In May, I traveled with my mother to Playa del Carmen, and unfortunately, during the trip, she…read morebecame ill. We called an ambulance, which took her to Costamed Hospital. Upon arrival, we presented our U.S. passports, and I was immediately asked to pay a $4,000 USD deposit. They also asked if we had travel insurance, to which I replied yes. The staff were polite when communicating with the insurance company. The hospital requested the maximum coverage amount and a guarantee of payment (GOP). However, since our insurance worked on a reimbursement basis, I was required to pay all expenses upfront and file for reimbursement once we returned to the United States. My mother was diagnosed with pneumonia and hospitalized for only 12 hours--from 10:00 p.m. to 11:00 a.m. the next day. The total cost for that brief stay was $14,000 USD, which I found absolutely outrageous and unjustified. I only had two credit cards with limited credit remaining, and when I couldn't cover the full amount, the hospital suggested transferring her to a public hospital. At the public hospital, my mother received care for six days. The conditions were very basic, and we had to purchase her medications ourselves, but she received the necessary treatment and recovered. Most surprising of all, we were not charged anything for her stay there. I offered to pay, but the Mexican government covers hospitalization for uninsured individuals, which was our case as foreign visitors. Even if we had been required to pay, the total cost for six days would have been only $700 USD. During her stay at the public hospital, I considered bringing her back to Costamed since our insurance would reimburse us. However, Costamed kept insisting on knowing how much coverage I had left in my policy. This made me feel like they were trying to take advantage of my situation as a foreign tourist. While I acknowledge that the care at Costamed was professional and the facilities were well maintained, the pricing was unacceptable. It's clear that they exploit tourists during moments of vulnerability, such as medical emergencies. This experience was extremely disappointing and left a bitter impression of what should have been fair and ethical medical care

If you are an American citizen and vacationing without travelers insurance STAY AWAY FROM THIS…read moreHOSPITAL , they will suck your last penny . 4 years ago we were in playa del Carmen and my son cut his finger splitting a Lemon, we rushed to Amerimed for treatment , he got admitted but before he's treated they ask you to for a guarantee money in my case was $2000 After they applied 4 stitches in my son finger my bill was $2000 dollars I ask why so much and they said because he is American if he was Mexican the bill would have been around $800 dollars . Yesterday my wife had a stomach infection she was admitted and treated , I was terrified as to how much I was gonna pay this time , well they came and ask for $5000.00 pesos guaranteed. Why in pesos you may ask ? Well because my wife is Mexican and she had a Mexican passport . So what a difference our bill was only $219 dollars - I won't say they are bad practice they really have good doctors and good service , but for a foreigner it will cost you.

Shortly after, I became extremely ill and was taken to the Xcaret clinic, where I was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. The clinic and ambulance appeared to have some sort of arrangement with Hospital Amerimed, which charged an outrageous $3,459.50 USD in less than an hour--and they wanted even more. My suspicions grew when the doctor at Amerimed seemed more focused on defending the hotel than my condition, claiming I had hepatitis and insisting it couldn't have been caused by the hotel's food, as hepatitis takes weeks to manifest. Ultimately, I was transferred to Hospital Azura in Cancún, where it was confirmed that my acute pancreatitis was induced by food poisoning. My lipase and amylase levels were extremely elevated. The negative reviews about this place are accurate--stay away.

These people killed my father. There is no reason he should…read morehave died. The nurse staff is completely untrained and ill-equipped to treat patients. They did not know how to respond to a patient in cardiac arrest and, as a result, I watched my father die before my very eyes. My untrained eye could see he was arresting, but the nurses screwed around complaining that he was too big for them to move for 7 minutes before calling an emergency (because I started screaming for help). They waited another 4 before beginning one-handed compressions on a 230 pound patient. My dad never had a chance. He was admitted for hyponatremia and left two nights later in a body bag. I'm pursuing legal representation, but attorneys are disinterested in the case because of cartels' involvement in the private hospital system. Bottom line, if you want to live...try ANY other hospital. This incident was beyond tragic and 100% avoidable. For the $30K USD we paid, Hospiten could afford to buy wall-mounted AED machines for each room on the floor. Instead, they rolled a huge box machine into my dad's room 20 minutes into his heart attack. When I went up to collect his things 3 hours after they evacuated him to the ER, the remnants and mess were still all over the place. I had to collect his hearing aids from feces on the bathroom floor and the nurses who were literally responsible for his death watched me drag all of his belongings down the hall in a pillowcase as I wept. This is sub-human care. I wouldn't trust these people to take care of animals much less humans.

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS--THEY ARE SCAMMERS AND INCOMPETENT!…read more If I could give this place negative stars, I would. Hospiten Riviera Maya is an absolute disgrace to medical care. They made me wait over 4 HOURS in pain while they sat around doing nothing. And it wasn't just me--there was a kid in there who needed stitches, and guess what? They charged his family $13,000 USD for a few stitches! Let that sink in. Then, they had the audacity to try to charge me $2,000 USD for a simple IV--something that costs a fraction of that anywhere else. They are shameless thieves who prey on tourists, exploiting people when they are vulnerable and in need of medical attention. The staff? Rude, indifferent, and completely incompetent. They act like they're doing you a favor just by acknowledging your existence. No urgency, no care, just a bunch of scammers in white coats looking to rob you blind. Hospiten Riviera Maya is the biggest rip-off I have ever experienced, and I wouldn't wish this place on my worst enemy. Do yourself a favor--if you need medical attention, go literally anywhere else. This place should be shut down.

Bad for tourism. also I contacted the corporate website and they responded that i can send them my bill and they will help me understand it. what a scam
