The history of Easter Seals Crossroads in Indiana starts in 1936. Mrs. William Gavin started a club…read morewith 12 people with disabilities with a primary goal of socialization. Joined by Mrs. P.R. Mallory, they would expand into creating profitable handicrafts and in 1939 the group formally organized under the Indiana Society for Crippled Children. I'll admit it. The word crippled makes me cringe. A year later, the group affiliated with national Easter Seals and acquired an office at 30th and New Jersey. They've had various offices, however, they've been settled in at 4740 Kingsway Drive (think 47th & Keystone) since 1990. Today, Easter Seals is CARF accredited (This is a big deal) and offers physical, occupational, and speech therapies for children and adolescents along with early intervention programs, augmentative communication, adult day services, employment and transition services, veteran services, home modification services, assistive technology services, and deaf services. They offer a lot. For the last three years, I've served as a jury member for Easterseals Southern California's Disability Film Challenge. This has, in turn, increased my awareness of the local organization and the marvelous work they do. Of course, getting to know Yelper Katy E. (Hi Katy!) has also helped. As an organization, I love that Easter Seals participates in Project Search, an opportunity for young adults with disabilities to get some experience in a work setting. It's kind of like an internship and it's a wonderful program. Here in Indy, Easter Seals has offices on Kingsway Drive, Thompson Road on the Southside, and Crossroads Industrial Services on the Eastside. As another review has indicated, Easter Seals is also known for letting organizations use its big 5th floor meeting room. I work for the State of Indiana and even we've used it. The offices here are well kept. The building is obviously accessible. The people who work here are passionate about what they do - trust me, you don't work at a non-profit planning to get rich. You get paid fairly (and Easter Seals is good about this), but this is something you do because you actually care. For folks with disabilities, Easter Seals Crossroads is definitely one of Indy's hidden gems and best non-profits. They do remarkable work that leads to greater independence and empowerment and life opportunities. I'm all about that!

It's located in the office park off of Keystone and 46th and houses a lot of different companies. The building is kept very clean! But not in that sterile freaky way. It also gives the impression that it is kept very secure since every person needs to sign in. My only visit is the 5th floor, off the elevator and over to the large meeting room. Everything is clean, and we have never had issues with the internet connection for presentations. I also appreciate that it is a spacious meeting room with a lot of tables and chairs in the back. No one likes to be piled on top of each Other during long meetings. Thanks for the hospitality Easter seals!

First time ever calling Maintenance they come into my apartment and take half of my water heater…read moreapart then tells me we'll get you fixed and did not come back until about 3 to 5 hours later. I left to go shopping at Walmart. I come back to my apartment and they used all of my clean towels that were hanging up and drying. They used it to clean up their mess from the water heater. My bathtub was clean and they left dirt in my bathtub where you wash yourself. They tracked dirt all through my apartment and salt due to the weather that we have been having. I do not recommend this corporation to anybody you people have just lost a tenant and probably will lose more. Buckner properties would be ashamed. If ANYBODY lives in the Cookeville TN area looking for apartments or houses or even a condo I would call and recommend BUCKNER PROPERTIES!!!! Ask to speak to Mike very nice guy.

Many unlocked doors at all hours. The "security gate" is rarely attended, and even then they do not check incoming or outgoing traffic. The staff, although friendly and tries their best, is not adequate for the sheer number of temporary and permanent residents. They also lack basic resources, like working equipment, much less modern equipment. The amenities are terrible. No wi-fi. I realize many of your patients are older, but a great deal of them are into technology and would love to use their laptops for their own entertainment. I tried to find a cart (or luggage cart) to haul some stuff to my dad while he was here (a stereo and DVD player and storage) but nothing like that is to be found. Really??? In a place where people stay and are moving in and out all of the time, similar to a hotel, you have no way to help your patients feel more at home?!?!? Ridiculous. The food, although meeting nutritional guidelines, is quite bland and mediocre. Finally, the complex itself is an endless maze of nothing making sense. Their is no central check in, so good luck finding who you are looking for. I've been trying to not write this, since their is a chance of my dad going back, but we will pick a different rehab facility next time.

My personal experience with the inpatient program was a complete waste of time. I was admitted on…read morea Thursday night, and Friday we spent the day with a mental health tech who, while very kind, didn't seem that helpful. I was there to seriously concentrate on making my life better and learning all I could, but they told us that they usually don't do anything on weekends! I was told the techs are supposed to do programming with us no matter what, but on both days the woman and then a man that were accompanying us said either "I don't do programming, so we're just going to hang out today" and "Well we can just consider this our session today" after sitting around talking. The environment truly made me feel like I was in jail, having to get the bathroom unlocked to go pee, I was on my period and I had to use a cup and throw away my tampons in the front office every time, they kept all of our hygiene items locked up. The absolutely worst part was the rooms. If you look at their webpage, they show you a great picture of a room with 2 beds, nice blankets, decorations, towels, etc. Well, I don't know which unit has that but it certainly wasn't the adult unit. We had about a 4 inch foam pad on a hard table, a non-fitted sheet on top, plastic pillows, and those hospital blankets. There wasn't anything in the room except the beds and a set of shelves for each patient. In the unit it was ALWAYS freezing, I walked around with the blanket off of my bed because you couldn't sit in the common area without being cold. Not only that, but on my second night there I asked for another blanket (I already had two, still cold!) and the guy told me he couldn't give me one. I thought he was kidding! He said we're only supposed to have one, but he would overlook that I had two. By the end of my stay, there were literally four of those blankets on my bed. Besides the living arrangements, most of the time there were only four people in the whole unit, and only one of them could speak! And there's not much of a group discussion when the other guy really loves to disagree with every single thing the tech or counselor would say. The techs were mostly very kind, but one lady said she had never been in that unit, another guy said he rarely is there. It's like they are just babysitters for the adults, when they are supposed to lead groups to teach us coping skills and such. Day 2 I asked the doctor to go home, because it felt really useless and that I couldn't sleep and all the groups sucked. He asked me to stay until the next day so they could get me started on meds. I said fine, because I WANT to get myself fixed up. He started a new medication, and the next day I said OK now can I go home? And he said no, that he couldn't write me a prescription unless I stayed until Monday. He also said that he would try to get me into a more one-on-one setting with the therapist. I did see her, and she was great, but I only got to see her once. I checked myself into this hospital after combing through the website and deciding it was time to take time off of work and get myself taken care of. However, this seems to be a pseudo-jail for violent people, because most of the patients were forced to check in there. My experience was a huge waste of time and money. The ONLY good things I got out of it were 1. a prescription for new meds and 2. the knowledge that it could always get worse--like having to live at that place.

I gave this place one star because I couldn't give it any lower of a rating. The building is…read morebeautiful and very clean. However, the staff is awful. They lost a brand new outfit that I purchased for my loved one. They never made any effort to find it or reimburse me for it. Whenever I would call to check on him, they would never give me any information on how he was doing. He came out worse than he was when he went in. The staff acts like they really don't care about the patients. This facilitate gives mental health hospitals, a bad name.
