The LA fitness closed near me so I decided to try this gym. I wish I had joined a lot sooner. Your first time there they give you a free day pass to try it out. They have a lot of cool and different machines I have never seen before. After 8:00 PM it's kinda a ghost town and you can use any machines you want for the most part. As an "out of town-resident" I must say I was bummed that I only came to do cardio, but looking forward to coming back to lift soon! Corbin at the desk was so nice and helpful and the gym is definitely one to join. First off, it was a CLEAN gym!! Second, they have a variety of machines and space. Older style bodybuilding machines but kept in great shape! Definitely made this bikini competitor happy to see! Would highly recommend for any local or visiting bodybuilders! Functional fitness/turf area Tons of machines! Free weights Big cardio sections: treadmill, stairs, variety of bikes and ellipticals as well as some specialty cardio equipment. I loved seeing the adapted equipment too like arm bikes! Leg/glute room Personal training - I was actually very pleased to see the private trainings going on while I was here. Most gyms these days have kids who just passed the test and spend more time watching themselves in the mirrors than their clients. All trainers I observed seemed very dedicated to their clients and their own personal fitness as well. I can't stand seeing trainers who don't do/look like the work or follow the knowledge they give their clients. Professional and not wearing skimpy clothing like most influencer trainers. World Gym mixed with a YMCA. Extremely welcoming community, where you will see people working hard to fulfill their fitness goals. Any gym that lets pups in is my kind of place. For my serious lifters out there, the gym has: Dumbbells that go up to 170. 3 power cages, 3 platforms, with two additional squat racks. A Nordic curl, GHR, reverse hyper and PitShark. Two 45 degree leg presses and one vertical. Ex-posing room which is now a lower-body (or "glute-centric") room. Various sleds, tires, sandbags, etc. 40 yards of turf. Rows of cardio machines: several treadmills and stair-mills, with two assault bikes and two rowers also included. Seemingly all that you need to accomplish your fitness goals. Strongly recommended. One of the top gyms in the Scottsdale/Old Town Area! Being a member for over 1 year, I had to cancel due to moving away.. Huge variety of weights and machines. A 40 yard Turf is available for sleds, sprinting, Tires, Box Jumping, or whatever workout you seem fit. Next to the Turf are 3 Olympic Platforms and many other varieties of equipment. This review is about my experience working with trainer Tiffany LeRoy. The gym itself is amazing, all the staff are so kind and helpful. The only reason I am giving a 1-star review is because my recent interaction with Tiffany LeRoy. She has been my personal trainer for over a year, and everything had been amazing up until today. I always pay up front for one month of training, sometimes two months, because she insists upon this and makes it her standard. I had to cancel my training because I am moving out of state in a few days. This has been an unexpected move to say the least, and I have MANY unused training sessions which she has refused to give me my upfront payment back for services NOT rendered. Rather, she said that if I want any of my money, I'll have to enroll in her online personalized training!? This does NOT sit well with me. I paid her up front for over a year and I am moving out of state, and she insists on keeping my money for services not rendered...not professional at ALL. Be hesitant of paying trainers up front, especially this one! She has made a few of the girls upset in the past that I've trained with and now I see why they are no longer training with her. Note: I see another gentleman wrote similar review about having to cancel for unforeseen circumstances and a trainer deciding to just pocket the money for services unrendered. Just keep in mind that if any emergencies come up like an illness, force to move, death in the family and you can no longer go - meaning if any LIFE situations come up - and you need to cancel your training before having used your sessions, you will NOT get a dime back. I do not appreciate having the feeling I'm being taken advantage of especially after spending so much time with someone, let alone money. I've learned a HUGE lesson here. Unethical & unprofessional business dealings by this trainer! Additionally, she began to grab my arm and stand in front of me as I tried to exit the gym and skip out on my last session, which I was so excited about. Awesome gym! Tons of equipment, we found out from one of the owners (Derek) they had some custom made equipment! The energy in the gym is insane too! Everyone is there to get a good workout! No judgement, no weird looks; come in and do you The bathrooms were wonderful as well; clean, good spacing, lockers- they don't provide locks (but they have cameras everywhere), always stocked! This gym is awesome. A true lifting paradise! I'm not local to the Scottsdale area but come here for work throughout the year and always workout here. They partner with local hotels and allow hotel guest to workout here with doing a "free trial" or listening to a high-pressure sales pitch when you're just trying to workout. The staff is very friendly and gave me a tour of the facilities and even informed me that they have straps, liquid chalk, bands and everything you could possibly need for you to borrow and use just simply ask the front desk. I used to love this gym - but I am over trying to find a place amongst the herd of group classes. "trainers" take up multiple work stations at once, leaving the rest of us without equipment. Masks? Ha! Forget that! Even when it was mandated they didn't care. Now it's optional and no one cares. Hours have not been changed back to 4am since post pandemic, and closed on Sunday's. Basically if you want to be part of a herd class and not follow health guidelines - this is the gym for you! Sadly - the gym itself is a good gym - it's the selfishness of most people inside that ruin it. FYI - I am in as soon as they open (5am) and STILL deal with issues. Update to Five Stars! It's with much sadness, that I cancel my membership because I am moving out of state, but I update my review to five stars because of some improvements the club has made since my joining: 1. Drinking fountains now dispense ice cold water. If for some reason they don't, they have a fridge full of cold, bottled water for you. 2. The AC blows cold air. Awesome sauce. 3. The hours are now 24/7 during the week. Very convenient! Cancelling my membership was not a massive ordeal. I came in, met with Jay, and told him what was up. No guilt trip, no upsell, no douchy sales pitch like the one people get at LA Fitness or 24 Hour. I'm sure I will come in and work out at this gym on my visits to Scottsdale. My wife and I have been a customers here for a long time. Amazing personal trainers, great staff, great facility. Welcoming. Cool vibe. My biggest complaint is the owner just seems to reject constructive customer feedback. Several members (including me) have asked numerous times (for years) for a water fountain that includes a bottle filler (a pretty standard gym amenity these days, even at the low cost box gyms). The request seems to fall on deaf ears, or the staff is just worried that funneling the concern up to the owners will cause issues. Otherwise would be a 5 star review. read more

This review is about my experience working with trainer Adrian Miranda. He was reliable until I purchased a larger block of sessions from him. He then became much less reliable, cancelling me on just a couple hours' notice multiple times. I expressed regret about buying so many sessions (literally just texted that I shouldn't have bought so many) and he threw a tantrum and decided he would no longer train me, despite still owing me for 9 sessions. He then refused to refund me in full, because, get this, I had cancelled him upon learning I was positive for COVID. Like ya, sorry I chose not to expose your unvaccinated self to COVID. So he felt this entitled him to keep my money. Classy. As for Independence Gym, when I brought this to their attention, they didn't even bother to respond. I would definitely suggest avoiding training with Adrian based on my abysmal experience. read more

I just recently moved to the Phoenix area and my girlfriend and I wanted to check out a new gym. For some context, we do mostly powerlifting, so this review is written with that in mind. I called beforehand and the associate assured me that this was a powerlifting gym but if you're serious about strength training this gym might not be for you. Pros -Cheap: It's only $30ish a month and the first visit was free -Lots of machines and heavy DBs up to 160s -Turf area with sleds/tires/KBs -Deadlift platforms Cons -Bar quality: When I called the guy assured me that there were plenty of power bars. When I got there all the bars on the benches were cheap bars with hardly any knurling. There may have been some Texas power bars hiding somewhere but it was so crowded I couldn't imagine trying to look for one. -Bench quality: These were cheap, cushion-y benches and I couldn't get a tight set-up at all. No powerlifting quality forza benches here. In conclusion, this is basically a 24 hour fitness with a couple extra goodies. If I were looking for just a casual gym this would go to 3 stars and if the people weren't as rude it would go to 4 stars. It's a shame that they have some nice equipment but cheaped out on bars/benches which are some of the more important pieces of equipment. I wouldn't have been so annoyed if I hadn't called beforehand but maybe there was just a difference in standards between this gym and an actual lifting gym. If you are a casual lifter or value a lower price point than give it a go, just be sure to have headphones in and a death stare during peak times. If you're looking for better quality, you might want to look elsewhere. -No bags on the gym floor so I constantly had to go back to my bag in the cubbies which was a minor annoyance -Super crowded: We had to wait 30 minutes for one of the 3 benches and we were constantly being eyed by others waiting for a bench. They could spring for some more (and better) benches with it being so crowded during peak times. I also had to wait an additional 30 minutes to get a bar for strict pressing -Rude people: It seemed 90% of people there thought they were the greatest people in the world. No respect for personal space, people grabbing weights from the rack while pressing, tons of glaring/peacock-ing from small dudes, etc. At one point I was going to ask for a spot for my top set at 345 and then realized the guy was about to go so I stopped myself and he just stood there looking at me like I was stupid before asking this other kid to spot me who could barely give me a lift off. read more

This review isn't as much for independence gym as it is for one of the "trainers" working there, Geeny Hanjuko http://fitnessgeeny.com/ The reason I put the title of "trainer" in quotes is that that title really doesn't do Geeny justice. She's so much more than just a personal trainer. Each session with Geeny is more like a personal physical therapy session. As both an elite athlete and a medical professional who had taught anatomy and physiology, I'm amazed at Geeny's knowledge and proficiency in recognizing anatomical/skeletal/muscular imbalances and in her keen ability to work out a thoughtful plan to help correct those postures/issues in a safe and healthy manner. As an athlete who often suffers injuries, Geeny can really fill the gap between finishing physical therapy (simply becoming functional again) to getting strong enough to compete. This is a unique niche in recovery and training that is often overlooked. read more

I've waited a month since joining here to write a review and even now I still feel that I'll never be able to give a truly proper review because every time I go I feel like I find a new piece of equipment or accessory. First off, some people claim that this is not a "beginner gym." This is ridiculous as any gym - whether in your back yard, a MMA gym, garage gym, a crossfit gym, Gold's Gym, or Independence - is what you make it. You can do "simple" or "difficult" things at any gym so to say that is is only for the elite, trainers, or the supper ripped is beyond silly. The true fact of the matter is that there are so many different people at this gym doing so many different things with so many different goals that you can't say Independence is this or that. I've seen it all. The only thing I can say is that I personally find the patrons of this gym seem to be very dedicated to obtaining their goals, whatever that may be. In my life I've worked out at my high school gym, Mountainside, 24-hour, my garage, Planet Fitness, and Independence. My personal judgement of a gym is almost based on one thing - how many squat racks do you have? Independence has three full racks with platforms, two A-frame squat racks, and two smith squat machines. Furthermore they also have a whole litany of squat-variation/leg machines (multiple leg presses, standing leg press, vertical leg press, etc). I'm a bit of purist so for my purposes there are five squat racks. One thing that is cool/unique about this place is that three of the racks also have platforms with them so technically two people can work out (even squat) on the same rack. Most of the time it is one person in the squat rack and maybe someone on the platform doing deadlifts. In a nutshell - if you like free weights, to do squats, compound movements, or full Olympic lifts then this is probably one of the few gyms you can do it at. If you like machines, this place also has a whole slew of machines too. I'm not into machines, so I can't really comment on them aside from the fact that there are a lot of different ones from the Hammer Strength type to the cable type to the body weight type (e.g. dip/pull/chin assist machine). Plenty of cardio equipment on hand from treadmills, to elliptical, to a Concept2 Rower, to stair climbers, to upright bikes, to recumbent bikes, to a stationary arm bike. Not as many as other clubs but I've never seen a certain type of equipment completely booked up (i.e. all the treadmills taken). Odds-and-ends: medicine balls with handles, large leather medicine balls, and slam balls. Mace-bells. Tires. Heavy punching bag. Jump ropes. Resistance bands, Pulling bands. Stretching bands. Metal plyoboxes. Soft plyoboxes (stackable). Exercise/balance ball. Half balance ball. TRX trainer (x2). Wide variety of kettlebells. Foam rollers. Weighted bars. And even a whole-body vibration exercise machine. Of course I cannot forget the turf area. This is prowler land. There are three prowlers and (I think) three sleds. There is also a whole group of tires to flip. Overall, this is a great gym. Everyone is dedicated and friendly. I honestly can't state everything this gym has as I'm still finding new things. STUFF YOU MIGHT NOT FIND AT OTHER GYMS: - Lifting/Deadlift platforms with bumper plates - Turf area - Prowlers and sleds - Tires - TRX - Concept2 Rower - Stationary arm bike - Posing room - Multiple types of medicine/slam balls - Undulation/battle rope (two girths) ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT: - Stretching mats could be replaced with ones that are easily wiped down (will probably be black where your body touches them) - Men's locker room is kind of goofy. Order goes locker room, bathroom, and showers in back. So you either have to get naked and walk through bathroom or just do all changing in shower - More room for gym bags (they aren't allowed on gym floor so you keep them up in a cubby hole in front of the cardio area) - Slightly wider turf area. Turf area is by far the most crowded area with people doing plyo boxes, prowlers, sprints, farmer walks, lunges, sliders, and warmups (there is a separate area for stretching). - Bands/chains for sleds (I bought my own since eventually I'll probably go back to a home gym. There might be some somewhere, but I haven't found them). - Specific grip strength training machines (I'm getting picky here with my wish-list). - Slightly lower monthly membership fee. REASONS YOU SHOULD NOT GO TO THIS GYM: - You need multiple locations - You are offended at people wearing clothing that shows off their body - You are offended at people occasionally dropping weights on a rubber platform - You are offended at people occasionally grunting/making noise - You are offended at people looking at themselves in the mirror - You demand that you area able to get on cardio equipment and have 15 spaces between you and the next person - You demand that the place have AC blasting at 55F (they seem to use BigAssFans to keep the place cool read more

Review is for one of the trainers Ryan Johnson (surge strength). Have trained with him for about a month. Professional and serious guy always on time and plans each session etc. He doesn't d*** around and start talking to his buddies in the gym during your reps. The training is intense and tiring. I'm paying a lot for me but it is worth the money and I would recommend it to anyone who is serious and doesn't want to deal with salesman types. The gym staff seem pretty cool too. This was my favorite gym, worked out here for roughly ten years. Back even when it was powerhouse gym. I moved a few years and told them to cancel my membership. People at the front desk said no problem. Moved back to the area and came in today to rejoin. Front desk told me I had a balance of 88 dollars since I didn't close my account properly. I explained what happened and that I did close my account both the front desk people just stared at me. I decided to pay the remaining money I supposedly owed them for good faith. Best part they tell me I can have a free one day pass which is laughable or I can pay a 100 down and 34.99 a month to rejoin. Sorry until the customer service gets better and they understand that every customer counts I'll spend my money and drive a few more miles to a place that appreciates their customers!!!!!! read more
