We planted hollies this year when my husband decided that our sickly, approximately 80-100 ft tall, 50+ year-old Ponderosa pine and our dead birch needed to go. The pine was very close to the house, and the new bushes were underneath it. Naturally, I was worried. On the scheduled day, P.J.'s Tree Services' truck got a flat tire. Despite this, they still showed up and, while having it fixed, did an amazing job! P.J.'s team (Jeremy and, I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name, but to me, you're a rockstar) is friendly, highly skilled, hard-working, and extra mindful of their surroundings. When the trees were gone, the hollies and our house stood tall, and everything looked clean as if nothing had happened. The crew not only raked both yards and the driveway, but the owner of P.J.'s Tree Services came for a final inspection and, on his own initiative, even cleaned our gutters! I am very pleased. I have a 120 ft rock retaining wall to repair this summer, which will cost more than my 1st home purchase did, and these people were willing to work with me on costs to take down a tree, and some other clean up things, as the wall will consume everything I have for repairs this summer (and likely more). They showed up to work when they said they would, and got the job done very well, and hauled off all the branches. The fact they were willing to work with me was so impressive, and a lot of contractors these days could learn a good lesson from them on how to retain long term customers, and just be an old school human being and Montanan. I understand they have costs to cover, which I am sure are as outrageous as everything else is these days, and our negotiated price was fair for both them and me, which is as it should be (but often is not anymore). Barring any unforeseen circumstances, and there are plenty of those these days, I will have them back out next summer to do the rest of my property (after the wall is done). So, next summer (I hope) they will have a large job to do, but I will always support being treated fairly, even when the cost is large because the project to large.

Shocked and very upset is my experience with this company. In April I hired Rob to trim 3 large,…read moreold shade trees in my backyard. We agreed on a price and I asked when he'd come out to do the work as I'd be out of town a bit. He assured me once they could get me on the schedule I would be contacted. This did not happen. I came out of a camping trip on a Tuesday after no cell service since Friday evening to find text messages from him that they were done with the trimming (from Monday!) could I come outside and look at their work, and payment was needed. Shock and upset raced thru me as I read these messages, hours from my house to be able to see what had transpired in my absence. I was never contacted, nor did I consent to them entering my property that day to do work. I'd made clear to Rob when he did the bid to tell me when they'd put me on the schedule. When I told him this he apologized and said it was a miscommunication with the office. His miscommunication is my backyard being entered without my permission and trees being cut to a degree that the shade lost will take decades to grow back. The work they did was excessive and irreversible on old trees that took decades to grow. I am shocked, upset and unhappy with the entitlement that took place on my land while I was out of town. I truly don't understand how someone would think it's okay to work on someone's land without their knowledge. In no way do I feel good about my experience with them.

Fair for a professional landscaper, but they did my job precisely the opposite it dhould have been done (weed fabric UNDER the topsoil and no mulch, instead of topsoil then weed fabric then mulch). They told me they would refund my money then reneged. I just spent thousands redoing their work on the strength of their promise to refund my money. Incompetent AND crooks.

They will get the work done eventually, if you manage to get a response, but maybe not exactly how you would have wanted it. I've contacted this service three times now in the last two years: 1) The first time I wanted a prune on my apple tree and a mature lilac. Lilac came out reasonably well; I thought the apple tree was good too, until another arborist told me otherwise (see #2 below). Don't remember any details about the communication or billing but that means it wasn't horrible. 2) The following spring I tried to contact them again to prune more lilacs and trees, but they simply didn't respond to my website message or calls. I procrastinated on bugging them until I happened to get an ad in the mail from Cedar Grove Tree Service, who responded promptly and was able to schedule me in a few weeks. The owner/arborist told me not to prune my fruit trees until fall due to upcoming summer blight risk; he did prune a lilac and some various deadwood for a reasonable cost. He also told me that the reason my apple tree was now looking weird -- with a bunch of new branches growing straight up while the older branches curved downward -- was due to a traditional-style "orchard prune" by the previous tree service that goes against the natural shape of the tree. My apple tree is mostly ornamental, and this was the first I heard about different pruning methods... Able Tree Service just pruned the tree without telling me anything about what they intended to do. 3) The new arborist also informed me about another tree that had a severe aphid infestation, but he didn't do chemical treatments. So I ended up contacting Able again after failing to get through to Treasure State Tree Service (sensing a theme here? the more established the tree service, the less they care about small individual customers). Able's quote for a 12mo-residual treatment was quite reasonable. They didn't give me any commitment on timing, and it took several weeks before a guy randomly showed up one day without notice... but at this point I'm expecting such service from landscaping companies. I received an invoice after another little while, and this time I opted to pay with credit card since the invoice PDF *and* the payment service itself did not indicate a surcharge. But surprise! There actually is a hidden surcharge, which they warn about in the email but not the PDF, and which nonetheless is NOT indicated on the page you put your CC number in (in fact, that final payment page explicitly lies about "Surcharge: $0.00"). Will I use them again? For more chemical treatment work, assuming this latest one works as advertised, maybe/probably. For pruning, no, because I've found a more reliable arborist. But if you can't find anyone better to return your call, these guys aren't the worst choice on the block.

I saw a few cuts on the tree, but minimal done. Brought my friend by to double check that I wasn't crazy, and that more should've been cut. She confirmed. There were even branches left on the tree that were textbook examples of what should've been cut. The person I spoke with was very nice to me when I said I would only pay part of my bill.
