If you have a more far eastern taste for food, Chung Wah Chinese supermarket (located next to…read moreChinatown) is a decent store to browse. They are always well stocked and sell a wide variety of ingredients and food (in bulks if you wish). The store is colourful in decoration, glowing red with warmth. It has a fairly welcoming appearance. As well as just dried and frozen food, they offer a range of Oriental cooking equipment that you won't find at your local Tesco's! If you're looking for something different to cook, this is an ideal place to shop with friendly staff to help you and point out some suggestions. Another good thing to mention is that they have a car park on-site which is well laid out and spacious.

Well what can you say, it's a supermarket and it's well stocked so I think it deserves four stars -…read morebut I need to draw the line somewhere, it's still a supermarket. Liverpool is home to the oldest Chinese community in Europe and therefore has a large population and strong tradition of providing goods from the far east. Situated on the outskirts of town on the doorstep of Chinatown, the Chung Wah has been providing exotic staples to Chinese restaurants throughout Liverpool and further afiedl as well as the local community. To walk in here is like those rare shopping experiences that you have on holiday. I found myself wandering round aimlessly expecting to find cereal or bleach but coming across dried squid and brightly coloured Chinese sweets. If you enjoy cooking and experimenting with food, there are plenty of weird and wonderful here to give you something to think about in the kitchen.

I also used to invite friends for some quick food. However my last experience completely changed my opinion about the store. I went with friends and I ordered lamb donor. As soon as it was placed on the table. The smell of off meat was horrendous. I asked the customer service provider who was wearing big thick glasses to replace with something else, he served me with lamb donor again saying that this is different donor. I asked him to give different food such as chicken, veg or salad except lamb donor. However not only he did not serve different food, did not refund me. I raised the issue with management and management and he could refund me and said, don't worry when I come next time, he would sort me out. What a service!!! I have informed many of my friends about this disgraceful service and will continue to do so. Only to make sure that they don't get treated this way. I have always been in support of local community and local shops although sometimes the prices are a bit expensive then chains, but definitely not support of Venus Turkish supermarket anymore.

There are more olives here than I have ever seen in my life - literally an entire aisle. There's not much fruit and veg here but there is a meat counter at the back and a myriad of lentils, beans, pickles and that kind of thing. It will definitely make your cupboard in the kitchen twice as interesting if you fill it with some of the goodies from Venus Supermarket.

In fact, all they need now is a candlestick maker! The best offers are always on display outside the shop and currently include melons, pineapples and assorted berries, all for at least half the price you would expect to pay in Tesco. If you're looking for a wide range of Indian or African veg then you'd probably be better off heading to Khawarja Brothers in Chorlton or Worldwide Foods in Longsight or Rusholme, but if you're after your two veg to go with your Sunday roast then this is a brilliant and inexpensive alternative to the chain stores. They also have a range of reasonably priced flowers, and although the simple cellophane wrapping may not be as aesthetically pleasing as the bouquets on offer in local florists, the flowers usually look lovely enough, and better than those at the Shell garage across the road!

I could go on and on about the fruit and veg here, but all you need to know is that it's good and it's cheap. As Kirsten says, it's pretty bog standard fare; onions, potatoes, peppers, greens and the like, but it's more than sufficient as a day-to-day grocery stop-off. The fruit is always tasty and usually ripe (I hate getting stuff home from Tesco to find it's still rock hard and will take a week to be edible!) As well as great fresh produce, you can pick up a pretty decent array of Indian curry pastes, chutneys and pickles, and some really fabulous poppadoms (I recommend the red pepper ones) The best curry I ever made was with Madras curry paste bought from here, with Freshsave tomatoes, and beef from Axon's. What with this and all the other great independent places in Didsbury, I have no idea how the Co-Operative stays open!
