Smartsville is a teeny tiny blimp of a current township in the Sierra Nevada foothills. The…read morepopulation has long dwindled since its heyday in the Gold Rush era. In the township is the old Church of the Immaculate Conception. The church is one of the oldest Gold Rush churches still standing... standing barely that is. The original church was built in 1850. Fire destroyed it in 1870. It was rebuilt in 1871. Back then the church served nearly 800 parishioners mainly Irish Catholics. Mostly miners and their families. The church is shuttered and undergoing local restoration mainly from volunteers and donations. The church was in operation through to the 1970s. Behind the church is a flowing stream. Next to the church is a beautiful redwood. It was planted in 1919 to honor a local young man that died while serving our county in WWI. For many years after, the tree served as the community Christmas tree. There are local memorials around the tree. Beautiful and simple serene area. Additional fundraising effort and donation information can be viewed at Www.smartsvillechurchrestoration.org Wonderful that they are making efforts to restore. This place is not much to look at and may not warrant a drive up just to see this... But if you are nearby and enjoy history, check this place out. Imagine a bygone era.
