The kitchen exhibits that ability peculiar to great Italian cooking of transforming good fresh ingredients in relatively simple recipes into exquisite dishes. We dined there twice recently, a dinner and a lunch. Both were extraordinary experiences. Two risotoo dishes in particular stand out : a porchini risotto and risotto Milanese with its saffon infusion; both were about as good as I have tasted anywhere. Pasta dishes and a preparation of a local lake fish were also perfectly seasoned and tasty. And both of the local wines that was recommended turned out to be delicious and well-matched to our dishes. But what elevates this epicurian experience above and beyond is the restuarant's location and thus its spendid vistas. Dining on the patio one sits high on a hilltop overlooking the lake, affording the diner with a majestic panorama. The candlelit table, the exquisite food, the wonderful wine and the splendor of Lake Como all around; as a romantic experience, it would be hard to beat. Getting to the restaurant, you should be aware, will generally require a car or a taxi. For our lunch we did walk up the hill. Walking takes around 20 minutes and the walk is up some moderately steep roads that are not pedestrian-friendly, so it would not be adviseable to walk it at night.

The restaraunt itself is rustic and the staff is friendly. The food is very yummy. I had the best prosciutto I have ever had and very good bufala mozzarella. One if us at the tomatoe sauce pasta and the other the pork loin stuffed with herbs and cheese. Yuuumy!!!! We were really full after our dinner and unfortunately did not go for dessert. The ambience is rustic and they had a fire going in their fireplace. The restaraunt is small and doesn't sit that many people. We were surprised that even tho there weren't too many people the service was relatively slow. Lastly, this restaurant is expensive. Portions are small for their price. But it's a really nice experience.

Risotto flavor was good but the texture was a bit hard for my taste. It was different from the one I had in Venice. I don't know which one is authentic but I don't really like the texture of this one. Lake fish sampler also great on seasoning but then again some fishes have small bones which I didn't like. But this place lived beyond its expectations. We sat outside in their beautiful courtyard, we didn't order a wine pairing, but the sommelier was there to help some people in my group order glasses to pair with their dishes, and the service was fantastic. They also had some of the best bread that I had throughout our 2 weeks in Italy. We ordered the shrimp risotto, the tagliolini, the pigeon, the lobster, and the peach and berry dessert. The shrimp risotto was absolutely fantastic--this is a MUST order. The tagliolini was great, but the olives they used were quite bitter. Nevertheless, my fiancée loved it. The lobster was the same way--delicious. The pigeon was also lovely--reminded me of duck. The highlight was definitely the dessert though. I don't remember the name, but came with a berry sauce, cardamom ice cream, and a fruit medley. For something so seemingly simple, it was delicious, fresh, and the perfect ending to a meal. Overall, I hope I get to return to Lake Como one day so I can eat here again.

There was a whole menu but was told there's only a few items available. It even gave the impression that she assumed we couldn't afford the restaurant, which was uncomfortable, especially when she stands there and STARE at your table while you dine. What made the experience worse was watching her check on the other tables with a warm, friendly tone while treating us very differently and cold. The contrast was noticeable and made us feel unwelcome. As for the food, we ordered a bottle of water because we had our own personal water bottles and was told we're not allowed to drink it there, we ordered three buttered pasta dishes for the kids (which were actually the best items we had on the menu, ravioli, which was disappointing, and the salted cod. While I understand it's supposed to be salty, both the cod and the red sauce were overwhelmingly salty to the point that it affected the dish. Sadly, because of the poor hospitality, we would not return. Good service should make every guest feel welcome, regardless of whether they're ordering a light meal or a full dinner. I ordered Grilled octopus, Burrata with tomatoes for appetizer and flat noodles pasta with duck meat for main course. Also ordered house white wine to start. The restaurant filled up quick. They brought cured meat with cheese on the house while I was waiting for the food. The dishes came out not so long after. Octopus was cooked right about of time, it was very tender. I enjoyed the pasta very much. All the dishes tasted so well that I want to order some more but I was full. This is my go to restaurant if I come to Varenna again. Highly recommended
