If you want to create an authentic Indian meal, or pick up a hard to find treatment, this is the place to bhangra your butt in to. New India Market has an excellent range of products which are imported regularly and kept up to date. If you are longing for a particular ingredient that you just can't find elsewhere, it'll be here. The staff are friendly and helpful and can direct you to what you're after. The one drawback is that certain items the staff only know the sub-continental word for the item. I spent forever trying to explain frankincense before giving up, then again if I'd asked for something more common they'd probably know what I was on about, and when I asked for a certain kind of coconut milk they instantly directed me. This store capably accommodates a few other groups outside of Indian food enthusiasts--Pakistanis, Fijian Indians, Sri Lankan and Pacific Islanders as well as coeliacs. Being half-Samoan, my parents often head to New India Market for their Islander wares as palusami, taro, yams, cassava and the savoury banana chips. There are also a lot of beauty items direct from India which aren't easy to come by like real coconut oil (for body and hair) and neem (a natural Clearasil). As Indian food here is mainly based on non-gluten products, coeliacs have hit the jackpot with the New India Market and can stock up on many snacks and food items. Not only can you purchase ingredients but you can purchase the certain items and utensils for preparing those ingredients. Of all the many products, my favourite product from here are the cans of pink Tuna "Wahoo" which tastes phenomenal and quite different from Australian canned Tuna. Yum!

My expansive spice cabinet has much to thank Indian Plaze on Glynburn Road. Previously the shop was across the way in the old DMV complex, and it is where I bought my first batch of spices to experiment with many moons ago. The shop look may have changed, but the content is still spicy goodness! Of course there are many other things on offer other than the spices, but that is what I go for so I generally just brush over the rest!

As it's located right next door to 24fit, I'll usually visit the shop after I've had a workout at the gym. The smell of the spices as you walk through the door is enough to knock your socks off! I love coming in to browse the various kinds of spices, rice, curry mixes and snacks. If I feel like I've deserved it, I'll even pick up a couple of bags of savoury Indian snacks - they are simply awesome, and probably much healthier than potato chips (another vice of mine). In addition to food, the shop also stocks a lot of Indian cosmetics and remedies, such as oils, soaps, fragrances, and hair dyes. Products such as pure coconut oil provide great natural remedies for those with particularly thick, damaged or difficult hair - and you won't have to worry about putting any unnecessary chemcials on your head.

Prices were not on display for all items but at the checkout they seemed reasonable. I was not asked if I needed help and only upon purchasing did I ask for extra items which I was then shown. There was a large range of grains in various sizes and spice pre mixes. I could see the huge prepared food range in the fridges and there was a small freezer section. I couldn't see any fresh produce. Even though he didn't have a small bottle of mustard oil on hand I'll be back due to the large variety of products on offer.

Be prepared to navigate through aisles and fellow shoppers within elbow range. It can be a pain if you're not in the mood and just want to get in and out with your groceries. The service is quite good though, and the staff are generally helpful. I was a bit disappointed with the limited range of Indomie, my favourite two-minute noodle brand. They only had three flavours. They do, however, sell Mi Goreng for around $12 for a box of 40. This place isn't bad and is open later than other Asian grocery stores around Chinatown, but for a wider range of stock I would recommend shopping around at those other stores.

Whether it be vegetables, noodles, drinks, snacks, you name it - they'll probably have it somewhere in there. The aisles are a little narrow, so expect a lot of shuffling past confused shoppers. They recently also started selling macarons in-store - they're incredibly colourful and they seem to have a large range of different flavours. I'll remember to ask them next time if they're homemade - I can't resist a homemade macaron!

Always fresh this simple range is very competitively priced. Specialist Asian Greengrocer is slowly expanding their variety as the owners find their feet and are getting a feel for their clientele's tastes and desires. Much more convenient (if you're in the market than crossing the road) and much more reliably fresh ensured by a high and quick turnover. I now make this little convenient grocer my go-to for ginger, coriander, chillies, kaffir lime leaves, bok choy and the like.

Any kind of herb for a dolla a huge bunch and a small variety of things like bok choy, purple potatoes and other Asian greens also cheap. Service is always quick, friendly enough and I can normally fill a bag of beautiful fresh produce here for $20 that will last at least a week or so in the fridge.

What sets this grocery store apart from the others is: firstly, the incredible variety of different foods they have in store and; secondly, the fresh vegetables they stock for use in Asian cooking. When you first walk into the store, you'll notice that the entire front area of the shop is occupied by large tables displaying a variety of vegetables, roots and other ingredients. Best of all, it all appears to be very fresh. The thing I really like about this shop is that, in addition to an assortment of Asian foods, they also have a huge range of cooking utensils at the back of the shop. There are hundreds of wooden steamers and other utensils ideal for Asian cooking, which is convenient if you happen to require any of those things in order to turn your groceries into an oriental delight for dinner.

I know, that seems rather odd doesn't it, but I do think there's a discount on some greens if you know the language let me put it that way. I almost always would pop in here to get my odds and ends for laksa and noodle soups or stir fry because it is not as busy as most of the other Asian groceries around, and yet they do have a steady flow of customers - not so many tourists I think!

It does help if you speak Cantonese or Mandarin, but the owners are equally conversant in English. Rows of fresh greens and melons, noodles, and chinese sausages, aswell as spices and condiments; and around at the far end, all the kitchen utensils you might want for your own dinner party experience. There is even a wall selection of Asian DVDs if it tickles your fancy. Yue Kee's is cheaper than the other Chinatown highstreet supermarkets and as mentioned in a previous review, not as busy. But I'll tell you why. Their main customers are actually the many restaurants in and outside of Chinatown. They get up very early in the morning, buy in bulk and deliver goods in their bright yellow van. If you stand around long enough you will see local restaurant owners popping in for those last minute ingredients before they open up shop. Quality goods at very good prices. Treat it as your own wholesalers, as much of Gouger Street already does. Would definitely recommend this place seeing as I'm here at least once a week to refill.
