Museo Casa Montejo is the restored home of Don Francisco de Montejo - the conqueror of Yucatán and…read morefounder of the colonial city of Mérida (Maya people lived in the city before it was Merida). It dates from 1540 and was the house of Francisco de Montejo the Younger (in Spanish "El Mozo" - the Younger). It might be the oldest building in Mérida. Although the house was rebuilt in 1850, there are many original furnishings and direct descendants of the Montejo family lived here until 1978. Four rooms (a dining room, a living room, an office and a bedroom) house a permanent exhibition of furnishings from the historic building. There is a small room that shows a short film about the history of the house, which I found really interesting and informative (in Spanish with English subtitles) and a few rooms that house temporary art exhibitions. A bank bought the building and renovated it to open it as a museum. It's free to visit, so well worth exploring! The exterior and the interior are both incredibly beautiful. I'm glad we visited it on our first afternoon in Merida last week. It - with the cathedral and the palacio on the other sides of the Plaza Grande - really helped provide me with a historical context to understand more Yucatecan and Mayan history relevant for the rest of our trip!

Here's a couple of highlights. The vases from China are super cool how and when they got there is something that you'll find yourself remembering Then there's the Limoges cup and tea set. Make sure to check each one as it has a different scene. Skip the fashion rooms unless you're into that. Make sure to check the gigantic mirror and chandler On the other side of the building is a really cool staircase and further more are B&W pictures and a relic in a sealed case ( I'm such a tease ) Have fun.

Case in point: Hubbers is very familiar with the area, and we still ended up making a wrong turn (we turned early when it was actually next door. Heh...) But it was part of our day's tour, so we were gonna end up here one way or another. If you're interested in Merida's history, this place is full of so much information. There are murals on every wall, each explaining what the pictures are depicting. We took our time reading through those as we walked through all the corridors. Next was the museum which contained tons of paintings, and like the murals, also with stories behind them. We were done in about an hour, hour and a half tops, and that's without rushing. We learned tons of interesting historical facts! The building has been around over 130 years, but there are still active/working government offices in continued use today. And the best part of this visit? IT'S FREE. A definite must stop for tourists who are interested in learning about how Merida came about. Highly recommending.

We stopped by the ruins at Ake this past week when we were exploring the area surrounding Merida…read more On our way to Izamal, we stopped at Ake, which was a very interesting comparison to Uxmal, which we had visited the day before. Uxmal is a significant attraction in the area - lots of tourists, lots of guides! When stopped by Ake, we were the only visitors! After our guide purchased our tickets to enter the site from the woman in the kiosk, we were on our own on the site! Ake's architecture dates from the Mayan Early Classic era (250-550 CE). It doesn't have the intricate details and grandeur of Uxmal, but it's beautiful and interesting in its own right! Maybe because it isn't as much of an attraction and you might be able to explore the site entirely privately, it's special and unique. You can climb up on the pyramid to get a great view of the overall site! Just next to the entrance, there's a factory making natural twine (from henequen), and they will give you a tour for a small fee if you want to learn about henequen textile production! Overall, it's a site well worth visiting if you're interested in Mayan culture and history - although best with a guide who can explain the site (since it's not as developed as an archeological site as Uxmal, for example)!

If you can understand basic Spanish, then this tour might be for you…read more Needless to say, it wasn't great for me who can only understand very minimal Spanish. Hubbers and I deliberately made time to experience this tour just so I can learn more about his family's hometown. And because I couldn't understand most of what was being said, didn't really learn much. Party of three, we met up with the host and was told the next bus run wasn't going to be for another half hour, so the three of us killed time by cooling off with sorbets at the dulceria nearby. We came back and we ended up waiting another 20 minutes. I'm guessing they were hoping for more passengers. Hubbers and his cousin decided to take the tour upstairs - under the sun. That was a no-no for me since it was way too hot for me to hangout there for an hour, so I stayed put downstairs. I searched for headphones to plug in their translation outlets: nothing. Them outlets didn't even look like they were working. But just for curiosity, I asked the driver if there were headphones. He told me, "NO." So, I had to put a quick thought in this: should I join Hubbers and cuzzo upstairs and maybe he can translate for me but suffer the blistering sun, or just stay downstairs and be more comfy? I went for the latter. So, yes, disappointing. I also need to mention the windows were open, so this is not an AC'd one-and-a-half-hour ride. I did enjoy seeing some structures, I understood a bit of description of some of them (but not enough to learn about them). We made one stop - just to pick up more passengers, and we were back in front of the cathedral in no time. Not recommending for non-Spanish speakers. I can't remember how much it was but wasn't worth it for me. One-and-done.

Unless you speak Spanish, do not take this tour unless you just want to drive around the city for an hour and a quarter (which was also shorter than the website claimed). I am giving it to stars because it was nice to see the city and one of us spoke Spanish and they understood the history. We took the barrios tour.
