I've been attending this academy for about two week now and I've enjoyed every minute of it. It's a small family owned martial arts school and you can really feel that family atmosphere from the moment you walk in. Everyone here is so friendly and welcoming they make you feel like part of the team right away. The facility is clean and well maintained and you can tell they take pride in their space. Starting in 2026 they'll be introducing a dress code so everyone trains in the same uniform which I think is a great idea to build unity. Each class is about an hour long and for adults there's a sparring session afterward at no extra cost just people helping each other improve. Jacob and Sarah were especially welcoming and answered a littany of questions, and even remembered me when I called back to reschedule. I was a student at impact from November to June, and have recently moved to Colorado due to the military. Let me tell you, this academy is run like a well oiled machine and there are few places like it. The other academies I have tried out just don't have the amazing atmosphere this place does. Guro Ervin, the owner, continually pushes to better the academy and students, whether he is pushing out an Academy app that tells students everything they need to know about upcoming events, or pushing the students harder than ever in preparation for a big tournament. You also learn about life, which I didn't expect initially. You grow as a martial artist and a person, I have been told by many people they have see a change in me since I started. In all my years of martial arts. I've never seen a program that caters to the children's age range and is excellent at teaching them respect, manners and technique. I've attended many school and I have never attended a class that has kids just around my age. A lot were mixed with adults. Not here. There are different classes. mui Thai, jujitsu, incorporating Filipino kali, mixed martial arts. It took me a year of checking out classes, finally finding this perfect martial arts class for my kids. My sons cannot get their white belt until they have proven to my husband and i that they are ready to be given their belts. They have to keep up with chores, clear their table after eating and use their manners. I am so happy that they just don't give kids their belts so easily so they know that everything is earned. My boys are in the 5-7year old classes. They are learning to develop their character and defend themselves. Their teacher coach "Simo" Eloy is excellent at what she does. Her nurturing spirit and ways she communicates with the kids and teaches them is by far amazing. The kids actually get to build a respectful relationship with their teachers and coaches. I am so happy that they are enjoying their time here. They are receiving quality self defense and I enjoy that the kids are all taught respect. They have a "powerful word of the month" and there is summer camp registration. There is nothing better than coming to bring the kids to class and not having to worry that their are some crazy rambunctious kids to deal with with. They treat everyone like family. The class sizes are a good size. With two times a week of martial arts its perfect for my boys. IMPACT is the best in all of the Hampton roads area. read more

So I came here for another event BUT I still wanted to review this spot since I was able to observed the culture and the students enjoying and practicing their lessons. Coming in I was welcome by the sweet owner/Simo (instructor, teacher) and she explained what the students (young & old)were doing and the different martial arts they teach at their facility. I was especially impressed that they teach Filipino martial arts!! Whaaatt... Filipinos have their own martial arts?!? Who knew! The husband-wife combo are passionate about the art of self-confidence by passing that on to their students.Not only are they teaching you the physical aspect of it but the culture and history of the art too, bonus points! We recently enrolled our older two into muay thai kickboxing at Impact. We had looked around and other schools, but Impact really won over all members of the family. It's not a large school (yet) by any means nor does it mass-produce black belts in record time. However, they will be moving to a huge location soon. Muay Thai kickboxing, Filipino Martial arts (Kali, Escrima, Arnis, & Silat), Judo, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are offered here. Impact really won us over with their family atmosphere. Once you join, you and your family became part of "the tribe". The students and parents are super supportive of one another. Egos are checked at the door. We've been super-impressed how the other kids have taken it upon themselves to help our kids out if they've needed it. The kids are also taught a month-long lesson on a "powerful word" (ie. self-control, anger management, etc.) for character development...along with a short homework assignment due at the end of the month. Eloy (Simo) and Carrie ("Ate Carrie") do a fantastic job with the kids. The Quintin kids are also frequently seen in the kids class helping out with instruction. The adults' classes are also very well-run but unfortunately these kids have to go to college one day, so classes for us will have to wait. Another important note is that the school is CLEAN!!! They sanitize the mats every night. The part of the school that should be the stinkiest (the mat area) does not smell...at all. The students are required to use the hand sanitizer provided before class and the students are asked not to go in the retest room without their shoes. As parents, that's something that impresses us and gives us peace of mind that our kids aren't rolling around in complete disgustingness...yes, I said it. Important to note, Impact moves to a much larger location at the beginning of June (2013). read more

I've been training here for a little over a year now and it's always great to want to keep coming back to a gym you feel at home with. For Muay Thai and BJJ I've been blessed with very knowledgeable and legitimate instructors: Kru Ervin, Simo, Kru Geno, Kuya Trevor, Coach Sarah and Até Carrie are all awesome! I appreciate that they have a curriculum that allows you to not only advance properly but it also gives you the ability to review certain combinations or moves that you may forget as you add to your fighting toolbox. All egos are left at the door and everyone that I've interacted with has been very polite and respectful. Stopped in the other day to check things out. I watched a couple of classes and I was impressed. It takes a lot of time and understanding to teach several kinds of people. Eloy took the time to talk, instruct and train all of her students so each one understood what needed to be done. Each student not only learned something but seemed to enjoy what they were doing. Ervin taught 2 classes while I was there. The interaction he took with each student was remarkable. The level of instruction was perfect and catered to everyone. It's great! So much fun and the teachers are all super nice and encouraging. I've only been going for a few months but I can tell I've improved and I don't feel as bad if I eat a little bit more knowing I'll definitely burn it off. At the age of 47 I decided to get back in shape. I tried different "programs" and a year later settled into Muay Thai (Thai kick boxing).
