It reads, "The Green Mountain Club was born at a meeting of Vermont hiking enthusiasts in the Van Ness House hotel, which stood on this site from 1870 until it burned in 1951. The club's mission is to "make the Vermont mountains play a larger part in the life of the people." This resulted in the Long Trail, the first long-distance hiking trail in the nation. Vermont's "footpath in the wilderness, the Long Trail traces a roughly 272-mile path along the high ridges of the Green Mountains from Massachusetts to Canada, crossing Vermont's highest peaks. The trail, completed in 1930, continues to be maintained by the club. The Green Mountain Club's founder, James P. Taylor, lived in the Van Ness House much of his adult life." Step back a hundred years and imagine life in Burlington in the late 19th century. What was shopping like? What sort of vehicles traveled here? What were people wearing? Where were they heading? The marker reads, "This impressive Italianate-style commercial building with a massive five-foot tall cast iron cornice was historically known as the Exchange Block. Designed by local builder William Townsend, the building was intended to stylistically complement the former Vermont Life Insurance Company building adjacent to the east on Main Street, which was completed in 1877 and also constructed by Townsend. The first occupant of the Exchange Block was E.P. Shaw, who owned a fashionable men's clothing store in the corner storefront. The marker reads, "On Sept. 6, 1814 the left wing of the British Army, on its invasion route to Plattsburgh, passed here. It fired upon this house, according to tradition, thinking it to be a fort." Plattsburgh is the county seat of Clinton County. It is on the northwest shore of Lake Champlain…read moreopposite Burlington Vermont. Plattsburgh was the site of Battle of Valcour Island in 1776, one of the first naval battles of the Revolutionary War. It was also the site of the Battle of Plattsburgh which took place in September 1814 where the United States victory ended the final British invasion of the northern states. Plattsburgh was founded by Zephaniah Platt in 1785 and incorporated in 1815. City Hall was designed by architect John Russell Pope, who was also responsible for the the National Archives and Records Administration building (completed in 1935), the Jefferson Memorial (completed in 1943) and the West Building of the National Gallery of Art (completed in 1941). This was one of his earlier works, constructed in 1917. The Classical Revival style features a projecting entrance portico with six Doric columns. I spent a couple of days here, exploring and enjoying the hospitality of the town. There are some excellent beer breweries, some great coffee and of course, the New York harbor for the Lake Champlain ferry to Vermont. In July, the temperatures are fabulous. I have attended quite a few churches over the years and I've always found this one to be "home"…read more Pastor Michael San Soucie, or "Pastor Mike" has been here since the beginning. He built this church with his wife Elizabeth, and has shepherded the congregation since it's inception many years ago. He's a true MAN of God who has done so much for the Plattsburgh community (no, not just his parishioners). I can personally attest to this! If you are looking for a place to worship if you're new in the area, or just passing through our community, I would highly recommend coming over! You will find that the Word of God is preached right from the Bible, no "watered down to tickle your ears" sermons here. Pray, participate, or heckle (he's used to it from having yours truly in his congregation) you will find yourself filled, replenished and ready for the world outside. (He can get me motivated to where I want to take on the gates of hell with a squirt gun!) The building is very nice, always clean, several bathrooms and a downstairs nursery with CCTV. The church also has an adjoining "bookstore" with a variety of items and very reasonable prices. With all the variety I honestly don't know why it's called a "bookstore"... Oh yeah, they're also an equal opportunity employer which brings me to Pastor Jimmy (lol, just kidding you Jimmy)... Come on in, we're all family.
