First time at this place; have been wanting to attend a first Friday's glassblowing demonstration (Free event!) for sometime. It's a very cool set up with indoor and outdoor space and bleacher seats set up to watch the glassblowing demonstrations. They had little glass blown objects for sale as well as food and drink for purchase. Raffles throughout the evening coupled with ping-pong table, and Jenga set if you wanted to take a break from the demonstration. Really informative and fun to watch. Also enjoyed walking through the gallery afterwards. If I could be a collector, it would be for these items.

Amazing Place to come out to watch Glass Blowing Demonstrations. I also admire and have respect that Ignite Studios provides a tuition free glass art education around Chicago to youth ages 12-19. It is a great opportunity for youths to explore and have a creative mindset on Art. This is a diverse program that allows the youth to interact and participate of learning how to Team Build. The Glass Blowing Event on yesterday was awesome. I enjoyed watching how the youth came together to create a Holiday Masterpiece. Great Team Building and Social Skills. One of the parents had a snack table set up for Holiday Snacks which were amazing. Complimentary Coffee, Juice and Hot Chocolate. The glass pieces are made uniquely different in there own way. There is even a deal on Groupon that you can purchase to come and take a class for a drinking glass. If you are interesting in coming out to watch a free glass demonstration go on Eventbrite for dates and time. You can even rent out a space for weddings or other events. Very nice location.

Very cool hidden gem in Chicago that offers classes for glass-making. The studio space has some awesome pieces (look for the French bulldog and anglerfish) and is available as an event space. Ignite is proactive about supporting Chicago area charities. Highly recommend!

    This one came out nicely!

I was really excited to do a glass blowing 1-hour class here. Overall, it's a very nice studio, but the class was a lot more hands off than we expected, especially for how expensive it was. We had 1 item come out great and another come out pretty poorly. This studio also charged us for asking to change our class date (we asked several days in advance).

Our instructor Alan was fantastic! We could not have asked for a better coach to make some glass with! The facility is very clean and well kept. The instructions are clear and it's fun and easy! Considering that we had no experience with glass blowing, I felt that we got to do a lot of hands on things. This is a great date night or just a very fun and memorable experience!

Very cool place, very nice people, very hot glory holes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kjtr35bKaWI I came here with my Valentine for Ignite's "date night" special that included making small glass hearts while enjoying sparkling wine and chocolates. We saw this promo mentioned on the news leading up to V day, and it sounded fun... The front lobby has a range of fine glassware for purchase (paperweights, vases, glass art), and the back area includes a large space where they can host private events, accommodate tables, bleachers, etc. - and of course, there's a glass studio. This is an impressive work space with all kinds of tools, benches/tables, and gigantic crazy-hot furnaces / kilns where the glass is heated. The back area was all decked out for V day, so it was very festive for our group. We sipped some wine and enjoyed some chocolate prior to making our hearts and also spoke with several employees about Ignite and our interests, what brought us there, etc. Every single staff member we met was super friendly and down to earth. The instructors were guiding us, hands on, step-by-step so even though we had no clue what we were doing, we felt comfortable. Ignite has a range of classes and workshops all year round, so if you're looking for something different to try out, I say go for it! We had a lot of fun.

We had a private event here tonight with a DJ, photographers, catering, open bar and photo booth. Very nice venue. Staff was super friendly. They have tons of glass blown artwork and it's all for sale. Simple stuff from $10 to some very meticulously designed stuff for a few Thousand. Price versus what you where getting seemed reasonable at all price points. I picked up a paper weight for my new office and a Decanter. I wanted a top for the decanter however, it didn't come with one. Alex, one of the artist went down stairs and made one for me. It was truly custom because, I made a few changes. All this for under $100. This place is AMAZING!

The studio is a bit small but and enough space for you to roam about and do your thing. The first step was to handle the clay then they thought us how to handle the wheel and then we got to choose if we wanted a vase, a cup or a bowl. We were in a small group of 6 due to which the teachers could explain and help us well. We ended up upgrading our class to include paint as well as we got to know that without the paint we won't be able to use the things we made of it involves water. My friend made a cute cup and I made a not so cute vase. I would definitely say that but the end of the class, we were rushing a bit and would have appreciated some help and tips from the teachers but we didn't get any. We had to constantly ask about things and where the brushes were and where the paints were. Since it was our first ever class, we would have appreciated a bit more help from the teachers in managing our time and helpful tips on how to glaze correctly instead of having to ask everything ourselves when we are already rushing. Regardless, we had a lot of fun and can't wait to pick up our pieces soon!

At some point I decided that Marwen must be the corporate headquarters of some outdoorsy clothing brand because the name reminded me of Erehwon, the mountain outfitter. Well, mountain outfitter it's not; this is what Marwen is all about (from their website): "Marwen was founded to provide Chicago's youth with stimulating and diverse opportunities to channel their adolescent energy into personally rewarding and developmentally appropriate outlets. Chicago is a city rich in history, architecture, art, and culture, and it is Marwen's intent to leverage these resources, providing our students with an out-of-school program that provides access to opportunity, while remaining highly relevant to their individual and collective experiences." The fabulous Kelly S told me about "Show Me Marwen" which gave me a chance to check the place out, for free to boot! The event was really cool, but a little crowded. I liked that they asked attendees to not only wear name tags, but add color-coded stickers to show how they were affiliated with Marwen (student, alumni, parent, friend, etc.), it really gave it a community feel. The alumni and student artwork on display was amazing and ranged from photographs to paintings to pottery to claymation videos. I was in awe of all of the creativity in the room. The only downside was that when I left Marwen I felt about as creative as a cucumber.

No admission, and easily viewed in less than an hour, it seems that every student had one piece indicative of their style (no artists' statements to be found) on the walls. Most of the art is available for sale and reasonably priced; pieces seemed to range from $100 to $800, with instructor pieces or really large works coming in in the $1000 to $1500 range. There are a variety of styles to enjoy and absolutely no pressure to buy. The instructors included this year are Robert Brasher, Grace Cole, Tom Francesconi, Didiet Nolet, Phil Renaud, and Illinois Artist Laureate Kay Smith. I had the pleasure of attending the opening reception on Sunday (apologies for not yelping it in advance!) and the artists, teachers, and patrons were all accessible, friendly people. They ran the event themselves but the food and drink assortment was nicely balanced -- wine, cheese, crudites, sweets, and non-alcoholic drinks -- and the live harpist set a wonderful tone. I would encourage everyone to go this June if they have the time or are strolling around the neighborhood. Who knows if any of these artists are up and coming stars -- but the art itself is truly enjoyable, and that's the important part.

However, I had always been curious about wheelthrowing and wanted to finally learn about it, so I registered too! We both registered for a 10-week class that met once a week in the weekend. It had been a fun 10 weeks! Well, we had missed 2 classes for our unexpected trip to Europe, but we were fortunate that we could make up work by going to "open studios" that are available only to current students. Our teacher Jen FitzGerald has 25 years of experience in ceramics. Both Jen and the class assistant, Kim, are very kind, welcoming, and encouraging. Jen always has solutions to whatever problems that we might have. After she made a demonstration throwing on the wheel, she would go around the classroom to see how everybody was doing with her own work. It was especially helpful during the first couple of classes that Jen came by me and helped me one-on-one to overcome the hurdles that I had. After I "mastered" the techniques, wheelthrowing is relaxing and fun. Glazing pottery has been a lot of fun too! Looking for our fired glazed work on the common shelves is like Christmas! There have been nice surprises of how the glazed work turned out! Now both Daughter and I have made a bunch of cups, mugs, and bowls that we are proud of. Like a lot of the students at Lillstreet, our passion for ceramics have been ignited, this class won't be the last! Lillstreet Art Center not only offers a lot of different art classes for all levels, it also hosts private events like birthday parties, and one-time workshops that you can test the water and have some fun. There is a gallery/gift shop that features a lot of one-of-a-kind creations from teachers and students, most are really sophisticated and professional, and inspirational too! There is a small café that you can enjoy local baked goods. We had tried the almond croissants which were very good. Our teacher Jen is having a Lounge Show "Mudweaver Ceramics" in the cafe, from November 1 to 30, 2024. The show showcases some very amazing ceramic art that looks like woven baskets! Come see the show if you can! Closing reception is on Friday, November 29 at 6:00 PM.
