Thornbury records on High St opened back in February and has been accumulating an avid fan base ever since. The features a great range of new contemporary and classic vinyl records, along with more obscure band t-shirts, CDs by local and unsigned artists and a selection of small and independent publications covering a variety of topics. The shop is easy to browse and tidy, and the front window is filled with your obligatory live music and album posters. There's a chilled kind of vibe, and the proprietors are happy to let you be or have a chat about music or the store if you're into the scene. They also sell stuff online, and run competitions through the store's blog. All in all, a very funky establishment.

I walk in and I don't know where to start. I could spend hours browsing through the offerings, and I often do! The cool thing about Dixon's, is you can not only buy all you old faves, but you can also sell your records there. On more than one occasion I have been tempted to take down mums Bony M collection because I'm sick of hearing it played everytime I go over! But that's a whole other story.. Dixon's also have a good range of DVD's, CD's and Bu Ray DVD's.

The notion of buying and selling second hand goods only came to me after being in this store. The quality of wares is good - the Blackburn one having a stronger selection of Metal and Hard Rock than most of the others - and as it turns out they had to move due to the quantity of stock. Rest assured it only ended up being a few shops up the street, taking over an old garage and converting it into a huge warehouse space. There is even enough room to house a piano in the foyer area, though I'm yet to see any play it. The guys working there have been there since my early days in the store, and are keen music antiquity men and fonts of music knowledge. They can tell you who was having it off with who's girlfriend in the band while making a certain record. Their historical music gossip will make you blush.

Records Etcetera features a wide ranging pool of vinyl records and CDs; from soul, funk and reggae right through to folk and electronica. The collection covers both mainstream and obscure artists, and seems to be priced according to popularity and condition. The store also flogs a range of retro hi-fi/lo-fi equipment systems, so if you haven't actually got a record player to play your collection you could grab one there. There are also a couple of slightly random items of second hand clothing. Like most stores of this genre it's not open every day, but stays open until 7pm. The proprietor is an especially friendly kind of guy and is up for a good chat about music and the local scene. Music buffs will enjoy.

Well, it turns out that frames actually aren't all that cheap, though the staff here were pretty helpful. Mind you, like a lot of these places, they generally sell originals, not prints, or if they do sell prints, they tend to be for artists that don't happen to be dead. That's a bit of a shame, though it could be because stores generally only have so much space. It was good though, and they do have some interesting works here as well.
