With the sun out and the sky blue, it was a sight to behold. And it was the first proper summers day in about two months! There is a handy purpose made carpark on the side of the road and there is a proper path to lead you to the Dolmen. If you do happen to be in Carlow, take a look. this dolmen is about 4000 years old and is holding up well. to get to it you walk up a little…read morefenced path and then you will find the dolmen in a clearing in the middle of a field. surrounded by fields its really peaceful and a bit of history on your doorstep. they have a big sign full of information for the tourist or for the interested. beneath the dolmen apparently has never been excavated so it may be interesting to wonder what is down there among the rocks and soil. the dolmen is made up of two stones which are the entrance to a tomb, possibly the buriel place of many people. its amazing to wonder how they managed to get such large stones in place and to remain that way for so long.

So I did upgrade it to a 3 simply because it was a nice day and well, it is beautiful. The only thing I'd say is you're done looking at everything in 30 mins, the art is particularly underwhelming but nature shines through and the woodland and natural beauty of the place is obvious. However, you don't need to do too much shopping around to find a completely adequate, free alternative not too far away. Mount Leinster and stradbally forest spring to mind and if you're not going with a picnic both alternatives have services.

I'm not one for Italian food in Ireland as I find it pretty boring and often caters to the carbonara/lasagna eaters and not like the food you get in Florence or the like. That was not he case here. Firstly, the starters. There were three of us. Two of us had soup, each one was different and both was lovely. The other person had a wonderful Sicilian chowder. This was a new one for me. Chowder is just creamy fish soup in Ireland but this was a tomato based soup with large chunks of fish along with whole shellfish and a massive langoustine (Dublin bay prawn). That person had been to Sicily and had this dish and she said it was 100% authentic. Two of us had a Monkfish special and it was cooked to perfection. There was a tagliatelle pasta dish also with Italian sausage. It was very tasty. It appeared to be good value with main courses from €17 to €25. We shared a bottle of the house wine which was surprisingly good. I didn't notice until too late that they had a few Italian craft beers that I had never seen before. They were from Birrificio Montegioco and one was called Draco, an 11% barleywine and the other was Rurale, a 5% pale ale. The waitress brought them over for me to inspect when paying the bill so I would be prepared for the next time I was in. I can easy say that this was the best and most authentic Italian food I have had in Ireland and I will be back the next time I'm in Enniscorthy.

It was billed as a Seaside attraction to teach both tourists and natives alike what it was like to be a Celt in early Ireland. Our tour started out well, as we were led into a room where a video presentation ensued that told of old Irish folklore and customs. As a descendant of Ireland myself, I've never heard a lot of what we were being taught and so, I found it most interesting. After this portion of our tour was over, we were led to another area which was decorated to give the feeling you were actually in an old Celt village. Let's just say they meant well. I think we must have been there at the end of the day because the staff seemed a little "punchy". For instance, there was a fake decapitated head hung from a tree who's mouth moved when someone spoke from behind the curtain. It would "speak" to people below it as they'd pass by. "Hey, would you scratch my nose?"...or, "Today is my Birthday!" were some of the sillier rants. I'm sure it was intended for more serious instruction. I'm embarrassed to admit that this was the highlight of our visit to Celtworld and we still talk about that head to this day. Well, what can I say? It was FUNNY! (maybe you had to be there.)

Opportunities to shelter inside are a bit limited as there's an admission fee into the Visitor's center and the nearby hotel (and snack concession) requires a bit of a walk. Besides the natural beauty of this place (and peaceful walking opportunities), the main reason we were here was to visit the monastic settlement founded by St. Kevin in the earth 7th Century. Key runs include the "Monastic City" from the 10th-12th Century (including St. Kevin's Monastery), the iconic round tower and the last surviving ecclesiastical gateway in Ireland (offering sanctuary to those who passed through it). The settlement was attacked by Vikings and Irish kingdoms over the years but continued to be a place of pilgrimage, until at least the 13th Century. Our guide also shared part of the legend of the fair maiden Kathleen who desired Kevin. The stories were fascinating, including a possible tragic end, and St. Kevin's unwavering commitment to his vows, despite temptation.

We did not quite have the time to walk to the upper lake (well, we probably could have but it would have been a rush) but the lower lake was lovely and peaceful. The monastic ruins were so interesting as well. I would love to come back and spend an entire day wandering. I could have just strolled along or sat for hours taking it all in and contemplating life.
