I knew by Day 4 of our Mt. Dessert Island vacation, that I'd be lobstered-out and would need fruit…read moreand vegetables. That's why I bookmarked Beech Hill Farms ("BHF") in Yelp. I understood that BHF has a great Farm Market. BHF delivered on that and more. I arrived 10 minutes before BHF opened its gate at 9 am. By 9, five different cars had parked nearby so they could have pick of the Market. The customers mostly seemed like local Mainers, but there were some folks taking pics as well. After I parked, I scurried to the Market and didn't notice the surrounding area yet. The produce looked beautiful with its purples, greens, oranges, reds, yellows and dark blues. I bought fresh wild Maine blueberries, cucumbers, carrots, a multi-colored bell pepper, yellow-orange heirloom tomatoes, an eggplant and mixed salad greens. The blueberries were delicious. I made a great dinner salad with the non-eggplant veggies. I'll grill the eggplant tomorrow. I bought a few other local products. A baguette that was terrific with a local blue cheese I also bought from BHF. Granola I haven't tried yet. And a blueberry pie made by "Gayle Arnold Tucker". I don't know who that is, but in my mind she's a 5th Generation local pie legend. The crust was to-die-for and the blueberry filling had great flavor and consistency. BHF also sold things such as milk, eggs, honey, kimchi, jarred products and beverages. It was a terrific-looking farm Market with great stuff. After my purchases, I explored the grounds. There was a green house with row after row of farm fresh and fragrant garlic and things like starter vegetables. Picnic tables. Fruit trees. And my favorite thing of all - rows of gorgeous wild flowers that were a big draw for bees and . . . the most monarch butterflies I've ever seen in one naturally occurring place. I don't even know how many there were. I saw five at a time when I was looking up. I spent about 15 minutes taking butterfly photos and got some awesome pics. I limited myself to one in the Yelp photos I posted. The flower photo opportunities are also outstanding. I'll put my BHF pics up against my Acadia pics any day. If you like exploring Farmers Markets and/or great photo opps, I guarantee you'll enjoy Beech Hill Farms, at least in August. Five Stars

Bring the kids to meet and feed Sweetness, the Bunny and peak over the fence into the pig pen. If you're lucky, you'll see Menjula, the cat who hangs around or Hurricane the dog, who has a lazy energy that is anything but a hurricane.

Organic markets are not typical but this place is as atypical as it gets. You will see the sign…read moreoff of Route 1 and you will start to second guess yourself as you drive a few miles down the road only to see the sign falling down that reads the names of various vegetables. At this sign, your GPS will tell you to turn right down a gravel road, Cross Rd, and you will go another 1+ mile down a deserted road to the farm. The farm itself is run by Mr and Mrs Perlman who have worked this farm for more than four decades, raised 2 children to adulthood, without central heating, electric, or plumbing! Their story is truly amazing yet they have managed to build an organic farm that supplies individuals and local restaurants. They have a system here that they have developed and expect to conform if you wish to eat the fruits of their labors. Call on Monday. Mrs Perlman will tell you what they have for you to pick up at your appointed time on Thursday. This is not drive up when you feel like it. They are too busy working. The place is a bit rustic but don't let that scare you from the great bounty of their farm. Closed Saturday. On the particular Saturday, there were several cheese purveyors, an organic meat purveyor (bacon, pork, eggs, chicken), a bread stand and a flower stand. It's small but has some variety. It's only on Saturday mornings so it's very hard for travelers that are visiting for just one week because they are either leaving or too late arriving for the market. Great for those who want to buy local and live close by or who are staying more than a week.

I forgot to call the day before so when no one answered the phone in my way over I was chancing whether they would be around. What luck! They were home, working tirelessly on the conveyor belt that is in their old garage. When I parked my car I was greeted by an old black lab ( I have a huge soft spot for black labs). I greeted him with head pats and ear scratches. The wife approached me and I asked if I could rake some blueberries. She said I could and went to get her husband to have him bring me to a good spot. I was given an overview of how to rake since it had been a year since I last visited their farm. When left to my own devices, I took in the quiet surroundings, the smell of blueberries, and the soft breeze coming over the large field of berries. What tranquility! I began my raking with first novice representation and soon starting to feel like an old pro. It doesn't take a lot to get the hang of it. In about 40 minutes or less I had picked two flats worth. I pulled my wagon over to the garage where the fun part began. The husband lugged the flats to the top of the conveyor belt. My instructions were to stand at the lower part and pick out the stems and gross stuff closer to me. After one round we took the ones on the far end and did it again. I enjoyed being a big part of all the processes which also helped the price(big fan of that). I had brought my own containers, so I didn't have pint boxes or too many ziplock bags bumping around in my car, which was a huge help and I recommend. Everyone must go here! Such a wonderful experience that I have made into an annual event.

It's a cute spot that I am sure would make a killing if they stayed open for post-dinner desserts. We were staying down the road and never seemed to catch them as they close by 2 pm every day. Our family of 4 got coffee, London Fog tea, breakfast sandwiches with sausage on croissants, a strawberry banana smoothie, blueberry turnover, and Belgian chocolate croissant. My ten year old said his smoothie and blueberry turnover were "the bomb." My six year old inhaled her chocolate croissant and didnt really come up for air. Everything was so fresh. The breakfast sandwiches came with two eggs, a lean sausage patty, and all of it was not greasy. The croissant was sturdier so it could stand up to the sandwich. Like everywhere else in the area, cash only, but they all have an ATM on site where you can pay an ATM fee. This one was $2. There were some nice picnic tables outside too. An excellent breakfast overall, so good I forgot to take pictures.
