Yesterday my wife had a stomach infection she was admitted and treated , I was terrified as to how much I was gonna pay this time , well they came and ask for $5000.00 pesos guaranteed. Why in pesos you may ask ? Well because my wife is Mexican and she had a Mexican passport . So what a difference our bill was only $219 dollars - I won't say they are bad practice they really have good doctors and good service , but for a foreigner it will cost you. read more

Shortly after, I became extremely ill and was taken to the Xcaret clinic, where I was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. The clinic and ambulance appeared to have some sort of arrangement with Hospital Amerimed, which charged an outrageous $3,459.50 USD in less than an hour--and they wanted even more. My suspicions grew when the doctor at Amerimed seemed more focused on defending the hotel than my condition, claiming I had hepatitis and insisting it couldn't have been caused by the hotel's food, as hepatitis takes weeks to manifest. Ultimately, I was transferred to Hospital Azura in Cancún, where it was confirmed that my acute pancreatitis was induced by food poisoning. My lipase and amylase levels were extremely elevated. AVOID AT ALL COSTS ! I had an absolutely horrific experience at this hospital in Playa del Carmen, Cancun, and I feel compelled to warn others. My visit started with what I thought was a routine issue, but it quickly turned into a nightmare. The main surgeon insisted on removing my appendix, claiming it was an urgent necessity, without even conducting a proper physical exam. They based this solely on bloodwork, which--surprise, surprise--came back showing my appendix wasn't the problem at all. It turns out I had a bacterial infection, something they conveniently failed to mention or address. Despite this, the surgeon kept pushing for the surgery, completely ignoring the evidence. And made it seem the surgery was a life or death situation. To make matters worse, they quoted me an outrageous $28,000 USD for the procedure, not even including post-surgery costs. It felt like they saw dollar signs the moment we mentioned we were from San Diego, California. The whole experience screamed scam--overcharging tourists and pushing unnecessary procedures for profit. We were charged $2500 for a simple overnight visit and 2 tests performed on me . Feeling like we were being robbed, we decided to get a second opinion elsewhere. The next doctor we saw performed various physical tests on me to determine if there was an issue with the appendix , turns out the appendix was never the problem and it was just travelers diarrhea . The doctor was honest enough to admit she wasn't 100% sure it was an appendix issue and referred us to a well-trusted surgeon specializing in abdomens. Upon arriving, this surgeon ran various tests and confirmed the appendix was never the problem--it was just a bacterial infection, easily treatable without surgery. The doctors we saw charged $40 each , and they were 100x more helpful than AMERIMED hospital who charged 63x more and tried removing my appendix and God knows what else they would've removed without me knowing . He even warned us that hospitals in Playa del Carmen, like the one we'd fled, are notorious for taking advantage of foreigners, pushing costly and unneeded procedures. We left the first hospital feeling betrayed and exploited. This place isn't about patient care; it's about greed. I'd strongly advise anyone to steer clear of this hospital. Your health and wallet deserve better. I'm now back in California and got a check up , the doctors confirmed the appendix was never the issue , and how the doctors we got the 2nd and 3rd opinion from were correct all along . read more

As an American with a sick child during her birthday trip with a parasite, it was extremely scary to test out a foreign emergency room. I was wonderfully impressed with our ER doctor. Sadly, I forgot her name but she was a blonde extremely kind and knowledgeable doctor that explained everything in detail every time she had an update. The office staff was mediocre. They made a million errors causing me to have to pay countless times due to their math error but the Pros beat the Cons. Sadly, the ER room in the back is super tiny so that's a con also. Regardless, I highly recommend coming here if you ever need ER services while on vacation. read more

They asked me to pay $200 for them to look into my ear for less than 5 sec and tell me exactly what I already knew about wax blocking it. We were at a waterpark (Xel-ha) when my wife stated having trouble breathing. After a visit to the first aid tent, the staff advised she needed to go to the hospital in an ambulance ASAP, so I chose Amerimed. Then I got there and started reading all of the horrible reviews (On Google reviews) AND I BECAME TERRIFIED. They require $2000 up front before they start ANYTHING. They don't want to deal with insurance: they want cash. I sat there and worried like crazy while I imagined the worst: we'd be stuck there for days, at their mercy, not knowing if anything they tell me is true, or if they're just trying to milk me for every penny I had. Ultimately we left after about 5 hours feeling like we were treated fairly and professionally. Paid $1850 for the visit and left with 4 prescriptions and felt well. read more

On a cruise ship, my husband became very ill with a Pulmonary Embolism, and they sent us Amerimed. We had no idea with to expect and were very surprised at the top-notch care received. The Cardiologist, Dr. Louky, explained in detail the treatments and the risks. The staff and nurses were always available, and we communicated with translation apps on our phones. Amerimed is a private hospital that caters to the tourism industry and works with medical insurance or cash. When we first arrived they asked for 10,000.00 before doing any tests. When he needed to go to ICU they asked for another 25,000 but accepted 15,000, as the two combined = 25,000. The next day our health insurance was approved and then they let the 10,000 hold expire on the credit card, however, the 15,000 they actually charged the credit card, and we are expecting a refund of another 10,000. They did say it would take a couple of weeks. All in all, if you are in Mexico and need to seek top-notch medical, find the closest Amerimed. read more

I was very happy with the hospital. My wife got bitten by a monkey on our cruise and needed a rabies shot right away. The cruise medical department had no vaccine and another hospital recommended by the ship had none. When I called this hospital at night from the ship they confirmed that they had vaccine at hand. Acudí el día de ayer a urgencias por un dolor intestinal muy intenso, al llegar me dijeron que la espera era de 40 minutos ya que habían dos pacientes antes de mi, decidimos esperar y finalmente me pasaron a valoración y me comentaron que el doctor me vería en alrededor de hora y media, para esto ya el dolor hasta me había pasado y solo quería descansar, la enferma me comentó que podíamos irnos si no queríamos esperar así que cuando decidimos irnos la secretaria insistió en que nos quedáramos que ya no tardarían mucho, se fue de la sala y nos dejaron esperando como 40 minutos más, queríamos irnos y al pedirle a la chica de seguridad que nos abriera nos dijo que no podía que solo la secretaria tenía la tarjeta. Para esto ya nos tenían esperando más de una hora y solo queríamos irnos a casa pero nos tenían prácticamente encerrados así que le insistí amablemente que nos ayudara a salir y le llamo a la secretaria quien se tardó alrededor 25 minutos más en llegar y nos pasó con el doctor cuando ya para este punto nos queríamos ir, básicamente nos tuvieron encerrados y yo quien sufro de ansiedad la pasé muy muy mal, no volvería a ir jamás ya que si hubiera una emergencia literalmente no hay manera que puedas salir de ahí! read more

As a US citizen in need of health care in Mexico, this place did not meet expectations. Documents provided by the US consulate explained that costs of healthcare must be made known up front. This place was unable to do that. We arrived in the middle of the night as my wife was very ill, vomiting every 15 minutes, weak and nauseated. We were charged $1000 USD down payment up front as we did not have travel insurance, to be seen in the emergency room. The doctor in urgent care did not seem too concerned and treated her for dehydration. She was given two IVs with nausea medication. The doctor did no tests for electrolytes or treatment for stomach acid after vomiting for over 24 hours. He discharged her insisting she be patient, the vomiting would stop. This bill ended up costing $469 when we left. We received a refund on the rest of the down payment. Well, we were patient, and we needed to return to the hospital 10 hours later as the symptoms had not gotten better. Another $1000 down and we were back in the ER. The new doctor gave more fluids and nausea meds. Nearly 4 hours later he tested for Pancreatitis. No other general blood work was done. Another ER doctor came on shift and refused to treat without admission to the hospital. We had no choice as my wife could not travel vomiting every 15 minutes. The new doctor had an attitude that would not allow for reason or question, he was adamant about getting us admitted. We were practically forced to be admitted to the hospital. Another $3000 down payment only to have a full blood and urine screen. These results were negative. She began treatment, finally, with acid reducers via IV and was told to fast for an endoscopy in the morning. Come morning, she was feeling better, and we refused the endoscopy, urgently left to get home on the next flight. We were charged another $1000 for one visit from a gastroenterologist. The bill showed multiple consults and visits, though we only saw her one time. I realized this after we were home that we were over billed. All in all we spent $469 for the first visit and $4169 for the second visit with no diagnosis. We were also over billed. I asked multiple times day and night what the costs of each treatment and test were. No one could ever give me an answer, and no one could ever tell me what our running bill was. It was very frustrating to be in a situation where we needed help and nobody could tell me how much it would cost. The staff was friendly, but the communication barrier for US citizen was real. My wife was able to keep fluid and food down later, the night we left. It seemed the acid reducer was the correct treatment for the issue, likely an ulcer, though it was not intended. The hospital charged us way too much money for treatment that could be done, and should have been done, when we were in the ER. I have no other experience with healthcare in Mexico, but sanitation was a concern. Most nurses and doctors did not use gloves, and most hand sanitizer dispensers in the building were empty. I suggest to US travelers two things: Travel Insurance (it can happen to you); and DEMAND COST UP FRONT. Nobody will tell you when you have exceeded your deposit, it seems nobody knows! I had a fall when on vacation in Play de Carmen and was taken by paramedics to this hospital. I was very nervous about going to a hospital in Mexico. I was pleasantly surprised with the facility and the staff. Doctors and nurses were very pleasant and caring, doctors spoke English and some nurses also. They did x-rays on my hips and pelvis and called in an orthopedic specialist. Thank goodness there was no broken bones. They kept me overnight and worked with my travel insurance Allianz to secure payment. The facility was very clean and nurses came when I buzzed for them. Specialist visited me in the ER and also came the next day and declared me stable and able to travel. Before you travel buy travel insurance you never know when you are going to need it. read more

Developed high blood pressure when arrived at resort. Next day it stayed high - 170/100. Had travel insurance and decided to visit emergency room at Amerimed. It was an awesome experience because they were very caring. Tests included blood work, chest x-ray and EKG. All negative. Turned out that I experienced an anxiety/panic attack. They administered a blood pressure medicine (pill) and an anxiety pill. Left hospital emergency room with 142/81 BP. Got prescription filled at pharmacy (pretty expensive) but when I returned to USA 4 days later my BP is around 140/75. Seeing my doctor tomorrow and expect to take anxiety medicine to remain calm. Time to stop worrying about things I once thought were important. I'm 63 years old in in good health. Glad Amerimed was nearby. God is good. read more
