The bottom line: iPT is an outstanding, positive, and productive therapy group. In the course of being a competitive athlete for decades, I've broken things here and there and in recovering along the way, I developed a really low opinion of PT in New York City. Too often it seemed that the therapists were just ticking off boxes on an insurance checklist; and more disappointingly, they aimed really low, as if their goal was just to alleviate immediate symptoms and not to get to the root of the issue, enabling not just healing but progression past the problem in the first place. iPT is totally different. I watched their work for about a year at the gym where I train and was impressed by their attitude, engagement, and diversity of clients. Finally, increasing knee pain (after MRI and MDs and so forth) drove me to set up an appointment. What really got me was Steve's blunt optimism: you don't have to feel that! He made it feel so clear that a therapeutic program would be effective -- that attitude is so important and rare. They began with a thorough assessment. We followed with an extensive discussion of the deep anatomical issues that underlay my problem. The three therapists whom I know at the gym confer with each other and compare analyses and methods; they clearly work together to determine the best strategy. In my case the knee pain was the far-distant symptom of a learned hip misalignment going back to an injury from 15 years ago. As soon as I started working with them, I felt improvement. With each session I feel the realignment getting stronger and more habitual, and pain recedes more and more. iPT established a plan of 1x week therapy plus 3x daily exercises at home and some changes to my stretching/workout routine. It's been a great experience and now I feel completely supported in my desire to work on/work out all the accumulated damages from years of competition. Highly recommended! read more

If you think that physical therapy doesn't work, it's because you haven't been to see Steve Horney. I was suffering from some pretty nasty neck and nerve pain and for a period of a year had been to see neurologists, orthopedists, physical therapists, even an ENT specialist, and spent countless hours and many many dollars on doctor visits and pain meds. I had an appointment scheduled to get a cortisone shot when I was referred to Steve. After just a couple weeks of sessions and a customized home exercise program that he put into place the pain was substantially reduced and within about six weeks was entirely gone. Needless to say I cancelled the appointment for the cortisone shot and have been pain free ever since. Steve has a savant-like knowledge of human anatomy, which enables him to employ the perfect balance of technical therapy/strengthening exercises and some pretty amazing holistic techniques that were highly effective; he's like a mix between a classically trained surgeon and a witch doctor in the Amazon...with the bedside manner of your best friend. I would recommend (and have recommended) Steve without reservation. Not an exaggeration to say that he changed my life, and quite literally has saved me thousands of dollars in medical bills and many hours of wasted time. Unqualified endorsement. read more

For the past couple of years I have been struggling with chronic pain brought on by a complicated autoimmune disorder. When matters were made worse by a shoulder injury, my trainer recommended that I start seeing Steve for physical therapy. She praised him with a glowing recommendation and said that she had sent many clients to him and that he had even helped her with her own shoulder injury. Steve is amazing and I only wish I had started seeing him sooner. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the physical therapy field and has significantly helped improve my pain and the quality of my life. He was able to help me properly identify what was going on with my shoulder and make it feel better through a variety of massage techniques and session work as well as at home exercises and stretches. He has also been able to help me with my chronic pain issues because he is so knowledgeable about how the body works. Not only is he a great physical therapist, but he is an all around awesome guy. IPT is wonderful! I came for my chronic knee pain, which I've had for a couple of years now and have had physical therapy for in the past. I worked with Karl, and he took the time during my first appointment to make a thorough assessment and pinpoint the problem(s). He was able to explain why I was having pain in a way that a layman like me could understand, and tailored a treatment plan for me that was simple enough that I might actually do it, while also ensuring that it would be effective. Every time I left an appointment, I could feel the difference in my hips and legs from Karl stretching/kneading/slightly torturing my very tight muscles. But like someone else on here said, it hurt so good! The facility is clean (located inside a fairly new boxing gym), and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. Steve and the other therapists were friendly and outgoing, and always made me feel comfortable and welcome. 100% recommend anyone here, and will definitely be back when I inevitably hurt myself again. read more

This was my first experience attending a physical therapist and I was extremely impressed with ipT. I had a shooting pain, but didn't know the cause of the injury or the reason that pain persisted for so long. Through a highly scientific initial assessment, ipT was able to explain why I was feeling the way I did, the physiology behind the injury, and identified bad habits I have while my usual workouts that exacerbate the condition. I was given a daily exercise regimen that within one week eliminated nearly all of my symptoms. After several sessions, I have gained strength in muscle groups that I was not activating to take stress off the sensitive area. I came to iPT after my second meniscus surgery on my left knee (first surgery was repair in 2014, second was meniscectomy this January). Both surgeries were done at HSS. I did a lot of research online before deciding to go see Stephen and I'm thrilled with the experience. I've been seeing Stephen and Fernando (Nando) since mid-January and my recovery has been unbelievable. Stephen and Fernando are fantastic and really fun to be around. When I went back for my two week and five week check ups with my doctor, she was astounded with the progress. Steve has basically saved me. I have chronic back problems and after my 3rd surgery, I was physically and emotionally weak & basically hopeless. I've been to PT's before and nothing ever worked. The exercises never really helped and the sessions were somewhat cold, formulaic and unrealistic. From our first session, Steve gave me confidence that he could help and made me believe that I was going to feel better and get my life back. And that's what he's done. Through is expertise, sense of humor and caring personality he's literally gotten me on my feet and saved my ass. He has helped me tremendously with shoulder and back issues that had become chronic. These guys are dedicated professionals who really know their stuff! I came in for nagging lower back pain. Steve gave me a thorough examination and found sources of muscle tightness and weakness that could be causing the problem. He explained this all in great detail, and left me with a greater understanding of how the body works. Unlike other PTs I've seen in the past, Steve seems to really care about teaching patients to be as self-reliant as possible. I've had appointments with Steve and Fernando, who are both excellent. Fernando's skilled therapy always leaves me feeling in great shape. Steve is a great physical therapist because of how much he listens to his patients. He asks more questions than any medical professional I've ever been to. I've sought him out for two separate running injuries and both times he not only made me feel better after leaving every session, but gave me new exercises every week that I could do at home to continue to get stronger on my own. He understood how important it was to me that I be able to run and tried to get me back on my feet ASAP, rather than just telling me to pick a new workout. Love these guys! I had a bad knee and was really nervous about it. Within 10 mins of meeting Stephen, I immediately felt more comfortable and knew I was in good hands. Steve's knowledge of anatomy and kinesiology is second to none and this allows him to apply their application to your injury. Anyone can learn about the body and how it works, but being able to apply this knowledge is what truly separates a great therapist from a medicore therapist. Steve is extremely hands-on and is with you the entire time during your session fine tuning your movement as he constantly evaluates your range of motion. iPT has been integral in my most recent healing journey. I worked with Karl who was incredibly thorough and knowledgable. He made sure I understood each of my exercises and gave me pointers on form for when I was working out solo. The idea behind Physical Therapy is to release your tight muscles, stretch them, and then strengthen them to get them to function properly. I went from pain, weakness and poor range of motion to pain free, fluid motion. I can't recommend iPT enough. If you want to get your body moving optimally, then this is the place to go. I met Steve 2 years ago. I had shoulder surgery, did physical therapy while in college, but still had pain and weakness. Steve was very helpful in not only diagnosing my issue but explaining to me how certain exercises would help and why. Additionally, because he knew my body and the issues, he told me what exercises I should avoid. I find steve to be knowledgable and patient. To avoid future injuries, I now work out with steve as my personal trainer. I find it makes more sense to workout with steve and avoid injury rather than go to him after an injury. read more

I have been working with Fernando on my knees for several months and he is the best PT that I have ever seen. He was able to quickly identify my pain and establish a comprehensive therapy plan to guide my recovery. Since working with Fernando, my knee strength has improved dramatically and I've been able to start doing the things I love again (skiing, basketball, cycling, etc.). I went to iPT because I had pain and tightness in my right shoulder from doing my weekly activities such as swimming and muaythai. They were able to loosen the tight muscles and minimize the pain. They even made me do exercises to strengthen my rotator cuff muscles and they clearly explained how to perform the exercises at home as part of a home exercise program. By far some of the most knowledgeable guys I've met in the industry. A lot of physical therapists can help alleviate issues, but few give you the tools to help them stay away. Steve and Karl do an excellent job at teaching you methods for solving imbalances and weaknesses. I have been working with Fernando for the last month and a half I had a cervical fusion three months ago and have needed physical therapy for that. The gym is great and the physical therapy space is clean and conducive to therapy. Fernando has been absolutely wonderful. He is knowledgeable, patient and yet at the same time very motivating. I went to IPT with an unknown injury in my left arm. Karl was able to figure out what my problem was almost immediately and got me on a path to recovery.
