I would categorize my experience with this business as mostly positive with a few frustrating issues. The owner is exceptionally knowledgeable when it comes to trees, academic actually. And far superior to the other companies I interviewed. I would say this was the most prominent reason I hired him. I found his crew to be extremely professional and very efficient. They all knew the order of business for the day and what the responsibilities/expectations were of each team member, even when the boss wasn't there. They worked hard and did not waste time. I would also like to add they were respectful of my property and cognizant of not damaging it with the equipment. The areas I believe need improvement are related to communication and follow-up/-through. My service was split into 2 parts and were conducted on separate days, tree removal and stump grinding, respectively due to utilities marking. Zero issues with the first day The second visit was delayed, however, and that wasn't communicated to me until the crew didn't show up. It was explained to me only when I called them after they were already several hours late. They did show up promptly the second time. The second day did run late because they had to start late which wasn't an issue for me, but it did contribute to the second issue. By the time the stump grinding was finished, the batteries on the blower were dead and the street and driveways were not able to be cleaned up. It was quite messy and bad enough that I would have gotten a ticket from my HOA. I was assured before they left that they would swing by first thing in the morning to blow them clean. I had to call 2 more times to get someone out to do it and then they still left the driveways a mess. I had to go out and sweep my driveway myself, which is an issue because my capabilities are limited. Lastly, my contract included following-up service to remove a treatment wrap on my tree six months later. It never happened. I had to go out and do it myself. Would I hire Southern Roots again? Yes, but with some caveats. I would probably interview some competitive companies first to see what they had to offer. I would also expect to have to deal with the above issues and know I would have to stay on them to follow-through. I would consider the issues I dealt with as minor and irritating, rather than a show-stopper.

There are small incidences that have occurred over time that I didn't hold against Nick as they seemed out of his control. But it has now been three weeks since he was last out at my place and no word back from him yet. Not sure what happened as I don't have an explanation as to what has led to his absence. I would say that Nick is a dependable and reliable guy up to this point. I really hate to assume that he has chosen to end his contract with me without mentioning that that is his intention. Edging not properly staked down, complete sections of my flower bed not done, and just shotty unprofessional work. 6 times I had Hudson Bros come out because their work was sub-standard. Each time I asked for them to knock on my door when they finished so that I could inspect the work. Each time, they didn't. This seems to be standard practice because they don't want to run away from the poor job they put their names behind. I now have a poorly done flower bed and much more headache than I ever wanted. My 8-month pregnant wife hired Noah to weed our landscaping beds in front of and behind our home because she couldn't do the work herself. He came by with some sort of "weed killing" solution and spent about "10-15 minutes" walking around the house and spraying. As you can see in the after photos below, Noah's solution wasn't quite tough enough to kill even the smallest weeds around our home. When we told him about this, he seemed upset about a job unfinished and ensured us he would be back to do better work. He missed scheduled revisits three separate times, all scheduled by himself and his company. As you can see in the attached photo, Noah wrote "at this point I am embarrased and will offer a refund if I don't show up tomorrow." Tomorrow came and went, and I accomplished all the weeding on my own time. Since offering the refund, Noah has completely ghosted us and we have given up on seeing any of the $125 we gave him for inept service. Very sorry to see someone treat customers with such indignity, and especially disappointing because he seemed nice in person. Please do not use this service.
