As I've shared from several recent church experiences, I'm currently in the process of visiting…read moreCentral Indiana faith communities after having spent several years in a historic peace denomination yet feeling like certain aspects of my life, especially around my disability, were being neglected. The Creek is located not far from Franklin Central High School on the Southeast Side of Indy. While I'm not quite sure if it qualifies as a "mega-church," it's certainly larger than the usual churches that I attend and I'll confess to having been intimidated as I drove up to its rather enormous campus. I'd been referred to The Creek by friends who knew I desired a faith community where my disability would be accepted. As an aging adult with spina bifida, I've largely outlived most of my supports and I've been longing for a wider circle. The Creek has a strong ministry to persons with disabilities, though my experience is that it largely focuses on individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities - both adults and children. I contacted the Special Needs Director (for the record, I hate the phrase "special needs"). I wanted to get a feel for attitudes. She was quite friendly and responded twice to my inquiries and encouraged me to attend their 4:30pm class on Sundays. I intended to do that after our last e-mail exchange, but I ended up ill that Sunday and committed the next couple Sundays. So, it took me about a month to follow through. They offer high-tech, contemporary worship services only with programs for children, youth and those with disabilities among other populations. I shared with the director that I desired a community where I could both "be" disabled and share my gifts. As I get older, my body is more difficult to manage and I welcome the vulnerability that comes with people knowing who I am physically and emotionally on a more vulnerable level. However, many of the ways in which I'm gifted also still long to be expressed. The Creek has a form, kind of like an application, filled out on everyone it serves in their disability ministry to ensure an understanding of physical needs, behavioral supports, etc. I was impressed that it acknowledged physical disabilities. It's sometimes a little more difficult to serve those whose needs may be physical up to and including restroom needs. The Creek seems to have a large staff with an abundance of volunteers including both men and women, young and old including students from nearby University of Indianapolis. The parking lot is huge, there's quite a bit of accessible parking - it's not particularly well marked but it's present. The church is multi-level, but elevators are present. I wasn't sure where to find the disability ministry, called Access, but tried to enter through an outer door labeled "Access." It was locked. I'm assuming it's the volunteer entrance and they know how to, well, access it. I got a little frustrated, but decided I would just experience the worship anyway. If I like the worship, I'll pursue the disability ministry. Ironically, on my way out I think I figured it out. It's not real obvious which entrance to use, but I followed the crowds and figured it out. They have Information booths around and volunteers answer questions. I received a gift as a first-time visitor (a coffee mug, note pad, pen). I was pointed to the large sanctuary. It's auditorium style. The worship style is definitely contemporary. I've got no issues with contemporary worship - in fact, I'd dare say I prefer it. As a Sunday afternoon service, however, it felt very dry. The worship leader was trying hard to energize parishioners, but the rock n' rollish music kind of felt like that one-hit wonder band desperately trying for a second hit. Unfortunately, when that happens it often feels more like performance than worship. The pastor, Dr. Gary Johnson, started a new series largely centered around the Bible. He's their long-time pastor, but due to retire in April 2019. I liked his speaking style, though I found the message itself surprisingly negative and lacking in inspiration. The preaching is consistently Bible based; the theology stresses inerrancy and infallibility of the Bible and much of today's centered around society's increasing rejection of that. I found people friendly and helpful including one man who offered, and I accepted, to bring me communion where I was sitting toward the back. The Creek is a pretty good drive for me and I don't consider it likely that it's a place I would call home nor will I likely return to experience the disability ministry. However, for those seeking a large church, contemporary worship with a theology that stresses the inerrancy and infallibility of the Bible, The Creek has much to offer and certainly will embrace those in your family with disabilities. Be aware that the auditorium is at a slant; if you're on wheels, you may wheel ahead if your brakes aren't in good order.

I moved to Indy about 5 years ago and struggled to find a genuine church with a heart for the people around us. I bounced around to different places until a friend of mine recommended Soma. If you're looking for something more and something real, please, please, please come see us on Sunday. I felt so welcomed in this place and have truly found a church home. Soma has a heart for community, racial reconciliation and showing the love of Christ through their love of people. I leave every Sunday more full than I came in and I think that's really the measure of church health. Complementary coffee and cucumber water is just the icing on the cake :)

Soma Church self-identifies as an "interdenominational family of neighborhood churches" that is…read moreindependent and autonomous, though you can get some sense of its theological foundation by looking at its partnerships - The Summit Network, the Sojourn Network (not to be confused with the far more progressive Sojourners), the Southern Baptist Convention, and Fellowship Associates. A good summary, as provided by their own website, is "We are a Jesus-ruled, elder-led, deacon-served, and congregationally-responsible church." Soma Church has three locations in Indy - this location along with a downtown location that meets at 2325 East New York Street inside the Westminster Services offices, and a Northwest side location. I've now attended services at both this location and the downtown Indy location (which is really more Near-Eastside, but I digress). They also offer a surprisingly large number of small groups, called Missional Communities, throughout the week on most sides of town. As this is a church that seemed to pop up out of nowhere, you can really tell that quite a bit of effort and pre-planning went into their church planting. I've yet to attend a Missional Community, though I've seriously considered it and know of a couple within my own neighborhood. The service at this location that I attended is in an old church that became an office building - then, Soma appeared to have acquired the building and it's back to being a church. They have two accessible parking spots along the East side of the building - a level sidewalk goes up to a ramp that will take you into the rear entrance of their contemporarily designed sanctuary. The ramp is likely not ADA compliant - it's lengthy, but the grade may be a bit challenging for someone with upper body weakness. I will note that I saw multiple people and was greeted well before I'd made it in the building. The service offered a sort of pop/rock worship along with a key speaker along with involvement of others. The sanctuary itself is pretty wheelchair friendly, though I think children's programming is upstairs and there's not an elevator. The congregational leader I met seemed somewhat concerned about my experience with access, though it was a bit better than I expected and significantly better than the Midtown location. The Midtown location is located in a more urban neighborhood. The office building is fairly new and has a nice, concrete ramp into it (with an easy grade). Though, parking around here completely sucks and is definitely not wheelchair friendly. There's some street parking, a non-paved lot across a small street (lots of rocks/gravel), and another lot that is better paved but requires you to access broken sidewalks. It works in good weather, but would be very difficult in poor weather. Once inside, however, things are fine. This service was a little more laid back - at Midtown, I also did run into one person I knew. Both services tend to run longer than the usual drive-thru, one hour service (75-90 minutes for both). The messages tend to be a bit longer. Both locations skew toward millennial age - younger families with some exceptions. All elders are men, though women do participate in worship including music, readings, announcements and, of course, children's programming. They do also have women in operational leadership roles. As one might expect, the downtown location tends to be more diverse - at least in terms of race, while downtown also seemed to have more kids. They both offer 9am and 11am services - I attended the 11am at both locations. The Northwest location only has a 10am service. Overall, there's much to love here. My gut is that Soma leans a bit more conservative than I am, but there's an openness to discussion and to simply being human that I really appreciate. I found both locations fairly friendly - I was greeted by leaders in both spots; definitely greeted more warmly by attendees at the downtown spot even before my friend showed up. It also didn't feel "artificial." It wasn't like everyone came up to me, but a handful did and they engaged in more than the usual "Hi" and "Welcome." It felt genuine. As I am most looking for a "community" where I am free to both live into my gifts and be "disabled," my gut tells me I'd lean more toward Midtown despite my love of urban ministry. Despite some accessibility concerns at both spots, my sense is once people really identify your presence that access becomes easier because you become part of the community. Given my accessibility concerns, I can't quite go the 5-star (as I never did for my previous church home that I attended for several years) but this is a marvelous, communal, and growing church and I really like the missional community idea that offers options for connection throughout the week. Young families and singles will enjoy the spirit here, though those of us a bit older, including myself, won't feel awkward or out of place.

This crazy virus isn't helping us and I'm pretty sure it's not helping other churches as well. Many churches have done away with Sunday School. Not us!! We have Sunday School every Sunday for all ages. We pray, study God's word, talk and laugh, take prayers and prayers of praise, then we pray and dismiss for church. Sunday School 9:30-10:30. Worship 10:30-11:30. Wear a mask. We take communion every Sunday because the Bible says to do it anytime we are gathered together. Tom Scott is our minister and he is fantastic!! I had lost a really important person in my life due to inner city violence rhat invaded out little…read moretown. My now Pastor Tom Scott was not only there that night of the incident but when I made the choice to turn to God he welcomed me in with open and loving arms. Our congregation is family to myself and my daughter and show us love constantly and consistently. I can not tell you enough about this Church The music is so fun and upbeat and Tom always has a good message to share. If you are looking for a church and church family I highly recommend it.

The church and its members are very warm and inviting to all who seek to be in the presence of God and his people. I really enjoyed the singing, lead by their Praise Team, and the sermon given by their new pastor, Pastor Eliot Brooks. Pastor took time to acknowledge members transferring to and from other churches, members' birthdays and anniversaries, and even sang happy birthday to those celebrating theirs soon. He likes to sing and that is very nice. This isn't a very large congregation, and they are a very tight- knit group. Many of the members are relatives, as I have family that attend there as well.

I've contacted the church, but no one ever followed up. I'm sharing this so others know to be cautious and trust their instincts. I hope leadership takes steps to protect others in the future.

Focuses on community outreach, the congregation accepts all and reaches out to those who really need them. The neighborhood is a little run down but charming!
