When in Oxford go punting! During the final days of my trip to Oxford I had a difficult decision to…read morego to London or enjoy the afternoon in Oxford. Going punting was a great choice! In the beginning, my group was split in to 2 boats. Both punting boats had trouble staying straight. That's what he said. The boating system relies on a long stick pushing on the floor of the canal. Think of a gondola only with out the singing. The difficulty is using the pole to steer the boat. Against your instincts you must steer the tale in the direction you want to go and not the way you think it will go. Let's just say one boat was going in circles and the boat house owner didn't look amused. I got suck in a tree trying to avoid the other group boats. A tip don't fight the water let the water take you. Push it real good! We had some vary embarrassing moments captured on photos and instagram but it added to the fun on the experience. It was great for team building and nobody fell in. When all desperation was high and hope was lost. We pushed forward because our goal was to find a place to get drinks. The one person with some boat knowledge and paid attention during the punting instructions became our leader. We did get 2 large Pimms pitchers once we reached our destination. So worth it! Don't worry I was a designated punter so I didn't drink too much. Surprisingly after drinking and relaxing punting is a lot easier. Despite embarrassment we all had a great laugh and memorable stories to tell of our adventure. I highly recommend punting with friends if weather permits.

This is a must-do activity when in Oxford and I cannot recommend it enough!…read more Punting has a long tradition in Oxford and this boathouse has been connected to Magdalen college since its conception. This gives the place a rich history, and it can be seen as you travel along the river. this is actually the second time I have gone punting at this place this year, and both times we have had a wonderful experience. The staff at the boathouse are all very busy but always friendly and approachable. There is a high turnover of people getting in and off boats, but there is never the feeling that we are cattle being moved around and having money taken form us. There is still a personal element to it which is very nice. The owner of the boathouse has been working both days I have been, and he is an incredibly friendly man who recommended buying champagne and strawberries to enjoy the punting more. On the second time of punting he actually remembered us. This is a subtle yet very important point as he must see hundreds of customers a day but he remembered me 3 months later. That was a very nice touch. For those interested in punting, you have two options: Sit back and enjoy your own guide to punt you and your friends/significant other around the scenery. OR Punt yourself! We chose the second option and had such a fun time! I obviously was amazing at punting being a sort of veteran by now, but others just couldn't seem to nail the technique. Both outcomes led to a very relaxing float down the river in the figure of 8 loop mapped out. If it is sunny, and you want to treat yourselves to an hour or two of champagne and relaxation, come down here and get on the river!

It seems pretty unspoilt and natural, although it can get pretty busy in summer. It's best first thing in the morning or just before dusk, when the sun can be seen rising or setting over the countryside or the magnificent backdrop of Christ Church. The Cherwell and Isis surround it and there's no better way to spend a summer day in Oxford than to take a picnic and laze around by the river in the sun watching the cows graze. There are various rules, such as no bikes, which adds to the tranquility, but also serves as a reminder that this isn't actually a piece of wilderness, but a controlled tourist area in Oxford. Still, the rules seem sensible and considerate towards the wildlife. I'm really grateful the college hasn't tried to commercialise the meadow at all. You can access the meadow through the Memorial Garden on St Aldates, a gate next to the Botanic Gardens or a gate between Merton and Corpus Christi on Meron Lane. Make sure you don't get locked in after sunset!

Refresh yourself and gird your loins at the 'Head of the River', then take a leisurely stroll through Christchurch Meadow It's beautiful, quiet, and completely unspoilt by the city around it. Take a loved one, sit on the grass and just watch the world go by. The perfect summer day, and the perfect place to sit and escape the daily grind. Lovely.

So try avoid coming here during these hours. The curly fries (£3) with bacon and cheese (£0.75 extra for each) is one of best choice of "to-share" food at the club. Burger could be dry/over-cooked depend on luck. I tried their pork belly udon for the first time today. I was expecting udon in soup however this is udon with sauce. Definitely good flavour and nice pork belly. Tho it does start to get salty by the end. All in all I'd say still a great dish for value tho! Great portion size as well!

It's been around for nearly a century and really knows its stuff, which isn't to say it's necesarily the best, but the staff are knowledgeable and polite, the items are of good quality, and the prices, while not cheap, aren't extortionate. It caters for non-university teams as well, with items ranging from basic t-shirts to embroidered uniforms. You pick the material (eg: Nike), the sizes and the design, or you can specify a bespoke design if it's not one they already cater for. The shop's got a nice feel to it - not too cluttered, and it feels sort of vintage and English, with photos of cricket teams on the walls.

If you follow the meadow path round anti-clockwise, you will soon come to the Fellows' Garden…read more Cross a quaint little bridge, which is somewhat spoilt by the noticeable CCTV camera and signs, and you're in a lovely area of unusual plants, tame ducks, moorhens, coots and all manner of garden birds. The first plants were placed by Thomas Hopkins, Bursar of Magdalen, who also helped design the University Parks. There are still some trees surviving from this time, such as the huge redwoods, a poplar, a copper beech and a silver lime. Keep an eye out for fritillaries (pink flowers with a snake-scale pattern on their petals) and for the dog's tooth violets. The best time to visit is Spring, as there are lots of spring-flowering plants. That said, in summer the trees provide pleasant shade and in winter the frost and snow can make everything look exceedingly beautiful. This might not be so interesting for older children, but toddlers will like the tame birds, and it's a great place for a romantic stroll, a catch-up with an old friend or a walk with relatives. I actually like going here on my own at quieter times, as it gives me a chance to take everything in and to get my thoughts together.

As a climber in Oxford, I was excited to learn that the university has its own bouldering wall…read more However, 'Iffley', as it is fondly known, is one which you will either love or hate. Unlike most modern walls, which have screw-on or bolted resin holds, Iffley is a brick wall with inserts of what feels like real rock, postioned in numbered tiles along the wall. It's 2-3 metres high, so is for bouldering only, but you need to provide your own mats for safe landing. Only members of the University Mountaineering Club are allowed to use the wall, and they have access to some club mats, but if you're not a member, it's still good fun to go and watch people doing bizarre gymnastic moves on teeny holds. The holds are numbered and there's a guidebook with graded problems, which consist of sequences of numbers. These range from traverses to awkward sit-starts, to dynos and even more inventive moves involving the roof beams and nearby door frames! The holds are rather unusual, including some metal bits and some vital chips in the brickwork. Don't even think of trying to smear, as the wall is polished to death. The place has a great atmosphere if there are a few people down there, and it overlooks the hall where hardy people can be seen waving martial arts sticks around or performing aerial stunts on trampolines. The main problem is that the wall is simply the wall of a corridor, so climbers and other sports centre users can get in each others' way. It can be quite awkward to watch climbers, but there's often a Pilates ball or a pile of gym mats to sit on. A very different experience from climbing at Brookes and well worth a go if you're a member, or a look if you're not. Before you turn your nose up at it, just remember that Johnny Dawes has climbed here.
