I was really surprised to see a Saravana Bhavan here as I was driving through the neighborhood. The menu is broader than the locations in the San Francisco Bay Area. However, the food and locations were lower grade. The chutneys and sambhar were watery and the dosas tasted different and not as good. The windows are way overdue for a cleaning. Pass. read more

One of the better Sarvana Bhavans to be honest. Delicious onion rava masala dosa and uthapum. Filter coffee had the exact amount of sugar we needed and the mysoor masala dosa was perfectly spicy. Definitely recommend if your in the area. The service was kinda bad though, we asked for spoons, the waiter brought 2 when she can clearly see there is 4 of us. Same thing with the napkins and water. I came here solely thanks to my lovely banker at ABN Amro who told me about this place. So with my dad in town as well as a visiting colleague who likes South Indian food, we made our way here and luckily it was after the busy lunch period on a Sunday (around 2pm-ish) so we only had a 5 min wait before getting shown to a table. So if you are a fan of South Indian food, or vegetarian, this place is nirvana! Hands down, the best, softest, most buttery idlis I have ever tasted! Cant recommend enough getting the Mini-Idli appetizer! The Rava Kitchdi too was delicious, but a bit too spicy for me. My dad got the spinach masala (and a part of me was thinking.. oh-kay, really? but it was massively delish and a food-combo that I thought was totally genius after I tasted it! My colleague who got the Mysore Masala dosa was expecting it to be hot aka lots of chili's but found it a bit tame, and I agreed with his assessment - it wasnt spicy at all! We ended our meal with some South Indian Coffee, and this just totally hit the spot and was a great way to end our meal. Really good, truly (seemingly) authentic Indian! Our waiter offered some suggestions which helped me because I am always really indecisive with extensive menus. I ended up ordering their special platter for 1, which included at least 5 different types of curries, yogurt sauces, cheese, two types of bread and white rice. Even better? You can get as much rice and curry as you want. This was amazing but also deadly because I ate so much and was SOOOO full after. But it's ok because it was hearty and delicious. So come hungry! Also, be prepared to get messy! The real way to eat this is with your HANDS. Though they do give you a spoon, you're supposed to eat with your hands. It really does make the food taste better. No clue why there is such a hype about this place. Even being extremely generous, this please could potentially be a decent south(south Indian, not north or such mind you) Indian food. Basically IF you are not from south India, You will not like this food. Bland, very odd taste(I am a north Indian, raised In Holland) and somewhat undercooked. One of the things I ordered was an Onion masala Dosa, wow...the potatoes were blend with unseasoned, undercooked, very thickly chopped, oily Onions. I could not finish it out of disgust. Shole Bhatura, Blend shole, my wife could not finish it so reluctantly I had. Sambal vada( whatever the hell it was). Oh lord, the worst. I had to send it back after 2 bites. Although they charged me and I paid them without asking why they charged for 2 damn bites. Ah well. Go there IF you are a Stanger to Adam (I was "recommended" this place). Final words, stick to non-chain restaurants and stay away from this "shit Bhavan". read more

**Update. They say third times the charm and I managed to be charmed on my second go and I'm back for more. It's a southern Indian restaurant. Order the southern Indian specialities. All of the dosas are good to go! ***Earlier Review. I love Indian food. Or whatever I know of as Indian food. Butter chicken? Mango chutney? Garlic naans? Yes, yes and yes. But you can't get any of that here! Ha! Sorry kids! The restaurant is listed as vegetarian / vegan - but with lots of ghee, cheese and yoghurt in certain dishes, you'll need to ask just to be sure. Anyway, after hearing some rumblings and riding past a few times, I went with an English friend who is still struggling to find excellent Indian food (like the stuff you'd find in London) in Amsterdam after 5 years of living here. Since it was just the two of us, we got really lucky and snagged a table straight away. From our seat by the window, it was great to see lots of Indian families and groups here just getting amongst it. We could also see big groups milling about waiting for a table so there was a tiny bit of guilt too but that was soon replaced with wonder and curiosity of the giant giant menu! I specifically took a photo of everything we ate, as well as a description of it on the menu- because I'm hoping it helps people to choose what may (or may not) be more suited to. For our entree we had the curd vada. It was light and also served cold. I'd never had it before and it was lovely. Naans? The butter one was good. Piping hot, fluffy, crisp and slightly charred. Excellent. Same as their papadums! Didn't get to try their others but.. Next time! No onion bhajis as the chef with that specialty is on their way. So again, next time!! Mango lassi? Good. Sweet and light and delightful. Their speciality Southern Indian thali allowed us to get a sense of the curries they made (they explained the Southern is more saucy and the Northern is more vege) and it was great to get taste a bit of everything. We also had to order a dosa (what they're famous for being a Southern Indian restaurant and all..) as we watched a bunch of them floating past and it was pretty good. Piping hot and crispy on the outside and warm and gooey with cheese and potatoes in the center. Then the last dish we had was the palak paneer, nice and squeaky with the cheese, with a nice even balance of flavours. My English friend said to me at some point during the big and plentiful meal, that although everything was lovely and authentic- metal plates and all, it was just missing something in how everything tasted. I had to say I agreed with him but I was also quite a hungover so I'm willing to come back again to tackle the giant menu like some crazy game! The best thing for me at this restaurant was the feeling you get the minute you walk in. It's not like any other restaurant in Amsterdam (as far as I could tell from everywhere I've been). The feel and vibe is so so alive and refreshing! It has a food hall feel with lots of sounds of people, music, food eating and enjoyment. It kind of made the day for me! Saravanaa Bhavan is noticeably benefitting from a certain type of hype. The challenge with such hypes often is two-fold: A) It creates expectations that in most cases cause some sort of disappointment; and B) the team running such a hyped place runs the risk of becoming complacent. The Amsterdam branch to me definitely needs to overcome the challenge of complacency (B). Especially to better live up to guests' expectations (A). The first time I tried Saravanaa Bhavan was a take away. Quality of the food is indeed quite good, it's light and fresh and you feel good after a meal. However the portions are small to an extent where one struggles to see the value for money. Then there was a second visit, a dine-in with visitors that I wanted to treat with an invitation. The let-down was real! - restaurant as cold as a fridge (we wore our jackets) - dishes served in random order - two orders wrong on a super quiet evening - staff showing up with the bill 10 mins into the meal - staff trying to clear the table twice whilst we still ate - portions also too small when dining in the restaurant The team is friendly, but except for the food the whole experience was far from being a great experience and a treat for my guests. There's nothing worse than knowing you took your visitors to a place they didn't enjoy. Two stars instead of just one only because the food tastes really good. I won't come back and look for an alternative. Hope they sort out the hype-induced complacency and step up their game a bit. Not recommended. read more

Great South Indian food that doesn't skimp on the spice or flavours! Very happy to eat something with actual taste after eating bland Dutch food for so long. The Dosa (flat pancake) was delicious. This is not the best saravanaa bhavan out there. We had tea and dosas and although the dosas were good they weren't very authentic, parts of ours actually tasted like pringles chips. The tea was disturbingly bad however, the worst I've had in my life. Something must've curdled or been burnt, so hopefully that was just a one time problem. If you're curious or just really love this restaurant, then I'd try it, but don't expect the same food that other locations provide. read more

I had heard about this legendary Indian vegetarian restaurant from my ex-boyfriend who went in New York. A few months back I heard it was opening in Amsterdam, so we were amongst the first to try it out. I normally eat Northern Indian food so this was my first time with South Indian cuisine. We had the dosas, which are the specialty. I don't have anything to compare to, but they didn't blow my mind. My ex-boyfriend seemed happy but not overly enthusiastic. I didn't see or experience the craziness that others have described with the line and waiting, but at several points during the meal there was a very calm and controlled line. Because of the line they do rush you a bit in and out. It's not a calm, laidback place you take a date, but I think for a solid, cheap meal it's a fairly good choice. Food was great and the taste was the same as any other Saravana Bhavan across India. Three stars is because of the service and management. During the 1 hour we were there, we saw 3 other customers complain about the service and leave dissatisfied. Very unorganized, there seemed to be no rules on who is taking the orders for which table. I would never come here again or advise anyone who is really hungry to go here. The service would really upset 'hangry' people. read more

I do really like this Vegetarian indian restaurant, fast service, decently priced, huge menu and flavourful meals - however, they make everything in bulk and nothing is super fresh, we actually got some of our meals luke warm and not hot. Indian cuisine with Dutch service - what's not to dislike! This is one of the most awaited restaurants ever in Amsterdam, and it has to be, for Saravana Bhavan, the chain, takes pride in being known as the world's best vegetarian food chain. This is evident from the long lines out the door that persist long after the doors have opened for the evening. Once inside, the dining hall is spacious, although a bit too congested with minimal spacing between tables. The layout is really a bit funky. They also seem to have a waiting area although I don't think it was being used. The lines get so crazy that I had a hard time pushing my way out after we were done with our dinner. Service is mostly quick, although I did have to wait exceptionally long for one of my orders towards the end. They also occasionally seemed to be getting lost figuring out which table ordered what as the waiters were scrambling around trying to make sense. As remarked by V, the crowd was full of happy people glad to dine on their favorite cuisine! The menu is HUGE. You will find all kinds of vegetarian (and vegan) fare along with desserts. They seemed to have a full bar at the corner although we never received a menu specifically for the drinks. But then, when you are here, you get food, not drinks, anyway! All that said, I welcome this new fully vegetarian spot in the city, and do hope that things get really better once they overcome their teething issues. I will definitely go back! read more

I thought this was quite good -- it tasted much more authentic than most of the Indian restaurants in this country, but according to my Indian friend it needs help. The decor is interesting -- purple neon in the ceiling made me instantly recall a seedy nightclub. We had a cauliflower dish that was pretty interesting. I thought it was well seasoned, but my friend thought it was too saucy. We also had some sort of flathead with a chickpea curry. First off.. I am from chennai, India where this chain originated. Their menu here almost exactly is what you get in Chennai (except the beer! ). The south indian menu items taste exactly like it does in Chennai. It is about as authentic as you can get. Do not order any of the usual Indian restaurant dishes here like - naan, paalak paneer etc. They are not good at it and you will be disappointed. I visited this place with a bunch of friends from work and ordered south indian. All of those were excellent. We did get a couple of other indian dishes and it was a mistake. Food is great and tastes like home, if you know what to order. Waiters need to help with it. 1 less star for the service. They were hurried and in constant rush. read more

Many many options, all vegetarian, and made by actual south indian cooks who were specially hired from India the owner told me. Where to begin...? Located at a busy corner in an old bank this place is still somewhere where you leave your money and get very little in return, but irritation. Avoid it at all costs! Menu is very long and seems to carry everything from India, China, Thailand, and so on... However, all dishes seem to share the same strong South Indian spices so do not expect much variety there - in other words - do not bother reading through, because all will taste more or less the same! Regarding the staff, as another reviewer indicated, very nice but not very efficient, as often is the case around here. There is a flurry of managers walking around the already jammed space between tables giving often contradictory instructions that make things even more chaotic. They simply were not able to get our order straight after 45 minutes! Food was brought to us that was meant for other tables and the funny part was that no one seemed to know exactly which dish they were bringing. Ultimately, we ended up walking out after paying for the only thing we ate - a lentil pancake for children freshly defrosted in a microwave and surround by extremely spicy sauces that our starving 8 year old was unable to stomach. Given the Indian options around it, this is a place that is really not worth it! read more

The best South Indian food one can ever get. Their Ghee Idli is the best in all. I tired Uttappam, South INdian Thali, Dahi vada, Sambhar vada..All these were very good. I didn't like their Veg Biryani much. I would highly recommend them for South Indian Food. Its a must go. read more
