The staff was super friendly and helpful. I cannot wait to return! The extra exhibit with folk art was also wonderful in an eye-popping space. There is English signboards for most of the items, but it is very dry. The interactive bits and all the videos are only in Spanish. Furthermore, it is 150 pesos entry per person - quite expensive compared to the better Mexico City ones at 90 pesos! It is also quite a way out of the city center, so requires an Uber ride or driving (free parking). It shouldn't take more than 1.5 hours to finish the museum (if you skip the Spanish videos and interactive exhibits).

The MACAY galleries have A/C. Note that the museum entrance is in the middle of the high-arched corridor (Pasaje de la Revolución ) adjacent to the San Ildefonso Catheral (the oldest church in the Western Hemisphere) that connects Calle 58 with Calle 60. Though a sign at the entrance indicated a nominal admission fee, we were admitted for free, and photos without flash are permitted. If you have a daypack or other large bag, you will need to check it in at the entrance. The emphasis at MACAY is architectural design, with a nice mixture of media presented (with lots of photos). The displays are weighted heavily towards buildings in the Federal District (Mexico City). You will find works by Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo here. This famous couple had a passionate relationship, but could only take each other in limited doses. That being the case, they built his and her houses with a covered catwalk between the two homes.

It dates from 1540 and was the house of Francisco de Montejo the Younger (in Spanish "El Mozo" - the Younger). It might be the oldest building in Mérida. Although the house was rebuilt in 1850, there are many original furnishings and direct descendants of the Montejo family lived here until 1978. Four rooms (a dining room, a living room, an office and a bedroom) house a permanent exhibition of furnishings from the historic building. There is a small room that shows a short film about the history of the house, which I found really interesting and informative (in Spanish with English subtitles) and a few rooms that house temporary art exhibitions. A bank bought the building and renovated it to open it as a museum. It's free to visit, so well worth exploring! The exterior and the interior are both incredibly beautiful. I'm glad we visited it on our first afternoon in Merida last week. It - with the cathedral and the palacio on the other sides of the Plaza Grande - really helped provide me with a historical context to understand more Yucatecan and Mayan history relevant for the rest of our trip!

Here's a couple of highlights. The vases from China are super cool how and when they got there is something that you'll find yourself remembering Then there's the Limoges cup and tea set. Make sure to check each one as it has a different scene. Skip the fashion rooms unless you're into that. Make sure to check the gigantic mirror and chandler On the other side of the building is a really cool staircase and further more are B&W pictures and a relic in a sealed case ( I'm such a tease ) Have fun.

The Palacio de Gobierno is located on Merida's Plaza Grande, and I had heard it was worth a visit…read more It's true! The Palacio is a government building that houses some executive government offices and a tourist office. It was built in 1892, so the architecture is impressive. But that's not why you're there. You're there for the murals! So say buenos dias to the guards stationed out front and wander in. The large (and incredible!) murals on the main staircase and under the arcades of the inner courtyard were created between 1971 and 1974 by Fernando Castro Pacheco, a local artist and a student of Diego Rivera. Beginning in the staircase, the paintings tell the story of the ancient Maya, the Spanish conquest, the Mayan rebellion and Mexican independence, one after the other. In the "Salón de la Historia de Yucatán" upstairs, there are more large oil paintings by the artist dating from 1978, which offer a fascinating journey through the history of the Yucatán Peninsula. Free to visit, the Palacio is a must see when you're in Merida. Those murals are spectacular and are a great way to orient yourself in Yucatecan history at the beginning of a trip; I'm so glad we visited on our first day when we arrived last week!

We were the only ones there and it looks like it had been a while since they had been open. The grass was pretty tall around the train cars and the wife didn't have the shoes on to be climbing around a big boy toys so I had at it for a while. The museum of course wasn't open, neither the caboose with the train set. But I got to climb around things and take lots of pictures. If you do get in you very much have to be careful of falling through a rotted floor or having a staircase or ramp fail. Normal for the area.

If you or your family like trains, this is a must-see during your visit to Merida. For just a few…read moredollars you can see, climb on, and go in historic rail cars and locomotives from many different eras and in many styles. There is also a small library and model train in the air-conditioned gift shop. My husband had a great time taking tons of photographs. Do be careful, though, climbing on the rusted metal and old wood as it can be risky, especially for small children.
