Found this place while searching for a place to eat dinner in the Jordaan area. Small 20-25 seater restaurant and it was packed the whole time we were there. The menu is fairly extensive and has a good selection of vegetarian and non vegetarian dishes. The onion bhaji was really nice albeit slightly doughy and the samosas had a good taste. We had four vegetarian mains to share and they were all quite tasty and the rotis were also freshly made. Good food decent service and would happily come here again. The food was flavorful and the spice level was perfect (we like spicy!) It was some of the best Indian food we've ever had. The service was initially good but as the meal went on it dropped off. This was by far some of the best Indian food I've ever had in my life. As an Indian myself, I never know what to expect and often I'm disappointed but this literally blew my mind. I wish I could experience taking my first bite again. I would live in Amsterdam just so I could eat here every so often. Our hotel made an 8 pm reservation for us; I know it was made as I was standing right there. However when we arrived our name was not on the list. We were shoved by the front door while others without reservations also were seated quickly. The front door kept hitting me and every time someone came in they left the door open blasting me with cold air. My daughter ordered the matter paneer and it was very good. I ordered the mixed grill appetizer and naan . The mixed grill was rock hard pieces of meat with an overwhelming masala and oil smothering it. The two pieces of shrimp were ok. The naan was decent. Disappointing last experience in Amsterdam. EVERY other meal was over the top fantastic at every restaurant we picked. read more

The prawn biryani was quite tasty, decent amount of spice but not overbearing and served with a side of raita. Kulcha was done very nicely as well, had a little bit of doughiness to it but not too much. Service was good. So, our friends who live here insisted on taking us here despite the fact that we're in Amsterdam on our first night. Since my friend has a reliable palette I thought hey, why not give it a shot. Samosa- 5 stars. This is the best samosa I've had in my life. The outside pastry was different from any pastry I've had. It almost tasted like a paratha dough and not the typical samosa dough I've had. Chicken tikka masala- 3 stars. I'm a huuuuge chicken tikka masala fan. At every Indian restaurant this is the only dish I order so I like to think that I know my masala action. This dish didn't taste like a chicken tikka masala that I'm used to but was still good. Lamb dish that looks like fajita plate- 5 star (says my husband) he couldn't believe how good this dish was. Potato dish- 5 star. Sorry I am butchering the names of these dishes as I dont't rememberer what it was called but this was bomb diggity. I usually skip ordering this dish but it was unbelievably delicious. Order it spicy because it's amaaaaazing. Some other dishes that I have a photo of but can't name as my friend ordered them all. Very good. I highly recommend is place and the cobra beer was pretty dang good as well. Great job, Amsterdam! Who knew I'd find the best Indian food I've had in my life in this country of all places. This place was amazing. I don't even know where to start. The samosas were sheer perfection. The pastry was flaky and delicious. The chicken tikka masala was spicy but not overpowering. The flavor was so well rounded. The lamb was tender and yummy. Again, the flavors were so well balanced. And everything else was equally delicious. The nan bread was fluffy and crispy - I'm not sure how they managed both. I'd certainly return without question. read more

Was looking for good Indian food with family in Amsterdam- saw the reviews and gave it a try. Sure glad we did- this place is family owned with super authentic Indian food. I tried the Chicken Jalfrazi which was tender and flavorful and also the Lamb Biryani, Palak Paneer (Spinach) with Garlic Naan and Tandoori Roti were nice and crispy. I ordered the paneer masala! The fresh cardomon and otherthings i couldnt describe left me dreaming about this place. The portions were excellent in that food for one is just that. The naan was just enough for one person. Not that i dont love leftovers i think the quality was so good that they kept it at just enough for one person. I ordered flads of wine which was ok. when i think of indian food, i think of the food served by my dad's colleagues or restaurants in nyc and boston which are full of spices and textures. shahjahan's food is definitely not what comes to mind. first of all, the service: i like water. i like water A LOT. in fact, i'll take water over practically any drink, any day. the waitress was pissy about my request for water, in spite of my partner drinking other things. she showed her displeasure over and over again. second: the menu. we went to the veggie section, and there were two dishes with spinach & paneer with the exact same description in dutch and english. my partner and i stared at it, and decided on the dish which we didn't recognize. i turned out to be a creamy tomato soup with cheese cubes -- no sign of saag, sweet like canned campbell's tomato soup. third: the taste of the food was overly sweet. it might have been a localization i was not prepared for; it is not a set of flavors for people from big american cities used to more savory tastes. fourth: did i mention the service? we asked to take home the food we didn't finish. she said "take out, ok," and proceeded to pile the plates on top of each other. bitch. we should not have left as much tip as we did. i'd give it one star, but the space was clean and welcoming. i will not be back, tho. read more

Best indian food I've ever eaten! My friends and I actually wanted to try a Mexican restaurant around the corner, but they weren't open yet (Dinner not until 7? Strange). Hungry and determined, we stumbled upon this quaint looking restaurant in the middle of a quiet neighborhood. Both my friends were wary about indian food, given that it was their first time, and I wasn't looking to be impressed...I mean, how good could an indian restaurant be in Holland? OMG. Stereotypes be damned, it was very delicious. We all ordered the dinner for one and it was amazing how much food you got for 26 euros! We were so stuffed we practically had to waddle our way back towards de dam. Our server was quite kind and prompt. Also be sure to try the almond ice cream. It is wonderful. read more

Was in a day trip to Amsterdam. I had a lamb briyaani and it was very good. I tried many so-called Indian restaurants outside india (vegas and ny). This briyaani / food was so good. This looks like a family owned restaurant with a professional chef. So that might be a reason that I felt the food tasted like Indian. Owner was friendly and food came bit delayed. The best Indian food I have eaten. We were walking around looking for a spot to eat, and figured Indian food wasn't a bad idea on a cold night. Best decision we've made lately! We had the appetizer sampler (Shahjahan platter), and each item was delicious. For our main courses, we took the advice from our server and each had a chicken dish (chicken tikka rezala and chicken tikka bhuna). Both were absolutely amazing. The garlic naan was more garlicky than I'm used to (my husband loved it though), but I ordered the onion naan, and was very pleased. I usually devour the naan, but it was almost an afterthought to the meal, because the main dishes were so good. We left very full, and very satisfied!!
