I don't know the community nowadays but back in the day it was vibrant with social and fund-raising events. Monsignor Mroczkowski (try to pronounce that) was the pastor from 1967 to 1986. Look up his obituary to see some high powered Catholic clergy credentials. He was revered by parishoners and became Pastor Emeritus. He had a good voice and ran the choir. I think his degree was in Gregorian chant. That title was conferred by the Pope, so we didn't address him as Father, but Monsignor. This would be a holy place to me even if it were not an official holy place. So many funerals. My people are gone.

The deceased died from Covid and was cremated before the services. Once he went in the hospital his loved ones never saw him alive again. He was in the hospital approximately 2 weeks. This catholic church told them they could not have a eulogy for him. I found this heartbreaking for everyone. The family, loved ones, extended family and friends needed to hear a eulogy. They needed these words from a loved one or someone to add closure to this. I have defended my Catholic church over many controversies over the years but I think this is a disgrace. I can't forgive this. Could they not allow 10 minutes for a eulogy?

The Priests here know the faith and are not "push overs" for people who want to be more liberal in the way the Mass is celebrated. I attend the Latin Tridentine Mass here and the people who attend that Mass are very warm. The Mass is also celebrated at times as Ad Orientum which is refreshing for a Novus Ordo Mass. I don't live in this Parish but I travel to get here so that I can assist at a reverent Mass. So if you want true Tradition and reverence in a Mass, this is the place for you. God bless the Priests in this Church! Update: There is a new pastor at this parish. He does not know how to say the Latin Mass. He doesn't even help distribute holy communion because he does not know the Latin prayer to say during the distribution to each person. The only Mass given Ad Orientem is the Latin Mass. None of the other Masses are given ad orientem. I feel this parish is going backwards in terms of the way the Masses are given/said. There are no altar boys for the Latin Mass but it is in the works for some boys to be trained to serve on the altar at the Latin Mass. It's a good thing there is at least one priest who just learned the Latin Mass and he hopes to get better at saying the Latin Mass. So please pray for Fr. Matthew.

It is the only church in the city beside Holy Name Cathedral that is open to public for practically the whole day. I discovered this church in the 1980's when I needed to find a church where I could pray for my friend who eventually died at the Taste of Chicago when he fell into the lake. I have been going there every since. Although I'm not a parishner, I still go there often because they offer so many masses. They have a lot of Sunday masses. Their last English mass on Sunday is at 4:30pm. I think there's one or two more masses in Spanish after that. I missed mass at my regular parish (St. Thomas Apostle in Hyde Park) and went to OLG's last English mass of the day with my daughter ( also named Guadalupe). The priest, to our suprise was Nigerian! I enjoyed the mass but my daughter said that she couldn't understand the preist's accent. This church gave me great comfort when I was having a very difficult pregnancy with my daughter. I came from my Chatham neighborhood and prayed there several times a week. No churches in my neighborhood or even my own parish was open during the weekday at a convienient time so I could pray. Even though OLG is originally a Mexican parish, they are very welcoming. Not " funny acting" like many non- ethnic parishes, making you feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. Many various ethnicities come here. Next to my own parish, this is my most favorite church in the city!

This is one of the hidden treasures of the East Side located on east 114th St. This church is a…read moreprecious example of the Serbian style of Byzantine architecture. It is a must to see if visiting the East Side as this hidden treasure should lure visitors just as the Bahai Temple does in Wilmette. It's truly something to behold. The church is not very big however, it is very striking and sits nestled within a beautifully designed urban oasis of splendid landscaping within a tastefully done gated entrance and fencing. Nicely landscaped and well taken care of grounds, with access to the nearby Serbian Hall. The church itself is an architectural gem as it resembles a little gingerbread house to many western eyes. The interior is filled with many Orthodox frescoes, icons and like most all Orthodox churches has a feel of heaven on earth. As with most all Eastern Orthodox churches in Europe pews are not common, if you're puzzled by their absence. Christmas for Serbians is January 7th and Easter is on the Julian Calendar.
