This place reminds me of some of the road side attractions along portions of Route 66 no one travels anymore. Clearly once pretty cool it is no pretty rundown and have signs of a once very cool stop is now someones afterthought. Theres an overgrown put put mini golf course and a small exhibit about wild blueberries. We picked up some frozen blueberries to make pancakes with tomorrow morning. Maybe I was more excited than I should have been--I mean I do love an old-school roadside tourist attraction, and I don't mind some kitsch and silliness--but I was hoping for a bit more. Wild Blueberry Land is just more old than anything else, and could use a little TLC. There's no missing the giant blueberry when you're driving along Route 1 on the way to Machias, that's for sure! That's the main building and store; next to it in the parking area is a repurposed mini-golf course with more blueberry decor--a pancake, a dilapidated blue ball, a lighthouse--and nice flowers. Boy would I have been thrilled if the mini-golf was actually active! Inside it's a gift shop and small exhibit about blueberries and their history as a crop in Maine. I kind of loved the dioramas showing the four seasons of blueberry crops (they look like they're made by grade-school students); otherwise, the shop itself sells things blueberry-themed: mugs, stuffed animals, jam, soap, books, chocolate, honey. Other than being all together in one shop, there's nothing here you can't find just about anywhere in Maine. The biggest disappointment is that there are no fresh blueberries! Say what?!! Nor was there pie (except frozen), and the bakery case held a few leftover-looking pastries when I was there, but that's about it. Sure, I bought some stuff (handy as gifts), and the lone clerk was very nice (seemed like a local teen with a summer job), but: it all seems like something time forgot and doesn't care much about anymore. If you're driving by anyway go ahead and pull over, but I wouldn't recommend making a trip out of your way. read more

You can't visit Wild Blueberry Land without realizing it's a tourist trap. Whether you drive by or seek it out, ya kinda know what you're getting into. The "no pictures" request on the door is--as one can see on social media--a polite, uninformed request. Inside you're forced through a tight maze of shelving as you get to the register. One will find a wide variety of expected offerings (playing cards, blueberry flavored tea, t-shirts, etc.), and some unexpected (hand painted soap dishes, seed packets, etc.). The owner was at the register with only one teenager helping her fill orders for baked goods. I grabbed a bar of blueberry soap, a small, ceramic dish, and asked for two slices of blueberry pie. When we finally made it to the rocky beach we sought, our family opened the boxes to discover a sloppy mess. Still tasted good, but I reflected on the directions the owner was giving and the haphazard nature of the teen, and figured this was the best they could do. The venue is suffering from lack of help (like many of the small Maine towns around the area). A once vibrant mini-golf course is overgrown with weeds and opportunities to visit the blueberry field is unavailable due to staffing shortages. I hope the smaller towns surrounding Bar Harbor do get back on their feet and employers find the help they need to revitalize the area. Until then, however, Wild Blueberry Land will be a quick visit, then on your way to your destination. read more

We went there on the recommendation from many travel sites and magazines What used to be the mini golf and pollinators little park is now abandoned overgrown with weeds sad looking place. The store uninspiring there were some slices of blueberry pies and blueberry muffins we asked if it is fresh the answer was "No it is not made here so I don't know when it was baked ". I've been coming to Wild Blueberry Land to buy blueberry pies for about 18 years. Up until this year, the pies were baked right there or you could purchase frozen unbaked ones to bring home and bake. They were fabulous. Well this year that all changed-and not for the better-I might add! The pies are now made & baked in Canada and are shipped frozen to Wild Blueberry Land and they are TERRIBLE!!! The crust is tasteless, thick, &dry. And to top it off-the sales person had the nerve to tell me the pies are baked right down the road at the blueberry farm, (as if I couldn't see the "made in Canada" in big letters right on the label?) Let me start with this: hands down, best blueberry pie I've ever had...any I've tried a lot of blueberry pie! Yes, it very touristy, but that's part of what makes it special. I LOVE a kitschy roadside attraction and this is a good one. Just out of Machias, you'll find Wild Blueberry Land in Columbia Falls. You have to stop there. The decorations, the fact that the building is a giant blueberry...totally awesome. Even better...they have delicious blueberry muffins, scones, coffee cake, smoothies, pie, ice cream and jams. Behold! A giant blueberry building on the side of the road! Talk about random. We were driving along our route up the east coast and noticed them from afar. Seriously. You can't miss this. It's a great stop for a treat or souvenir. Waking in you are immediately hit with the scent of blueberries. We finally made it back after two years. We called ahead and ordered two pies. They put them in the oven when we called and we picked up freshly baked blueberry pies. We had slices of pie for dessert tonight and they were fantastic. They do not over sugar the pies, so they are perfect for my taste. The crust is very flaky. This is a wonderfully kitschy little roadside attraction that is an homage to the wild blueberry that grows in abundance in the Downeast region of Maine. A repurposed geodesic dome, painted blue, is adorned with amusing blueberry-themed accoutrements, and inside is a bakery/gift shop dedicated to all things blueberry. Made fresh daily are blueberry scones, muffins and pies; one can also get blueberry tea, soda and juice, and if they are available, fresh blueberries, naturally. It's a fun little place and its owners are as dedicated to and as knowledgeable about the blueberry as it gets. After many years of driving by this place, I finally brought myself to the point where I would stop and go in only because someone I met who frequents WBL indicated that the pies were good and that I just had to order one in advance. I steeled myself to visit the giant blueberry, prepared to walk out ashamed of myself. As I got to the door I was enticed in by the smell of something baking. Yes, this is a tourist trap complete with all things touristy from the under maintained miniature golf course to the blueberry throne for kitschy picture taking. The theme here is blueberry, everything that has anything to do with blueberries. The smell however was of baked goods and in the dessert case were blueberry muffins, blueberry scones, annnnnnnd a blueberry pie! Is it for sale, I asked? Yes, she said! Well, I bought a scone, and the pie. I had a little sticker shock because the pie was $19 but it was full of those tiny wild Maine blueberries. The scone tasted more like a muffin, but the pie was the best, non-homemade blueberry pie from a bakery that I have eaten. We drove past this place on our way to the West Quoddy Lighthouse and it totally caught our eye. After all how could you miss the giant blueberry? After finishing at the lighthouse we made it a point of visiting Wild Blueberry Land. We were expecting a grubby tourist trap filled with junky merchandise. We actually found the complete opposite. The place was filled with real handmade blueberry foods. We asked for two slices of pie but they didn't have any slices available. They suggested we get a whole pie and eat part now and save the rest for later. My wife seemed ok with that but I was still skeptical. While talking with them we discovered that one of the ladies at the counter was the chef. She was rinsing a huge colander of blueberries. She explained how she cooks all her own recipes. Basically everything is made with tons of fresh blueberries from her own farm and very little or nothing of anything else like sugar. So we went for it. We bought a pie and immediately ate half of it. It was fabulous!! We liked it so much we bought three large jars of her various spreads. If you're anywhere near this place, stop in and treat yourself. You deserve it. read more

Very inhospitable owner/operator!! We entered the parking lot today at noon, and found it had the closed sign on the door, even though they're listed as being open from 10-5. There was a person in the bldg, so we called and asked if they'd be opening. The woman very matter of factory stated, no, they weren't ready yet.
