Saltimbocca
Ash V.

Excellent service, very polite workers/staff. The food was lovely. While it may not have been the most traditional, it was super tasty! We had the saltimbocca and cannelloni. The interior was a little chilly, but one of the workers was kind enough to point the air conditioner away. :). It can be a great place for a romantic dinner. It's a little on the upper-mid range, but great for a night out! We would definitely recommend it, and would visit again.

We smelled something amazing being cooked after we left the Kilkenny Castle and our noses led us to this obscure restaurant. We had the most amazing fried calamari for an appetizer and I decided upon the stuffed rolled pork belly. I still can't stop talking about it! The waiter was wonderful and made our visit very memorable.

What a beautiful meal in a lovely place. If you're in Kilkenny you'll have to make a reservation here and enjoy the fare with a nice glass of Borolo! Fresh made pasta and vegan options super fresh and delish!

I have to say this place was absolutely fantastic!!!!! Best food eveeeerrrr!!!! OMG!!! I chose the Mussels as starter, superb! the sauce was so delicious. My impression was when i got Cunard Fish with pizzaiola sauce, it's from another world!! and finally Pannacotta for desert. uuufff!!! The waiter from "Montenegro" was more than helpful and friendly and added to an enjoyment! I'm definitely coming back and back and back again for more! There's one bad thing about this place, there is no other like it in Dublin. well I will have to come to Kilkenny for dinner... :D

Garlic chilli prawn spaghettini - quite good but not sure it's worth €17 though...

Famished after a big walk in Kilkenny Castle and its grounds, out came my Yelp app which led me to this place. Prices are a little steep - even for lunch, I paid close to €17 for a chilli garlic prawn spaghettini. It was lovely but for that price, I'd expected it to be gorgeous and the prawns to be just a little bit fresher. Service was good but also just that little poncy (does this word get used in Ireland? See: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=poncy) It's probably a place more suited for dinner perhaps?

Looks good taste better

Yum! I went in here…read morethis evening for dinner with my Mum & Dad. It was quite busy when we went inside as there were some first communions today, alot of people were out so the place was buzzing. We said to the lady that greeted us that we didn't have a reservation but she said that was ok and showed us to our table. The layout is very nice, lovely funky bar as you walk in the door, then long dining area, and at the end there is an open kitchen so you can see the food being prepared which is always nice. Dim lighting with little blue fairly lights on the trees give nice vibe to the place. On the menu there is a selection of starters, salads, all about 5 euro, then you can get pizza or pasta, these are all in 10 euro bracket, steak and fish dishes are around 20 euro, chicken dishes around 15 euro. There is a wide variety of food to choose from. I opted for the penne con pollo, which was a lovely pasta strips dish served in a creamy sauce with mushrooms and diced chicken through the dish. Please see attached photo. We were given bread and water while we were waiting, we didn't have to wait that long, maybe 10-15 minutes, then the meal arrived, the waitier apologised for the delay, which I didn't even notice, just seemed right about of time to wait for a meal! I was given a good portion of pasta and the waitress asked did I want any parmesan, and sprinkled a delicious helping over the pasta. I was full from the dish, didn't have a desert afterwards. I had a cappuccino which was delicious and plentiful size! Very friendly staff, very efficient, great service, delicious food! Highly Recommended!

The restaurant itself has a fancy feel right what you walk in, but the menu doesn't feel too fancy in terms of options, and I don't mean that a bad way! Dim lighting, and an elegant feel to the place. They have a bar, but it's quite small. They did ask us if we had a reservation when we walked in, so maybe plan to make one if you intend on going! We got two salads and a pizza. The pizza reminded us of Punch Pizza, a restaurant back in the states. They were great, and honestly like a sense of comfort food. It all came out so fast, I want to say 10 minutes or less. After dinner, we got the Apple Tart and Tiramisu. I'd order the Tiramisu in a heartbeat! So summer and delicious - definitely get that if you have room! Service was great too. When you're done, you stand up and pay by the bar. That's something we've had to adjust to while over here - to not wait for the bill at the table. Overall, 4 out of 5 stars!

When we walked in around 5pm it wasn't too busy and we were seated right away. My partner and I decided to order some focaccia bread as an appetizer along with a pepperoni pizza to share. The basket of focaccia we received was filled to the brim, a very generous serving, and it was so fresh, soft, and warm. I can easily say it was the very best focaccia I've ever tasted! The pizza was equally as good, it was on the thinner side but with a thicker crust, the sauce was not too sweet, and the pepperonis had a tiny bit of spice to them. It was truly up there with one of the best pizzas I've tasted and if I didn't live thousands of miles away then I would make La Trattoria a regular staple in my diet. Very bummed to see so many negative reviews because my experience here was nothing short of amazing!

But what caused me to write a review was that we asked for marinara to dip our garlic bread in. She said they don't have marinara. We restated and said red sauce, like on spaghetti or pizza. She said they don't have that. My husband and I both ordered pasta and it came with marinara. I don't know what they call that sauce in Ireland but she needs to expand her vocabulary if she's working in an Italian restaurant!

We should have got an inkling that we weren't in for the most awe-inspiring of dining experiences when we observed a number of tiny flies sealed under the menus that had been stuck to the inside of the windows (way to advertise, by the way). Undeterred, my dining companion and I decided to plough on and eat there anyway. I have to say that my meal was perfectly alright: penne pasta with bacon and in a tomato sauce, or something along those lines. It would be absolutely fair to say that the pasta was overcooked, but I, like a lot of Irish people, am more familiar with "the living shite boiled out of it" pasta of my childhood, rather than the "al dente" pasta of proper Italian cuisine, so that didn't bother me. The meal was quite tasty. The person I was eating with, however, was thoroughly unimpressed with her salad; apparently, it was made with canned olives rather than fresh ones (the way to tell this, according to her, is to check the holes that the pit came out of. If the holes on all of the olives is too regular, they have come from a can). I don't actually like olives, canned or otherwise, so this piece of information is unlikely to affect me, but then again, it's good to know. And whatever about the joys of overcooked pasta versus the more conventional al dente option, I most definitely am not fond of overcooked vegtables. And the order of mixed vegtables (actually just carrots and broccoli) that both of us ordered was woefully overcooked. In other news, the service was quite good and the prices were reasonable. But the food was pretty shit.

I don't remember the exact price but it was a good deal. We made the mistake of ordering two sparkling water's which cost almost as much as a dinner. It didn't help that all the businesses around here close after lunch hours and then reopen for dinner! So, we saw the words pizza and decided to give this place a go. Atmosphere: Typical pizza joint. Ordering counter with tables to sit at. Good amount of windows with natural light. Fairly clean for a pizza place. Service: We were greeted very pleasantly and our order taken quickly. We ordered from the counter and then were told we could sit to wait. While we were waiting, the gentleman who took our order came over with out drinks and a vase of bendy straws and napkins. I personally was delighted by this because who doesn't love a bendy straw? Our pizza came out in 10 minutes or less. Granted it wasn't incredibly busy, but we were very happy because we were so hungry. The pizza was even delivered to our table. Presentation wise the pizza looked great! When we left we were also thanked profusely. Not too often that that happens! Food: Both my boyfriend and I got 9" cheese pizzas (personal pan size or 6 small slices). They were pretty darn good. Much better than we were expecting. The crust was delicious - crispy but not over done and still doughy enough to have that Italian bread flavor. The sauce and cheese were good as well. I also appreciated that the pizza wasn't greasy. If anything I would say there could've been more sauce, but that's because I like more sauce then most people. It came out nice and hot too which was great because it was freezing outside! I can only speak for the pizza but I feel I should mention that interestingly, this place also offers American fair such as burgers, wraps, fried chicken, fish, etc. and kebabs of all sorts. Different combination of food offerings than we are used to, but all the more power to ya! Cost: Totally reasonable. Our pizzas were 6 euros each and we had sodas too which were 1.5 euros each. Everything else on the menu is pretty cheap as well. We both ate for under 20 euros which is a bonus in my book! I would say give this place a try, absolutely. Well worth it.
