I walked in on 12/24 and asked for a title. The woman led me right to the shelf, and she handed me a new copy. I asked if she had any used, and she reported that they did not. She then told me she was sure the bookstore across the street would have a used copy, and she wasn't offended if I chose to purchase it there. It was like I fell into the film Miracle on 34th Street (i.e., customers referred to Gimbels from Macy's). I bought the title from Inquiring Minds, and I knew I had to leave a review. This was an adorable little bookstore that we stopped in (mostly to escape the horrific downpour that opened up on us) and we were glad we did! This had so much to look at, so many nooks and crannies to browse through.. lots of seating scattered throughout too if you should just wanna start a new book while there. Being spontaneous decided to drive to this bookstore and check it out! When I was home for 6 weeks due to medical, I became more interested than ever in reading so I was glad I decided to check this place out as I found and bought 4 books of psychological thrillers and murder mysteries for under $20. Its definitely weird for me to read paperbacks as I'm used to my kindle but mixing it up is fun lol. It's a really cute bookstore, a nice size with different selections of books to read. They have a good selection for parents looking for children books. It's in a cute town and makes for a nice visit to walk around. We're always on the lookout for indie bookstores whenever my boyfriend and I travel, and we heard about Inquiring Minds from a recommendation via fellow Yelp Elite member Bill Z. I'm glad we stopped in, because we ended up spending quite some time meandering around the stacks and shelves upon shelves of books! They have EVERYTHING here, but be prepared to wander around for a bit, since the organization of the store itself could be a bit more precise. However, if you're nerds like us and want to carve out some time to get lost in literature, you'll love it here! As I mentioned before, they have books for everyone, from children to adults, and for every kind of niche. I loved looking around the section on theatre books, and enjoyed browsing the collection of Shakespeare and contemporary plays. I even got to chat with a few fellow theatre makers among the stacks, and it's experiences like these that reflect how important it really is to support small bookstores like this one. Nothing better than meeting friends who enjoy the same books that you do! There is also ample seating, and the prices are affordable. Passing through New Paltz, I had a little free time to stop in here, and I was very impressed. Just what you might expect from a used bookstore in a small college town. Great collection of hardcover and paperback books, some real depth to their fiction and poetry. Overall, the books are in very good condition, at least, and well organized. I found a few first editions, priced very competitively and in excellent condition. I didn't get much into the children's section, but it looks extensive. Friendly staff. A real find. read more

It's great for customers, but probably unnerving for the owners, to have bookstores across the street from each other. I think the folks at Inquiring Minds have found the right niches to distinguish themselves here so that both stores are appealing. They have chosen a number of genres which I believe are very appealing to the folks who would live in and visit the area, including local interests, gardening, a good-sized children's section, some philosophical work, cooking, etc. The seating in the store is a bit worn but very welcoming and cozy. There was a lot of additional community-minded material in addition. You can tell they care about New Paltz here. I think the fact that this is one of several book stores in the village of New Paltz speaks well, and I will visit them all. read more

They've got books and good prices, and they made deals with SUNY New Paltz for discounts and whatnot. The only thing I wished they had was a little seating area, sometimes I like to read a few pages of the book to decide if I want to buy it and it would be nice to sit down for a second and do that. I stopped in on a whim one evening looking to buy a book or two that perhaps jumped out at me and were a good price. This store more than met my expectations. Everything is well organized and there is a wide selection of books both used and new. My favorite thing was the bundles available for dirt cheap! They are categorized by genre, and come with 5-7 books. I bought a bundle of 6 memoirs for $4! Definitely will be stopping back in to pick up some more books. read more

Loved this bookstore! Found some good reads for great prices, the cheapest being a whopping 2 bucks! I like how the store is set up - It's somewhat of a maze but I like it. They offer a wide variety of different genres and the store was not crowded when I went (which was probably prime time on a Saturday). This place is great! It's in a basement space that is perfect for a bookstore. Gifts are sprinkled throughout, but most of the space here is filled with books. There is a nice variety of everything from best sellers to kids books. They have alot in the relatively small space. One could spend hours looking and exploring. Independent bookstore with a multi-category staff-picks selection right inside the door so good that it'll be difficult to walk by it into the rest of the store, trust me. A few chairs to sit in and consider which books you'll get. Medium-sized place, and the only thing I'd change is perhaps changing the lighting to a warmer temperature (climate-temperature of store AOK). Staff are knowledgeable, professional, and personable. Whenever I go on road trips to small towns I always like to visit their local bookstores and buy a book. This was a good bookstore to visit. It had the latest new releases. The store has a major collection of children books & activities which I appreciated. They also have additional sections including self-help, psychology, LGBT, etc. I especially liked that the store didn't feel too crowded. There is plenty of space to walk around. read more

I love Inquiring Minds. The bookstore always has great new titles, and beloved well-known authors. There are couches and chairs so I feel like I can browse the pages of any book I'm considering. But by far the best part is the knowledgeable staff who will gladly recommend books based on my far flung interests. They know what to send me home with for great reading. I came in looking for a coloring book and within 5 minutes I was able to find what I was searching for. They have a great selection of coloring books (good for those with anxiety). This is truly one of my favorite bookstores ever! It's quiet and cozy. They have places to sit, so you can curl up with a book on a comfy couch. The staff here is incredibly nice and helpful, especially J! She is so sweet. They have a great selection. And if there is something that you want that they don't have, they will order it for you. The location is also great. They are right off of Main Street, just down the block from Starbucks. You can grab a cappuccino before you browse their wonderful selection!
