednesday I got a call you guy say there noting that said about 2 weeks credit for newspapers. and you also charged us a month. Which I fight it right now you don't offer refund. No Saturday edition and my subscription has gone up. I enjoy some of the comics and do the crossword, word jumble an 7 little words. Open up the paper this morning and dark print, comics almost unreadable and the crossword and jumble are jammed together and 7 little words is now in a tiny space. There really isn't news to read, so I have resorted the other. I will never do business with these folks again. I had a digital subscrition renewable annually which I cancelled last year. I get a $323.00 charge unexepectedly this year. I call and argue that I cancelled previously and am no longer interested. Here's how it goes: We'll submit a request says the agent. No, not acceptable. Let me talk to the decision maker. No, not permitted, we only communicate by email. Okay, give me the email address. No, not permitted to do that either. Well, I'm not paying for a subscription I didn't order. Can you tell me whether your will or not credit my account? No, I don't know. I then get a sales call from the Statesman to renew my previous subcription -- unbelievable. Thankfully, the charge was on my business Amex card. I submit a dispute with Amex. The newspaper never responds to their inquiry. I am finally credited back my $323.00. Dishonest business practices are not okay. I've practiced law for 33 years - I'm now inspired to do consumer protection law as a "retirement career". read more

I called and left a message for the editor of someone of his choosing to call me. No response. my theory is they don't want to do print anymore but what is happening is that when subscriptions run out we won't renew. My family or I have subscribed for over 60 years. Currently, printed Sunday edition and digital for other days. Last six months without Sunday printed paper. Customer Service at 208-377-6370 has an auto attendant but no live person. Yes, I can read digital but I paid for home delivery. Idaho Statesman has a "NO REFUND" policy. I.e. you buy, we keep your money even if we do not deliver. A Greg White at 208-377-6390 is the distribution manager who does not return calls. Call and see if you get a return call. Dropped to six days a week,closed Boise office, moved printing to Twin Falls, paper is vastly smaller than it used to be, customer service is apparently iin India , 15 monutes to get through computer responses,took additional time to speak with supervisor, now they want to charge $2.99 for the privilege of them sending a bill through the mail ! Paper is absolutely worthless, all that they want is to pay them and then force you to use website for "E edition". Obviously I'm not happy with all the changes. And don't get me started aboutthe haphazard delivery,if it gets delivered at all ! I have internet access and don't need the Statesman to require that I pay them to read an increasingly small, irrelevant attempt to try and convince me they are local, and that they really care. I have tried to have my paper (costing more than $100 per month) delivered in readable form since 1976, and it comes in a plastic bag in the gutter, on the concrete, on the lawn, just ANYWHERE IT WILL GET WET. Today it is as wet as it will hold no more water! I have a "Idaho Statesman" box on my mail box stand where it will be dry. Do you think it would be possible to have it delivered there??? We subscribed for 1 year. When the paper was not delivered/late, we called and their automated service said we'd be "credited". 20 days before the end of the subscription, we renewed over the phone, using a credit card. But the delivery got so spotty, and they failed to suspend when we went on a short trip, that I called to cancel. The customer service call center sounds like the Philippines, so it was hard to understand the rep, who tried to hard-sell me into staying. I insisted, and she said "a refund check will arrive within 5-7 business days". Well, nothing arrived, and I called, and the rep said that my payment "failed" and was never processed. I checked my bank statement, and it cleared, and my bank rep and I both called the outsourced customer service line (that's all Idaho Statesman offers with billing issues!). The rep said that she could not send our bank any e-mail confirmation of the payment failure, but it was referred to the "financial department" which will take 7-10 business days. My bank rep and I got off the phone and we submitted a Visa dispute form. On top of this, the original e-mail I sent to customer service (at the request of the overseas rep) included a screenshot of my bank statement charge, and "Janet" (no last name) replied that "the payment failed" and that I in fact OWED $7.91 since the subscription expires Jan 20! If anything, Idaho Statesman owes ME that amount, since I had not received the paper since Jan 20, and my original prepaid subscription ran until Jan 27. So not only did they NOT credit my account for all those missing papers, but they are saying I OWE them money, when the reverse is true, and they are confusing my cancellation date (Jan 19) with the expiration date of my original subscription! The Idaho Statesman has made a serious mistake farming out their billing department like this; the overseas reps, though nice, do not have accurate information, they hard-sell renewals, and have no power or authority to resolve disputes, but refer them to some mysterious "financial department" we cannot contact directly. They confuse the cancellation date with the date of expiration, say you owe money when they owe you, and say they didn't receive a payment, when my bank says it cleared! I even went on their website contact list, and they do not have anybody over there locally in charge of the billing department; you are told to contact their overseas call center. Terrible, esp. when they keep making mistakes. Finally, one of the main reasons we cancelled was the lack of news value. They never fail to include a full 4 pages of sports, while lately, they are doing away with important "letters to the editor", and a disappearing Saturday paper. I've written to them about their spotty inclusion of Carolyn Hax, and how online they don't even have her articles archived up to the month (with zero response). Also, for some reason, they constantly print the divisive and inflammatory op-eds of Eugene Robinson and Leonard Pitts Jr., both living in very urban liberal areas in America, in an almost blatant propaganda attempt to undo the values which make Boise a nice place to live. Also, huge puff pieces on the BSU president (and nothing about BSU researchers/professors) and the hagiography of education bureaucrats (over any critical analysis of how we can get more teachers instead of throwing money at them) is disappointing. I have written to a couple writers over there, with again, zero response. Stay away from this toxic paper. There are some good reporters, but it's not worth the billing hassle and the rest of the fluff and propaganda. read more
