I started here about two years ago after wanting to get in better physical shape for Krav Maga lessons at another school, and business owners take note, I saw an advertisement at the Spring Hill Mall advertising Tactical MMA's 90-Day Kettle Bell challenge. Fans of Tim Ferriss already know about the impressive weight loss and muscle gain when just practicing with kettlebells, so I really didn't need any convincing, I signed up for the class and have slowly have been toning my body while gaining muscle mass. Tony, Jennifer, Jasmyn and yes, Destiny truly care to see their students perform to the best of their abilities. I've been training for ruck marches, a planned Goruck Tough in September and between starting a small security start-up and the extra workouts and rucks with 30-50lbs of weight I've added outside of working out at Tactical Mixed Martial Arts, there is never a negative word spoken, its an extremely friendly, positive training academy with life-affirming words to keep you working out, even if you find some of the workouts too much. Recently I've started taking their Cardio MMA class, which is three nights a week of a high-intensity circuit workout that I generally attend two and have added a weighted vest to add some variety to my workouts. Please don't let the name scare you, everyone attending kettlebells and the Cardio MMA classes are friendly, and like Tony and Jennifer, want to see you succeed with your physical fitness goals and have a good time doing it. The only complaint I have (Its a small one!) is the music sometimes gets a little repetitive, but they have been soliciting others for more music to add to the rotation. A huge part of what makes this place special is the leadership and instruction. Master B!, Mr. Riedl, and Mr. Paynes, both father Payne and son Payne, are outstanding instructors and highly capable martial artists. You can tell immediately they bring decades of experience across multiple martial arts. Their depth of knowledge shows not just in technique, but in how they teach, correct, and develop students at every level. The kids program is exceptional. The instructors meet kids where they are while still holding high standards for respect, focus, and effort. My boys are challenged, supported, and genuinely excited to train. As an adult student, I appreciate that the classes are demanding without being intimidating. I always feel encouraged to push a little further, safely and intelligently. One of the most meaningful parts of this journey has been earning our black belts together. Jeff, Chuck, and Justin go out of their way to make Muay Thai and BJJ as accessible as possible. It's a community-oriented, family-friendly environment. I see lots of parents come for kids' classes, then stick around to train themselves. As a woman and a beginner, I usually prefer training with other women, and no one has ever pressured me to work with someone I'm not comfortable with. There are almost always great women to train with, and as I've gotten more comfortable training with men, I've had great experiences with them, too. I live pretty far away, and the coaches are also very understanding that I can only come once or twice a week. Since some members are there almost every day to prep for competitions, even people who are more self-defense oriented (like me) have the opportunity to experience more intense sparring if they want it. If you've ever considered learning Muay Thai or BJJ, or just want to learn to defend yourself, Curran is a great place to do it, regardless of age. You can take it at your own pace and will feel encouraged, not pressured, to aim higher. Over time, with gentle encouragement from Master John, he has become laser-focused on getting better at taekwondo. He has taken to heart the taekwondo tenets of courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit and applied it to everything he does in school and extracurriculars. He will soon be earning his black belt. I especially like the way Master John requires discipline but uses a sense of humor to make everything fun for the students.
