Steven Barteck has been a great PT to me! His bedside manor is A+. I recommend coming in the morning when it is slower; you'll get his full undivided attention. He is a smart, witty, and respectable guy who knows his stuff. I found this practice through the OSCAR Insurance app. I was looking for an office close to work (times square). I had a few small tares in my ankle that needed more than just a boot to heal. In particular, I liked that my PT sessions evolved as I continued to heal. In the first few visits, I learned new exercises (to do daily) and soaked my ankle in a whirlpool. Towards the last few visits, I spent much of my time being heated, massaged, and then iced. Basically a spa day that insurance covered. For those negative reviews that state they did not receive enough time with the PT, think about this: did the PT spend more time with you than the doctor who diagnosed you did? Thought so... Anyway, if you are concerned about having more PT time, come in the morning. My appointment was usually 9:20am-10:20am and it was just the 2 of us in the office. On my last visit, I got to see Steven Barteck do PT with a toddler. It was insanely adorable. He was so enthusiastic and showed a lot of patience! He event turned the exercises into games. I've been going to this place for a few months. Steven was pretty cool. He's friendly, a good PT, and helpful. I've appreciate all of our conversations, about the election, about the vaccine, about the music in his office...until I got my hair braided. I came in the day after, and he asked me problematic questions about its heaviness, people who wear braids who suffer from alopecia, all while looking my hair very intently and pressing pressure points in my shoulder. I saw him from the corner of my eye. I laughed it off, I explained things to him patiently, but deep down, I felt like an object rather than a person. That last visit wouldn't have been as bad if his assistant wasn't there. I feel like people who look like her get away with a lot. She rarely greeted me when I came in. That day, she saw me, we were both close to the front desk and without greeting me, told Steven I was there, and that I must be early or something. Terrible customer service. I think Steven might have noticed because after she said that, as he was working with a client, he greeted me from way across the room. I know she's young, but sweet Jesus, she is so rude. She's not a patient teacher, nor does she realize everyone's minds are different. Just because someone appears able-bodied cognitively, doesn't mean that they are. Everyone learns differently too. Not everyone is an audio learner, or listens well by sound. I've historically been terrible at it, I'm more of a visual/kinesthetic learner but she doesn't pick up on that. I've wanted to say something, but I've worried in my triggered state, I'll get snappy. Plus it makes me feel so defeated and depleted that I've tried to let it go mentally. She gets impatient really quick, and takes on a very condescending, rude tone with you. One day, I had to do an exercise with a pulley, I've never used it, she assumed I did (even though I told her I hadn't), and when I was doing it incorrectly, she rudely asked "what are you doing?" She also talks to you like you're a hard-of-hearing four-year old, which isn't my specific disability, but it's still very unsettling. I've also never seen her clean the equipment after each use, which is very important since we're still in the pandemic. I came in that day with a cleaning spray of isopropyl alcohol because I didn't want to dirty my braids, and she just stood there, watching like a revolted hawk, her gaze filled with malcontent. I don't see her interact like this with non-Black clients, especially the ones who speak Spanish and white men. Now, if I brought it up with them, I could already hear their defensiveness. But truth be told, this is literally how racism functions, in quotidian life, in words and deeds. I thought my insurance sent me there because there's few PTs who take mine, but a google search led me to at least 300 PTs in Brooklyn and Queens who take my insurance. I had a full meniscus and ACL tear back in September, but did not get PT until a month after (due to my stubbornness and other random reasons). My fiancé had shopped around for a PT a year before when he tore his MCL and he had a really positive experience at Oshman and Barteck. I decided to give it a try due to his recommendation and the fact that it is conveniently located. Steven is quite knowledgeable and knows exactly what he's doing. He was in charge of my pre-op PT, and I had regained near-full range of motion within a few weeks. I got surgery in mid-December, and stayed with my parents for a few weeks so that I could have someone look after me. As soon as I got back to the city, I reached out to Steven to continue my PT. At the time, I had just had a follow up with my ortho, and he was concerned about my range of motion. When I mentioned this to Steven, he was responsive and catered the exercises to this concern. After I had a 3month post-op follow up with my ortho and his reaction was markedly different-he was quite pleased with all the progress that I made. When deciding on your workout for the day, Steven takes into account the status of your injury and how you're feeling that day (there have been days when I've felt under the weather or my knee has felt really sore and he has adjusted accordingly) and will even modify in the middle of the workout, which shows how responsive he is to your needs. Make no mistake...he will push you and it's hard, but this is the only way you will get better! The aides are awesome and really helpful and supportive. This was wholly unsatisfying -- and beyond bizarre. Where to begin? I waited patiently while patients who arrived after me were seen before me. As I was waiting I listened to two employees discuss meetings with contractors for a home improvement project. Twenty minutes after my scheduled time, I realized that one of those employees was my physical therapist. This is where it gets even stranger -- and I'm not how to say this, but my therapist, Barteck, was, well....a douche. Perhaps my standard for bedside manner is high, as my previous physical therapists have been particularly wonderful. But then again, physical therapy can be vulnerable -- it involves being half naked while a stranger is manipulating your body -- there should be a minimum level of decorum. While being worked on, I was subject to strange and bizarre insults of my physique, my profession, my income, and my ethnicity. It was a series of surreal "Did he just say that?" moments. I should have just left, but was caught off guard completely. I didn't expect my physical therapist to be an asshole. Maybe the other therapists are less abrasive. I have known Steven Barteck for 8 years. I am an avid marathon runner and soccer player and I get injured a lot (several knee and shoulder surgeries, all soccer related). Steven is my go-to guy. He knows what he is doing, makes you do exercises that are fun and tailored to the activity you want to do, is friendly and always on time. I like in particular that he is hands on, does not let you slack unless you need it, and he tells you straight up what is the problem and how to fix it. Steven greatly helped me recover from a badly damaged medial collateral ligament. It has been seven weeks since my accident, and I am already running around with a knee that feels good. I will probably get injured again at some point, and it is great to know that Steven will be there to help me get going. read more

He gives great advice, including what to wear on my feet while they're healing, how to work out, how much to work out what to expect, what to do at home to help myself. Their entire staff is super friendly, very accommodating, and professional! They also have an icy cold therapeutic hot tub that I look forward to at the end of their sessions which always leaves me feeling like a new person. They are conveniently located in the theatre district, so I can go on my lunch hour! I will be returning and sending more of my friends and co-workers there. The orthopedist I saw diagnosed something torn in my shoulder - Steven Barteck said it was Frozen Shoulder and could be corrected in 12 sessions. I injured my shoulder and had surgery in March. My Orthopedic Surgeon told me I would not regain 100% range of motion. I started physical therapy in late March with Brandon. By the end of June I had full range of motion and I am pain free. Brandon, Steven, Maureena and Colleen were fantastic. They worked with me during each step and genuinely cared about me and my recovery. When my insurance ran out they worked with the Insurance Company to get extra visits approved. I went to see Steven Barteck because of pain in my left hip during training for a half marathon. Running had become very painful in my hip area (persistent dull aching in the front of the thigh). After performing several strength and flexibility tests, Steven diagnosed a hip flexor tendinitis. He collected all relevant information about my running schedule and looked at my running form on a tread mill. He showed me how to use a foam roller and gave me a series of stretching and strength exercises to do. He did very good sports massage on the hip and surrounding muscles and electric stimulation during the sessions. I held back from running only for a short period of time and resumed gradually by slowly increasing mileage and times of run each week. I recovered in about two months and am now training for the NYTC marathon and my hip feels good and healed. I was very happy with Steven because he turned out to be an excellent physical therapist with knowledge of running techniques and ways to improve running form to run pain-free and faster. And his British sense of humor will make the therapy session more enjoyable. RECOMMENDED FOR RUNNERS AND ATHLETES TOO. read more

I went there after IT band pain from training for a half marathon. You'll notice on their website they emphasize running form. Apparently, they think correct running form is the cure-all for every person's running injury. They told me fixing the form is a process that would take months or even years (and insisted that is the only fix for my problem). I tried to follow their running form regimen, but finally I dropped out of the half marathon and quit running. I still had periodic knee pain despite this (kind of suggests it's not all about my running form...). After going to a different PT, I found out that IT band problems are more directly caused by hip weakness, and they are working on my hip weakness, something not even suggested by the people at Oshman-Barteck. read more

After breaking my ankle in January by falling on the ice, I was finally ready to begin PT in April. Today was my last session. My experience with Steve Barteck and Brandon was excellent in every respect. (I broke the same ankle 25 years ago and my PT experience then was shorter and easier. Aging is a real kick in the pants.) In any case, Steve evaluated my status and let Brandon treat me thereafter -- he was great! He has infinite patience (I ask a ton of questions) and even made some of my exercises fun, or at least fun to watch. (I've been told I should not consider soccer as my next career move.) My primary concern was pain, of course, but also my gait was completely off as was my balance. Both of those things have improved dramatically: I no longer limp and the pain is almost completely gone. I have a number of exercises that I have been doing at home since therapy began and as it progressed, the difficulty of the exercises increased; I plan to continue with them in the hope of making even more progress with balance and strength. The office is pretty low-key and all the other staff members were always a pleasure to deal with. I was searching for a place close to my office and Oshman & Barteck was suggested to me by my health insurance company. My lucky day! read more

I've had chronic lower back pain for several years and have been to acupuncture, sports medicine, chiropractors, rolfing... you name it, I've probably tried it. The last chiropractor I went to actually made the pain MUCH worse. After seeing Steven Barteck for just a few months, the lower back pain is gone. Really gone. Not just for an hour after the session, not just for a few days. I've been pain free for several weeks now. He has a holistic approach that takes into account everything from what I do all day to how I sat on my sofa at home. My son is an idiopathic toe walker and has been a patient of Steven's on and off since he was 5 years old (he is now 9). He was recommended by the pediatrician. Steven has been wonderful. He has a great way with kids and is very knowledgable. He explains why he does certain exercises and how doing them will help improve the toe walking. He has taught us exercises/stretches to do at home and made suggestions re: equipment he thinks would benefit my son outside of the PT sessions. We recently got a rocker board which has helped tremendously! My son has always enjoyed going to Steven's. Oshman & Barteck is my go-to physical therapist in New York City. I initially came in for a fractured foot injury that I sustained playing basketball. Later I had some knee and elbow ailments that required me to seek physical therapy. I received massage therapy, ice and heat treatments, was taught exercises and stretches, ultrasound and electrolysis, and given whirlpool baths. Each time the physical therapist was able to get rid of my pain! Let me say that my renowned orthopedic surgeon (during a rushed appointment) did not spend the necessary time to figure out the cause of an elbow issue I had. However, at Oshman & Barteck they conducted multiple different tests and actually spent time asking me questions. Eventually they figured out what the underlying issue was! This saved me from unnecessary cortisone shots and perhaps even surgery. I was able to get relief from my pain through physical therapy - which is what physical therapy is supposed to be about! I have always found the staff to be helpful and efficient. I've never really had to wait more than 1-2 minutes for my appointment. Walk in and be seen right away. Other medical offices should take cues from Oshman & Barteck. They accepted my insurance and handled all the necessary paperwork on my behalf which was nice. I would not hesitate to recommend Oshman & Barteck to my friends or family. I hope I won't need physical therapy in the future, but if I do, I'm glad to have a trusted physical therapist I can depend on. read more

But one session with him and half of the pain went away and by the second visit, it could already walk naturally and sneezing wasn't so painful and by the fourth session i was finally good as new. I totally agree with the two reviewers who truthfully pointed out that Steven Barteck is an idiot. He's a terrible PT and and obnoxious rude creep. I went to him for a shoulder injury and he seriously HURT me during treatment. So I asked him to ease up and he said, "No pain, no gain...I DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR PAIN, I'm concerned about your mobility." Yes..he actually said "I don't care about your pain." I said "I DO care about my pain AND my mobility." He replied, "You'll get over it - AND HE CONTINUED TO HURT ME!!! So I stopped the session at that moment and left. I found another PT who was wonderful and fixed my shoulder. Barteck actually had the nerve to call me the following week and say, "If you don't come back to me, you will never get better." ...to which I replied, "Did you think you were the only PT in a city with thousands of PT's?? I've already found someone MUCH better and she's already helped me." Then he made some obnoxious comment and I hung up on him. What a horrible person. I am guessing that most of the "positive" reviews on here are fake. If three of us on here had the same terrible experience, then you can be sure that's how he always is. STAY AWAY. read more

Steve Barteck is a great Physical Therapist. I suffer from neck, back, shoulder, & arm pain. I work as an executive assistant and am sitting all day. He suggest I get a stand up table to relieve the compression on my neck causing the pain. I had an ergonomics evaluation and am now using a stand up desk at work. I no longer have chronic pain. I cannot thank Steve enough for his service and the advice on the stand up table. It has changed my life. read more

This was entirely abysmal, from day 1 to the end. I must agree with Rajesh B who called Barteck a name that seemingly was "created" for him. Bartek from the first moment on the telephone was unfriendly, arrogant, rude and condescending. I needed a new PT though and came in anyway. My prior PT place was excellent, but needed a place closer to home. This was a bad choice. From the first visit, my therapist seemed fine, but I received a prolonged shock from the electrode therapy I received for muscle stimulation, because the girl who did this to me after the PT session, was NOT the therapist, but rather a "helper". There was a point when the adhesive discs came into contact with the hot, watery towel that I was resting on, and it shocked me. It was horrible, but no one apologized. It was as though this happened all the time. I received electrode therapy maybe a hundred times with my other PT -- all perfect. They were above reproach with everything they did for me. The towels and other elements used by my previous PT place were modern and their facilities clean. They also had proper electrode therapy units and knew how to use them. The heating elements had velcro enclosures so that the heat could get into the precise area you needed it in. Bartek uses "hand towels" that get wet. They smell bad, are worn and just look tattered & disgusting. The heating elements either burned the hell out of you or weren't warm enough. They also did not conform to your neck, or other body parts. It was just a complete mess. The staff could not get it remotely right. I prayed it would not happen again after I told my PT what happened to me. On my last visit, (went for a few visits only), we were once again going to end with electrode therapy, after my so called "session" ended, which consisted of me doing exercises that I do at home on my own, while my therapist went out to get coffee. (I asked where she went and was told this). She seemed competent up until that point, but my other PT place had their processes far more together. My therapist was nice, but was a neophyte compared to the others I'd seen. I wasn't thrilled that I was doing things I do at home alone, without guidance for a prolonged period while she got coffee. The same girl who shocked me the first time, although a nice person, arranged for the electrode therapy once again. She said, "See you in 10 minutes", [the usual duration for the therapy]. This was my time to relax, breathe deeply and get into a meditative state to help the healing process. Two minutes into it, she whipped the curtain around and appeared. She disturbed me and surprised me, as the prior times I had this time to myself. Before she entered, I heard Bartek say "Get her out of Room #2. I need it for my client", but didn't think it was ME as I had 10 minutes of electrode therapy to do. I was irked that I'd been caught off guard when I was trying to meditate and relax. I then told her "I want to receive what I usually get, which is 10 minutes". She went out to talk to Bartek. I was perturbed at this point from all the craziness, but thought I would now get my uninterrupted 10 minutes of muscle therapy & relax, when she appeared yet again 2 minutes later! So this was now the SECOND TIME they annoyed me and threw a wrench in this process! This time the girl was clearly made anxious by Bartek. She began ripping off the electrodes on my neck! In her haste, the discs came in contact with the wet towel that was beneath it and it shocked me once again in my recovering neck! I was so angry that Bartek created this additional stress and pain for me. I left and told my therapist that I would not be back. She tried to be kind to me, but I really hated the place a lot, except for her. A short while later, Bartek strangely phoned me at home and said "I don't know what happened, but I canceled your other appt as you asked." (I know. I told my PT to do this. Why would he need to call me and further annoy me?) When I tried to tell him what transpired from my perspective, he rudely interrupted. I said, "You are not listening", when he yelled into the phone "You are right!! I am NOT LISTENING and NOR DO I WANT TO!!!!" and slammed the phone down in my ear. (I have ear damage as well which I am trying to recover from. How awful of him to do that to me). Horrific. Just a note: I had a serious accident which left me with broken bones and horrendous pain. If Bartek could talk to a person who was in serious need of care, consideration and professional physical therapy, in this way, and treat them like "absolute garbage", totally devoid of a modicum of respect or decency, that makes him an incredibly troubled individual. His true colors are "frightening". Steer clear of this place. The negative energy coming from the Owner is very strange indeed. He made me feel extremely uncomfortable from the beginning to the last visit, if you could call it a "visit". I've never been treated so badly in my entire life. read more
