My mum and I had dinner here on Sunday at 5pm. There were two other tables (with two diners at each table).
We asked if we could substitute the roasted chat potatoes for the chips (which were also on the menu - as a side as well as an accompaniment to other meals). We were told they can only remove something from a meal but can't substitute/swap anything because they get very busy and their chef can't handle any variation from the meal description as it appears on the menu. I appreciate that these requests might be difficult when you've got a full house, but it was surprising our request couldn't be accommodated when the cafe was near empty (plus surely the substitution of an ingredient - for something of equal price - is no more challenging to execute than the removal of one?). I feel like they should've had more faith in their chef's ability. Yet, maybe this is the norm for Italian cafes in Melbourne... although it's unheard of in Adelaide. A potato one way for a potato another way...? At $38 per main meal (when we'd already each spent twice that much each on starters and drinks), it was a little disappointing.
I requested my eye fillet medium-rare - it was cooked medium to well done. Mum's salmon was also over-cooked. Our waitress didn't ask how our meals were when she took away our plates.
A positive - they weren't stingy when it came to portion sizes - both the eye fillet and salmon were generously cut.
We were asked if we'd finished our meals twice while we still had knife and fork in hand. Again, I understand the desire to get diners in and out the door as fast as possible during busy periods but this wasn't a busy period.
When we were asked about dessert (which we both wanted) we declined and found a more relaxed cafe to indulge our sweet tooth. This place has A LOT of potential (great location, good/family friendly menu). That said I get the impression that, given it's in such a prime (high-traffic) location, they might not have much interest in providing (or feel the need to provide) the type of customer service you'd expect elsewhere for the $$.
The elderly couple that arrived halfway through our mains was directed to a table in very low light. The gentleman asked if they could be seated at a table in better light so he could see what he was ordering and eating. This request also seemed to cause a little irritation (though, to the cafe's credit, was met).
I'm glad we weren't dining with my dad and brother (who have food intolerances) because I don't think this cafe would be willing to cater (and, even if they were willing, I think their comment that it's "too hard" for their chef to accomodate any changes would mean they wouldn't have risked it).
I've written a rather critical review but that's because I think there are some very small changes this cafe/restaurant can make to improve their patrons' dining experience significantly. Maybe they don't need to focus on that given they get the necessary numbers through the door, but maybe they just haven't thought about the extra value they can give to (and appreciation they'll receive from) their customers with a few relatively minor improvements. read more
