Great service, reasonable price and portion; great flavor profile. Kebab and nan are delicious. Clean dining areas and restrooms.

The bun maska was perfectly drenched in butter, and the chai was hot and comforting. The chili chicken was also really flavorful with the perfect spice level. For our mains, we got the Ruby Chicken and House Black Dal with garlic naan, chili paratha, and a side of plain rice. The Ruby Chicken had a delicious tomato gravy, and the chicken pieces were really soft. The dal was thick and creamy. Everything paired together so well. Beyond the food, the restaurant itself was beautiful, with a Bombay-inspired atmosphere. There's seating both upstairs and downstairs, and while we didn't have any issues, I've heard there can be long wait times. Our server was friendly, although the service felt a little sloppy at times. They also surprised us with complimentary champagne since we were celebrating a special occasion, which was really nice. I found the portions to be a little smaller, and it's definitely on the pricier side, but I think it's worth the splurge. If you're visiting the UK, I'd definitely recommend checking out Dishoom!

And the service is attentive. It's a beautiful thing to witness, even better to experience. My Negroni order was sent to the bar while my server and I chatted about what I might like. So efficient. I ended up ordering a couple of small plates. A spicy lamb dish and a hot/cold combo of yogurt and mashed hot veggies. Rather quickly my drink was served and a short while later my food appeared. Those small plates were not so small! Loads of food for one, perfect starters for two. Finished with a house chai - delicious!

Amidst the tapestry of Edinburgh's evening sky, where shadows dance upon the wall, one finds Omar Khayyam, a culinary oasis. Whilst outside, on this chilly late January day, trams and North Face bejacketed locals and tourists pass by, the interior of Omar Khayyam remains cozy and vibrant, its warm colors and soft lighting casting a spell of comfort and tranquility. As we sit amidst this welcoming ambiance, surrounded by the tantalizing aromas of exotic spices and the gentle hum and laughter of conversation, we find ourselves transported to a realm far removed from the mundane world beyond the threshold. Here, the boundaries of time and space blur, leaving only the pure, unbridled joy of discovery. On that chilly Saturday evening, Lady Veedenfleece and I were seated immediately by the professional and attentive staff and our drink order arrived quickly. Beneath the purple glow of the twinkling ceiling lighting, Lady Lauren and I relaxed in plush black leather chairs, a candle casting a warm reflection that gleamed across the dark wood table. We politely declined the offer of pickles and went straight to our entree choices. My Pravha draught arrived rapidly and was ice cold. Music of the Indian region played as other diners chatted, the sounds echoing off the stone and other hard surfaces, adding to the lively ambiance yet not reaching a level one could call shrill. The entrees came with a salad consisting of a slice of cucumber, sliced onions, a lemon slice, and various greens in a quantity that did not overwhelm; a verdant surprise nestled within the folds of the main course. Featuring prominently, a majestic naan, born of ancient fire and modern art, rose like a phoenix. Crisp yet yielding, its golden crust embraced the gentle curve of a perfectly seasoned arc in a size that rivaled the brim of my Faustmann Fedora. Flaky layers unfold, releasing whispers of cardamom and cumin, carried aloft by wispy tendrils of fragrant steam. A symphony of textures, a harmony of aromas, this mighty naan stood sentinel, guarding the gates of gastronomic nirvana. And thus we arrived at the sauce accompanying the chicken tikka, like a sunrise breaking over the horizon, it painted the plate with hues of gold and orange, bathing the senses in a warm, inviting aura. Its creamy texture, born of ancient traditions and mystic spices, tantalized the taste buds, drawing forth the hidden depths of the dish. The sauce was, simply, the elixir of the gods, distilled into liquid gold. Its silky texture, like the first blush of dawn, coated the tongue with promise. Light, yet rich, it danced on the palate, leaving trails of delight in its wake. Lady Lauren's lamb rogan josh reigned supreme, its tender flesh infused with the subtle nuances of Kashmiri spices. The Pravha lager provided a piquant counterpoint to the meal. With each sip of the Pravha, the bitterness cut through the rich tapestry of spices, refreshing the palate and awakening the senses. Like a splash of cool water on a sweltering summer day, the beer revitalized and rejuvenated, ensuring that every bite of the rogan josh was savored anew. And finally, the pièce de résistance arrived in the form of a mango lassi, its sweet and creamy essence mingling with the lingering spices of the preceding feast. Like a gentle breeze on a summer afternoon, the lassi soothed and satiated, providing a satisfying conclusion to the culinary odyssey. And so, as we concluded our epicurean journey, a steaming hot towel, fragrant with aromatic oils, was presented before us. With gentle strokes, we wiped our hands clean, erasing the residue of our indulgence and leaving our skin refreshed and invigorated. And a final delight came with the check, a fine chocolate mint that sweetened the transaction. In conclusion, Lord and Lady Veedenfleece bestow upon Omar Khayyam a resounding endorsement. With its rich tapestry of Indian spices, elegant service, and cozy ambiance, this Edinburgh gem promises an unforgettable dining experience. Seek it out, dear travelers, and indulge in a culinary odyssey fit for royalty.

Coming from the same region myself, I naturally connect with Nepalese food and am always eager to try authentic dishes whenever I get the chance... Seems, it is very popular, and The Khukuri has been an Edinburgh favorite for almost twenty years Nepalese food is often considered a combination of ingredients, flavors and cooking styles of a variety of cultures, including India. We ordered- Momo Jhol: never leave a chance to have momo at an authentic Nepalese joint. And it did not disappoint after all - 4/5 * Chicken Sekuwa: but it did. I know what sekuwa is, and it was far from that. Ofcourse I asked the serverbut the response was the usual, that We've adapted it to suit local tastes.- 2/5 * Lamb Biryani: not the biryani you guys would expect, it's more of lamb curry with rice Ofcourse, I was expecting more in terms of food taste, but overall owner's warmth, quick service, and even every server is there to help you, doesn't matter that table belongs to him/her or not Feel like home Food - 3/5 Overall - 4/5

We had finally narrowed it down to Indian food but we still couldn't choose a restaurant. I'll be honest my vote was for a different restaurant so I wasn't too excited about going to the place I didn't choose. I know I was being a brat but this review gets better. Because I came in wanted to prove that my choice would have been better (again so bratty). When we walked in everyone working was so nice and friendly they immediately melted my anger away. I ordered the mango lassi to drink and for my entree I got the paneer marsala. Both items were delicious. I do wish I could have controlled the spice a bit more but that could have been on me and I may have misunderstood. This restaurant wasn't the cleanest, it wasn't gross by any means it just seemed like they were short on staff and didn't have time to clean the bathrooms that day. All in all I really came around and had to eat my own words Zest was delicious and I am very glad I lost!!!

We of course started checking out the menu which had a number of options. We started with appetizers which we get a number of. We went with the Lovely Garlic Mushrooms, Sabzi Samosa, Chicken Pakora, and the Himalayan Crushed Chilli Chicken which is an entrée but it sounded good so we got it for the table. All the appetizers were good but what really stuck out to me what the Chicken Pakora, and the Himalayan Crushed Chilli Chicken. I had never had Chicken Pakora but it was great. They were perfectly fried so crispy and the batter had so much flavor. Will for sure be getting me Chicken Pakora in the future. The Himalayan Crushed Chilli Chicken was also very good. I will say this is not like the fried Chilli Chicken I have had at other Indian restaurants but this was full of amazing flavor. It's also marked as a Hot dish but it wasn't over powering at all. For my entrée I will say I ended up going pretty basic and went with Chicken Tikka Massalam but it was just calling my name that night. I comes mild but asked if I could get it hot. Our server did look at me like I was crazy but he said they would give it a try. I will say the rest of our party was a little more adventurous. Once my Chicken Tikka Massalam came out I got into it and it was very good. My sister got the Korma with Chicken (at least that's what she ordered) but she was given Korma with Lamb. I tried hers and I liked it even more then my Tikka and she loved my Tikka she we traded. I'm glad I did too. The Lamb so so tender for sure will be doing this more too.I will say we were a little nervous at Zest when first ordering but after our meal everyone talked about how much we enjoyed everything. For sure a good spot for Indian!
